CU vs BSU closed scrimmage (BSN)

Disappointing that Talton outplayed Dom for sure. Also, very curious as to how Fortune looked. The best news that could have come out of that scrimmage is the defense though, it was awful last year and was more than likely the cause of the downfall along with Scott being hurt.

Its only disappointing if you assume Talton hasn't improved. Agree on D though. Tad's first two seasons were so much fun to watch, partly because of the high level of defense we played.

Compared to last year's scrimmage, it's great to hear this positive sentiment.

Not too surprised about XT's outperformance. I hate how negative this sounds, but he's a great practice player, and a scrimmage is much easier to play loose in than under the lights and in front of a crowd.

my concern with Talton is he's a limited athlete - he can do everything right (which would be awesome) and still has a certain ceiling. In theory Dom's is higher.

credit to @RK for pulling that much info -- those closed scrimmages are damn hard to get reports out.

are you just being positive or did you really hear that he is a great practice player? That is something that I never heard before

And the whole Talton over Dom stuff has got to stop. This was one source's opinion. Could have been the ball boy who Talton joked around with before the scrimmage. Let's not get carried away here. Every year this forum hype's Talton in preseason and then flips on him during the year. He'll give us solid minutes here and there. He'll hit some threes. The more he's allowed to be a secondary player while on the court, without any pressure, the better he'll be.

Dom's our point. And he's better than Talton. No offense, but true words.

Two things on the XT note:

1.) This could be a way of someone on the team to motivate Dom. Whomever runs the point for us is going to have to be strong mentally to keep the team going. Time to start challenging him and see if he can handle it.

2.) This doesn't necessarily mean that Dom sucked. XT, when he plays within himself, is a good player for us. The problem is that sometimes he tends to try to play above and beyond his limits. If XT is playing smart ball, this is great news for the team.

And yeah, like Birch said, it's one source from one scrimmage. Not going to hit any panic buttons and/or start launching celebratory balloons.

Tad was sort of calling out Dom in the press conference yesterday about his leadership and being the QB on the court so that would make a lot of sense.

Where is this hyping of Talton you speak of?

Pinpointing something like that is absurd. And obviously "hyping" is a rather interesting word choice. But two small examples would be rereading the last two years of scrimmages to get the idea.

"Scrimmage Notes 10/25" and "Public scrimmage Saturday 10-19".

From last year:
"I'd start a 3 guard, 1 combo, 1 center offense. When you have an all american like scott, you have to give him room to operate.
5. Scott
4. XJ
3. Fletcher
2. Booker
1. Talton"
"As has been said, Ski is still not a PG unfortunately. Talton however is and he looked really good to me today."
"I think our best lineup (without seeing Dom) will be XT Ski XJ Wes Jelly. I would rather if we didn't have two small guards starting together for defensive purposes, but our offense runs so much better with XT in there."
"Xavier Talton I thought really was kind of the glue guy that made the difference for the Black team," Boyle said. "(He) really got his team going and made simple plays. I like guys who just make the game simple."
"XT earned valuable minutes last season after SD went down. He looked very good yesterday, clearly under control and a floor leader as a true point should be."
"It's hard to see a situation where XT is not solidly in the top 5 for minutes per game this year."
However, from last year's thread there was this one single comment on XT that wasn't like the others. Goose: "I wasn't as sold on XT at the scrimmage as some of you guys. He looked ok, I guess, but he was just kind of there. He didn't do much of anything to stand out."

Take note how in the 2013 game he "Started at point for the black team and had a heck of a game as well. Little X really was impressive running the offense for the black team. He distributed well, got the bigs involved and made a few big time shots." While Dinwiddie "had a solid game. Did not stand out, but that was to be expected. He was clearly focused on working on distributing the ball and playing solid defense."

Same scrimmage thread from 2013:
"XT looks poised for big minutes."
"Josh Scott and Xavier Talton stood out the most to me. "
"Talton was stroking it from deep yesterday....if he can be a legitimate 3 point threat like that, I can see him getting more minutes than anyone would have previously anticipated."
And...cough...cough...ahem...from jgisland: "If Talton can do this consistently I'm all for seeing Spencer move to the 2 and let Talton play the point."

Okay. I agree. It was a poor choice to use "hype." Maybe "anticipates the best" would have been a bit more realistic?

And for the record. I think Talton is pretty swell. Hope he rocks it this year.
