The Bad:
27.5 points per game allowed (70)---Keep in mind this represents a 12 point improvement from last season and 50 places better than last season, so not even necessarily that bad
24.6 points per game scored (97)

The Ugly:

34.3 net punting average (118)
Red zone offense (120)

Thanks for compiling these, Duff. Does a pretty good job of highlighting where staff improvement is needed.

Yeah, I have been a pretty vocal critic of Jeffcoat, but hard not to see the improvement there, even without Tupou.

Everyone knows Toby sucks. Hard to justify keeping Bernardi either. Lindgren needs some help if he stays on.
 
2 major things to shore up:
1. ST disaster. If Toby isn't fired asap I will lose my mind.
2. Passing Game. OL had pass-pro issues, QB play was sub-standard and WR's had trouble getting open. TE rarely used. I will say that the RBs and WRs seem to do well blocking in general. It just got magnified in the RedZone.

Seriously, how hard can it be to improve to mediocre on special teams? If I see Diego Gonzales kicking for us next year, I'm going to be very disappointed. I don't know if we can get a kicker in here and cut him loose or not, but if it's at all possible, we need to do so.
 
Field Goals, don't get me started. Tired of a lot of ****. Giving up 3rd and like 17, that would be one as well. Not finishing drives, that's up there too. I don't wanna talk about it. Tired of making qbs look like Can Newton. I hope the younger guys are tired of this by now and bring it daily, that's how u get better.
 
Neinas can't stay as ST coordinator (we've been saying that every year). New OL coach. Those are needs.

I wouldn't mind new Recruiting coordinator, or really anyone else on offense.

I'm good with our coordinators.
 
Interesting. We stated wanting to get significantly better in takeaways, rushing TD's, and sacks. However, we took major steps back in areas we were pretty good in last year.

FYI - Special teams are a complete joke

Can't argue with facts and what Duff posted are facts.

Long post but here goes

The net punting avg. would be even worse if we compared it against our opponents net punting average against us. Don't know the number but considering that we had very little pressure on punters and almost no return yardage I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't have something like a 40-50 yard per game differential, that's hard to make up on a consistent basis.

As to field goals we need to find the top 3-4 kickers in our recruiting footprint who are without a BCS offer and show them film of Diego. Get 2-3 of them to walk on knowing that whoever wins the competition will end up as the starter and get a scholly. By the way kicking off into the end zone would be a bonus.

Either way Nienas needs to go away. There are GA's out there who could do a better job than he has.

This may be gallons of kool-aid but I think our QB play will improve with better OL play and I think our OL will be better next year. Still not great, maybe even not good, but notably better than this year. Everyone comes back there except for Nembot and frankly I consider him addition by subtraction. Great guy, great story, great athlete, lousy football player. I go so mad watching him stand there with his hands on his hips while his man got up off the ballcarrier. In his final game as a Buff he wiffed on his man getting Apsay hurt and ending our hopes of getting a final win.


Kelley had issues with his shotgun snaps but that is fixable. He played decently otherwise and another off-season in the weight room will make him better. Irwin should be back and if he can stay healthy he will be our best lineman. Kough and Kronsage will be better and another year stronger. Lisella shouldn't have played this year but did. His experience added to his rate of physical development should make him much better. Add Lynot, Middlemiss, and Sutton to the mix and while still not impressive we should be better. I think we could get even better if Bernardi wasn't the OL coach.

The receivers and RBs will get better with better blocking. At RB I think we are solid with Lindsay and Carr and Lee as a multi-dimension guy. We will see what we have in the young guys but losing Powell there doesn't hurt us at all right now. Losing Spruce does but in a way it may be good because we start to try to be multi-dimensional passing instead of just living on Spruce and more Spruce. S. Irwin showed some things at at the end of the season and Keeley looks interesting as well at TE. Fields needs better concentration but can be a game breaker. We have some other WRs who are interesting as well but we may end up counting on a true freshman as well. I don't want to see any more of Ross unless he is playing DB or learns how to catch more balls than he flat drops.

DL similar to the OL situation with Tupou replacing Solis.

LB was terrible this year (and last year, and the year before, and, and ) We will still be bad. I believe that our freshmen this year in Falo and Watanabe will be a big improvement for next year. Still no depth though. Not counting at all on Gillam, if he plays for us it's pure bonus at this point.

Not going into details but we should be solid at DB as well. Losing some guys but we have depth to work with. What our DBs really need is for the line to put some pressure on the passer and for the LBs to not be a total failure in pass coverage and in letting teams run to a point that they have the advantage all the time. A few more third and longs would make our DBs look better.
 
@MtnBuff, gotta disagree on your OL take. A lot. Nembot is not addition by subtraction. Offensive tackle is a major concern, especially the depth. We have issues at every position (even Irwin is a question mark right now).

Yep.Nembot was a 3+ year starter for a reason. And it's not like we have a high profile recruit to plug in next year like we'll have when Kelley passes the torch to Lynott.
 
One of my favorite Buff message board traditions is naming a bunch of guys who were lightly recruited and who played awful all year but saying they will be good the next year because they'll have six months in the weight room. It's already starting.

In August we'll hear how the O line had a great summer and how we have Bobo, Lee, Ross, Walker, Carr, etc coming back even though none of those guys has proven squat.

I'm not optimistic we'll be any better next year. I just don't see where the improvement comes from. We lose our best offensive player and there's no one close to as good (maybe a healthy Fields) coming back. The O line is atrocious and pretty much devoid of talent if recruiting rankings and performance-to-date is any indication. The only hope is that Montez is the real deal. We need a program-changing talent at QB.

I like what I saw from Lee, Carr, and Bobo.
 
We have some playmakers on offense that can help win in the Pac 12. The problem is that they are all in dependent positions like RB and WR that only have a ceiling as high as their QB and OL are able to take them.

We are thin at tackle (both in numbers and in the physical stature of our players.) Nembot was a big, long armed guy who looked great coming off the bus. He was also a 3+ year starter. I believe he was a starter simply because we didn't have anybody else. He was making the same basic mistakes his last game as he did in his first season. He gave up easy sacks, he had a habit of picking up drive killing penalties, he looked great for 7-8 plays then would do something that killed a drive and all momentum.

His replacement won't be his physical match but if he isn't technically better we are lost. I agree that we are all question marks but I think we will be better. With Nembot I knew that he was going to blow a certain number of plays, I'd rather have a question mark.
 
Seriously man, did he come to your house and drop an upper decker in your master bath? The vitriol you've had for that kid in particular just seems a bit excessive.
 
No, I actually like him and respect him a great deal. He seems like a quality human being who has worked hard to get an education and wants to help people. He has also been a quality teammate and stuck through some tough times.

I just have seen a guy who is grossly overrated by our fanbase as a football player. He gives up way to many clean shots by guys he was supposed to block. I have just gotten very tired of him in that "I just got beat again" pose.
 
Oline is a problem going into next year, no matter how we try to paint the picture. My hope is finding a different coach and creating a minor miracle with that group.

I'm with Mtn on this one. he gave up too much. I think the world of him, but he's more frustrating than most.
 
Leavitt had the D going well enough to have us bowling. That 70th ranked in points against is a miracle for a defense that couldn't stop anyone the year before.

I don't know if I've ever seen an offense continually **** its pants inside the red zone like this one did. If it weren't for the revelation of the Sefo power run - which we didn't need to find until October because of the soft early schedule - our offensive numbers would have been ever worse.

This was the year we were going to own the 4th quarter. Back to the drawing board.
 
Even the newspaper is pointing out how awful special teams have been. When the idots at the BDC can see there's a problem, you know there's a problem.

Neinas has got to be gone. Has to. It's the biggest glaring weakness on the team. The OL can be chalked up to injuries to a point, but special teams have been atrocious for a long time and there's no positive trajectory.
