I'll preface this by saying that I like Mac and I'm rooting for him to be successful here.

i think he bought some time with the UCLA game. Tough road game where we outplayed a good team. But I think he has to win at least 1 of these last 4 games. Stanford = loss so now he has 3 more tries. Each of these games is an potential upset and a chance to hang his hat on a turning point. If we go winless the rest of the way, I just can't see anyway that RG can keep him. Too much jnvested in facilities, and a critical recruiting class in 2017 that can't be mediocre which is what it would likely be if you have to make a coaching change at the end of next season.

RG needs some hope to sell for next year and 3 more losses going to allow him to do that.

I hope Mac finds a way to win all 3 of them.

There are no absolutes. If we get blown out like we did today to end the year the question had to be asked. The question had to be asked when we lost at ISU the. At home versus the bugeaters then the big 12 ccg.

That said, I think he stays if he keeps them competitive.

He's gotta get another win, most likely Wazzu, but any win will work. Another win gives the bit of hope to hire new assistant coaches, and to both keep the current recruiting class, and not look like losers on next years recruiting trail. If we lose out, MM's just dead coach walking, and everyone will know it.

As NM said no absolutes, but it would sure be good if we could somehow notch a second conference win this year and be competitive in the other games. More than anything I think our recruiting could use it.

i think beating wassu is a pipe dream.... sad but a 0-5 finish is in the cards right now.....

Wazzu qb is going to light up the Buffs....embree has to privately be laughing.... We started at the same point as Wazzu and look at where the pirate has taken them. And Anderson will right the ship at OSU

all this being said i still think mac II deserves another year.... if he can once again upgrade his staff so much the better

Put yourself in RG's shoes why would you keep HCMM? If you extend him you are putting your endorsement behind him so if you find a guy that you think can be better why not pull the trigger. Either way it's him making his first football hire and you only get so many, if it were me I'd bring in my guy. Next season it's the same players (you know except for the best receiver ever) and the same coaches equal the same results. Only way RG creates excitement and more ticket sales more fund raising is changing the only thing he can.

Why would he be laughing? I dont even want to think where we would be if he was still here.

This is the only reason I see a firing...RG feels he has no financial choice. I'd expect RG to ask Mac for his plan (probably routine) and if it's doing the same thing over again expecting a different result, then I'd have a big issue if I were RG.

FWIW...Leach has one more year at Wazzou than Mac has here...
Yep, and through 3 years Leach had won 7 conference games and went bowling in year 2. Not a good comparison to make if you're a fan of keeping Mac.

If Mac loses out, he has to go IMO. That 2017 class is too important to give to a guy coaching for his job. There won't be a massive assistant coach overhaul this off-season (maybe a position coach or two), but we're not getting another Leavitt type name in here - who would sign on to a lame duck season if they have options? So if you keep Mac, you have to believe that he can start winning next year with this roster and largely this staff. I'm not seeing anything to make me believe suddenly everything comes together next year, but some will. Is RG one of them?

I don't care if Mac stays or not, but I don't think Leach inherited as ****ty a team as Mac did. Not making excuses, just trying to be objective.

Bull. You clearly made that comment about him being in his 4th year as some justification for keeping Mac another year and it's a bad comparison.

WSU under Paul Wulff went 9-40 and 4-32 in conference.

CU pre Mac: Hawk 6-15 (2-11 in conference) along with Embree at 4-21 (3-15 in conference) bringing us to a grand total of 10-36 (6-32 in conference)

I don't think that's really any better or worse than what Mac wandered into. And Leach took them bowling in year 2.

I'm sorry, but this isn't true. 2011 WSU (the year before Leach took over) was a very bad football team, but 2012 CU (the year before MM took over) was as bad as any FBS/Div 1 P5 team has ever been. Consider:

  • 2011 WSU won 2 conference games. 2012 CU won 1.
  • 2011 WSU won 4 games, including 4 against FBS teams. 2012 CU had 1 win, and lost to an FCS team AT HOME
  • 2011 WSU lost one game by 30 points: #7 Stanford beat them 14-44. 2012 CU lost 5 games by 30 points or more, including to G5 Fresno State (69-14). In addition, they also lost to UCLA by 28. 4 of the losses were by more than 40 points, and 2 were by more than 50.
  • 2011 WSU's average margin of defeat in conference games was 16.3 points. 2012 CU's avg margin of defeat in conference games was 34.6 points. In other words, 2011 WSU didn't lose a single conference game by as many points as CU's AVERAGE conference deficit
2012 CU is and will always be one of the absolute worst P5 teams ever to see the field.

In my opinion, implementing a gimmicky system like Leach's has a higher floor but a lower ceiling. Consider that while Leach won an average of 8.4 games in 10 seasons in Lubbock, he never won fewer than 7 but also only broke double digit wins once.

What's the ceiling under Mac? We've seen the floor. We're not hiring Leach, so it doesn't really matter anyway, but I don't see how you can favorably compare Mac to Leach at this point, but you guys can keep trying.

A lot of the Leach love around here recently (a bit strange to me I'll admit) seems to be predicated on him being better than HCMM. However, if HCMM is as bad as he's made out to be, being better than him isn't really much of a feat. It's kind of like when people say we're better under HCMM than Embree. As Duff often comments, that's damning with faint praise.

Have we seen the floor, though? Imagine we keep MM, Leavitt goes to KSU, we lose the FL kids and lose to CSU next year. IMO, 1-11 or 2-10 next year is about as likely as going 7-6.

It is more likely than not that CU will finish this season having won 2 conferences games under MM in 3 years. There should be signs of life in year 3, sorry. It does not take a decade to turn around a football team. If the first and the second year suck, so be it. There is still no tangible evidence, btw, that MM has recruited a serviceable QB to our program. Given the success of David Fales, he should have been able to do that, at a bare minimum. If he can't sell that guy's success during his last year at SJSU to QBs, then he can't recruit at all. That's a big problem.

Something else that's not being given enough consideration: The 4 teams we have beaten this year are a combined 9-28. We may be a better team than the last few seasons, but let's keep some perspective - we are not good.

Interesting. Thanks. I wonder what their recruiting was like and if they had the turnover we had.
