this could have been a great season

Let's look at the facts:

1) loss to Hawaii...ok we weren't ready, but why not? this was a gimme
2) loss to oregon....should have won but we couldn't contain Royce Freeman. Led most of the game IIRC.
3) loss to AZ...leading by 7 in the fourth and couldn't contain a backup QB.

do the math...even with 2 of those as wins, we'd be 6-2 right now with a deserved loss at ASU and one let down.

Sad to think that 7-1 at this point is not that far out of the equation. Maybe CU really is getting better, they just need to learn how to step on the opponents throats. The loss at Hawaii was purely due to inadequate preparation. Oregon and AZ both were because CU couldn't add to their leads when it mattered most.

This season could have been MUCH different.

I predicted us to be 6-2 right now with wins over Hawaii and AZ that we didn't get, and I also thought we'd beat Washington State to get to 7 wins and bowl eligibility. In hindsight, it wasn't too far off what could have been, but then again, we could have beaten Cal, UCLA and Utah last year too.

While I felt we left a few points on the field in the first half v. Oregon, I didn't feel that game was as winnable as you do. As good as we looked in the first half, they looked a lot better in the second.

Granted.
I think the only part of the game they had us beat on was us being unable to stop Royce Freeman.
We've had issues with running QB's all season, but in hindsight, every game is winnable.

The Hawaii game has no excuse. The other two we were beat in the second half by better teams. Athletically and at times, coaching wise.

I know positivity is frowned upon in these parts, but on the plus side, we've doubled our win total from last season with 5 games left to play, we beat CSU (always a must), and we ended the conference road and overall losing streak. That's progress.

Winning one conference game is not progress. I'm not trying to be a dick, but cmon. We haven't progressed at all.

It is sad that we are not 6-2 right now...very possible. On the other hand, we COULD have easily lost to CSU and Oregon State, and be sitting at 2-6.

I think we've seen some progress with certain individuals, but as a team, not sure we've seen much progress. We've just had an easier schedule. Our front 7 on D and O line are still horrendous. In fact, I would say our front 7 on D is probably one of the worst in P5. We are still very young and lack major talent at certain positions. Our lack of depth has reared its ugly head due to this as well.

I think we've gone back to what Sefo does best and that has helped him as a QB. If we are going to stick with Sefo, then stick with what he does best. We need to find more ways of getting the ball to our play makers in space and doing it quick, as we don't have the Oline to give Sefo any consistent time to throw.

I'd like to start seeing more of Lee/Carr on swing routes and finding ways to getting them the ball in space. They have elite speed. We also need to start riding Lindsay more as our primary back. Gotta get Fields healthy as well. That's what I'd like to see on O from here on out.

On D, I'd like to see more of Falo and Watanabe at LB. Falo is your prototypical LB and I think right now is our all around best LB. He will make freshman mistakes, but will also make a play that no other LB can make. Watanabe hits like a mac truck, so he is good in run support, if you don't ask him to do much coverage. Our D lineman and outside LB's are what they are and don't expect much from them.

The Hawaii loss is the inexplicable one. I mean, yeah, weird **** happens in the first game, and it was at Hawaii, and it was at 11 pm our time, blah blah blah - it was ****ing Hawaii.

The rest of it is a little less believable. We lost to Oregon because we couldn't match up athletically with their run game. It was obvious in the first half, and Oregon exploited it in the second half. Yeah, we could have executed better on offense, but it would have taken some ****ty coaching by Helfrich for us to win that game. Sorry, jmo.

Arizona - kind of the same thing. I think we could have had a chance to win the game had we not ****ed around offensively in the third quarter, but at the same time, if we jump out to a bigger lead, who's to say Rich Rod doesn't go to the backup QB earlier? We had no answer for him because we don't have enough athletes - especially when you factor in injuries - to stop that kind of QB.

I know we want to believe that we have more control over our wins and losses than we do, but the truth is, if we want to have 'great' seasons, we have to add talent. Plain and simple.

One of my colleagues has a son who was involved in a motorcycle accident that resulted in some brain damage and partial paralysis.

Before the accident, progress was measured by getting a college degree and finding a job that pays the bills.

These days, progress involves being able to hold a fork, or making it to the restroom without assistance.

Being a CU fan is a little like being the parent of a kid who is disabled following an accident. The kid might not become president, but you still love him.

After the Bohn / DiStephano post scandal institutional control smack down, it's good to see the 2015 Buffs aren't drooling and the program is slurring fewer words than they used to.

It's still going to take a lot more therapy and more professional help to get this program back to competing for bowl eligibility and titles.

We dont have the horses to beat most of the teams in conference in our starter positions. Nor do we seem to have many on the bench either.

Oregon clearly had better and faster athletes at their skill positions on offense. We were not in that game though we had chances in the first half they ran away with it int he 2nd half. They beat us on paper now, next year, and for the foreseeable future.

Arizona State, no. Not. Never.

Arizona could have been winnable but we didn't practice for their dual QB and we could stop the running QB. When Randall went down I thought we had a chance IF he stayed out of the game because we couldn't account for him on the run. When he came back I knew we were toast.

Hawaii was at the beginning of the season. Should have player CSU instead. Frankly, flying in Tuesday for a Thursday game doesn't leave much time to correct for Jet Lag. By the 2nd half of the game, with that ridiculous kickoff time of 11pm Mountain, it was like 4am in the 2nd half. Sure, most people could stay up that late and many of us did. But did we try to play a challenging athletic contest that required intense mental focus? No, we did not.

Mac's third full class seems to be shaping up to be his best class. He's also made efforts in the past two classes to fill depth chart holes he inherited. You can see it on our OL and to a lesser degree on our DL. My feeling is that over time, Mac or not, the classes have to get stronger, the depth charter deeper, before we can win.

It usually evens out. Occasionally you'll have a season in which you catch breaks in the majority or suffer misfortune in a majority. We ****ed up and should have beaten Hawaii and the missed call at the end sucks. One of these years we'll "get the bounces", but you don't become a team that gets those bounces without having a winning culture to your core. It sounds cheesy, but Michigan State in recent years shows me it's not.

I'm having dejavu, this thread could have been copied and pasted from a year ago when we were so close to winning a few more games but didn't. That's not progress.

And Oregon State handed us a gift when they decided to play for the future by playing a QB who had never taken a snap at the college level and reshuffled their defensive backfield and we barely beat them. Rosen is going to be a lot bigger challenge than Nick Mitchell.

I am glad we won but it certainly was not any defining moment for this team. We have become a program that looks down to be sure there is someone beneath us rather than looking up to see who we have to leap over.

We've had issues with running QB's all season, but in hindsight, every game is winnable.

Not the only. But it was Freeman dominating the Buffs for the Duck offense and Buckner dominating the Buffs for the Duck defense.

Mods - please change thread title to "40 something CU fan b*tches about lack of progress between porn searches"

Anyone that doesn't see an improvement over the last few years is either obtuse or perpetually negative to make themselves feel better.

And by the way, we live in Colorado, so every year is a great f*cking year.

Where did I ever say anything about a lack of progress?
All I'm saying is we had a GREAT chance and blew a few opportunities.

Waitaminute. What makes you so sure Buff35 was leveling his criticism at you?

There may be over a dozen 40 something CU fans who bitch about the lack of progress between porn searches.

This is a strong contender as a new motto for the whole damn site.

Is there any meaningful difference to you between 4-8, 2-10 or 4-9? There isn't to me. So are you still going to be singing this tired tune when we finish 4-9? Progress is measured in wins, not close losses. Even the Pollyanna crowd was saying this was the year the close losses needed to become wins. It isn't (and the Pollyanna crowd has changed its tune - Pollyanna gonna Pollyanna).

Worse, I don't see how this team gets to six wins next year. It would require a win @Michigan, @Stanford, @Oregon, @USC or against ASU, UCLA or Utah. (This assumes wins against CSU, OSU, WSU and @Arizona, which is really going out on a limb (no sarcasm).) I don't know how to fix the program, but saying this team has progressed is a little disingenuous, particularly because the brunt of the schedule is still in front of us.
