BSN: Colorado athletic director Rick George: ‘Mike MacIntyre is going to be our coach next...

Ah yes, it’s November and you can smell it in the air, hot seats and speculation reaching their boiling points. Who will be back and who will not?

With Colorado only having one conference win in the last two years and just two in the three years under Mike MacIntyre, it’s not surprising that Mac has come up in those talks, but today, in an interview with Neill Woelk of CUBuffs.com, Colorado AD Rick George did his best to quell any of that speculation.

“I’ve said it publicly several times: Mike MacIntyre is going to be our coach next year,” George said. “There’s really nothing to discuss. I’ve said it several times, and nothing has changed. People have asked and I’ve said the same thing: Mike’s going to be our coach. Let’s move on to the next topic.”

Now, of course, we’ve all seen the ol’ “vote of confidence” retracted time after time, but for Mike MacIntyre who is trying to recruit a team for the future and certainly plans on being back next year, it is big for him to be able to go into households and get on the phone with Rick George’s blessing in his back pocket. Plus, at this point we have no reason to believe George isn’t telling us the truth.

While it has yet to manifest itself in the win column, a lot has gone right in the Mike MacIntyre era at Colorado, so it shouldn’t come as a shock to most if he gets another chance to truly get this thing turned around last year.

Also in the interview with Woelk, who has been a fantastic addition for the athletic department, George does his best to quell any speculation that he may take the AD opening at his Alma Mater, Illinois.

You can read Woelk’s full piece here.

I'd say that's pretty definitive. So for those of us who have been saying MM isn't going anywhere this year, can we point to this as evidence?

While it seems apparent that Mike Mac will be back, I am a bit more worried about RG leaving for Illinois. He says basically no one has contacted him from Illinois, calls it his "dream job" at one point in his life and doesn't want to speculate. Sounds like he'd listen if they did call. Perhaps I'm just being paranoid.

Disappointing, but understandable. Lets hope Mac has some more Leavitt/Tumpkin type hires in him this offseason.

Obligatory mention that if Neinas returns I'm going full blown fire Mac for the entirety of next season.

I got the same thing as you did from his answer. Hopefully no one from Illinois see's his comments.

Spot on, except I haven't been on a fire Mac bandwagon. I've said numerous times I don't think he's the guy, but I wasn't sure yet. Retaining Neinas would make me certain. Getting bent over by WSU would make me certain. Etc.
So then, Todd Graham should be fired? He was just bent over last week.

I'm holding out hope for a win but this isn't the same ol' Coug team.

It sounds like he'd bolt in a second if he got a good offer from Illinois. Hopefully his wife would put the nix on that, as Champaign is a ****hole, and Boulder is freaking gorgeous.

To me, this means there are no on-the-field performance criteria for MacIntyre. Likely 2-25 in the PAC 12, bottom ranked recruiting class every year, lost to the worst team in the Mtn West in Hawaii (who fired their coach the same year) in year 3, with an AD whose publicly stated objective was to get to a bowl game and win games. None of it matters - as long as he remains a nice guy and recruit high character kids who are good students, and stay out-of-trouble, MacIntyre is apparently as good as gold at CU. The priorities are clear - IMO, this is a repeat of the Hawkins error, bringing back a lame duck coach, and now CU risks losing Leavitt, too, since he won't be a head coaching candidate here. This is a potentially disastrous outcome.

Oh, does Todd Graham only have 2 conference wins in 3years too? He probably should in that case.

I fail to see why you're so upset here. Would you be particularly happy if Mac decided to retain Neinas? Tell me you wouldn't be wondering what the **** Mac is thinking if that scenario played out.

You just gotta let that Duke model play out and shut the hell up.

I'm not a defender of MacIntyre-he's done an OK job in three years. Brian Lindgren needs to go for me to be happy with this, but I can live with it, and heres why:

This isn't Hawkins-Hawkins had more time than MacIntyre, and by the time that happened, it was clear that whatever Hawkins was doing wasn't working and wasn't going to ever work. Not only that, but I think the AD is run differently under RG-I think he had the latitude from above to make a change if he saw fit to do so, unlike that example.

This is purely speculation-Had we bought him out, we'd owe him $6m. (Howell) I think George didn't want to make a coaching change but would have done so if he felt he had to (back to back winless campaigns in conference would be in this category), and in his ideal world, he'd get a chunk of the facilities paid off before he did.

Two, there are way too many openings already that are better than this one. That was a factor in Tracy Claeys (the Minnesota DC/interim coach) being promoted today. USA Today put a piece out about a month ago that discussed openings and potential openings (we made the list), and connected names like Matt Wells (Utah State), Troy Calhoun, and Mike Bloomgren (Stanford OC) to it. I'd have a hard time saying "Let's pull a CSU and go get an SEC coordinator" right now, because theres not one I'm impressed with right now. None of those names do anything for me-Wells is riding Gary Anderson's coattails, Bloomgren's offense wasn't anything special, and Calhoun.........Well, lets say that's been discussed ad nauseum by us. If we knew we had a shot at a Justin Fuente/Tom Herman type, I'd be all for making a change. We don't.

Thirdly, this lays it on the table for MM pretty well-Get to a bowl in 2016, or you'll be out.

I'll believe it when I see it. If CU loses out, I still think MikMac is on very thin ice. It could go either way. If he stays, RG is going all in on a pair of nines....hope it pays off.

I do find it really weird that some in the media still manage to screw up buyout terms. Teams are never paying out the full value of a contract.

I think he'd listen if Illinois called, but think about what's going on there. There's an interim chancellor. They're paying Mike Thomas (the old AD) a $2.5 million dollar buyout. Tim Beckman is suing them for wrongful termination, and the Chicago press believes Illinois might have honored Thomas' buyout in return for his testimony in the Beckman case. Its a mess. Not only that, but Rick currently has a bigger base than Thomas did (700k to 550ish) and who knows how the incentives match up.

CU is not nearly as disadvantaged as Duke when it comes to recruiting football players. Same for Northwestern. Stanford. If CU was an elite, private university then the "Duke model" might make a lick of sense. CU should be looking at top quartile public schools as their model.

Yeah I agree, Duff is stupid.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that Rick George had a dream job before he came here - Chief Operating Officer of the Texas Rangers. Not many people leave a gig like that for an AD job. The fact is I think RG obviously viewed returning to Boulder as a bit a of a dream. I don't think it's a slam dunk that he would leave for U of I if offered. Not at all. Of course he'll listen. It's his alma mater. He doesn't want to disrespect them and I'm sure there is a part of him who would love to take on that challenge. Also, he's a smart business man. Of course he will leverage other opportunities to get a few more bucks or an extension out of the CU admin. All things being equal, he'd probably bolt. All things are not equal. We're in the middle of a major facilities upgrade that will start paying dividends in recruiting. Rick had deep roots here and probably cares about Colorado's success more than he would anywhere else except maybe his alma mater. The biggest trump card we have is Boulder. My sister went to U of I class of '97. I visited her for graduation. Champaign sucks balls! The town vibe is a lot closer to Greeley than to Boulder. No scenery. No mountain activities. The campus itself is nice-ish but it doesn't hold a candle to the beautiful CU architecture. If the wife has any say (and they usually do) she's got to be another check mark in the Boulder column.

My previous employer had this problem. Let a guy go (old management) in a wave of layoffs (new management) that was near retirement. Found out later when legal called he was a key witness in a lawsuit against the company and he wasn't cooperating. They gave him everything he asked for at that point including back pay since the layoff.

I agree, Big Jim. I'm not sure what the **** Duff was thinking in that post. You just can't compare the two programs.
