CU rec center... wow

So, I had the chance to go up to the CU rec center on Friday. I haven't been there since it was remodeled.

That place is incredible. Way better than when I was a student there. The facility is HUGE, and the basketball courts on the second level are insane. I don't know how many courts they have - 8 maybe? Including the lower courts? But there is a massive glass window that faces north, and you can see off the ridge to the north boulder area. Just a spectacular setting.

Huge climbing wall area, and then tons of fitness rooms on the bottom level. I saw a room for spin, resistance training, and boxing. The ice rink has been significantly cleaned up and modernized.

I'm sure I missed a ton, but I'm very jealous of that great facility for current students. If you are a student on this board, I hope you are taking advantage of it!

Some images, but honestly they don't do it justice:

I'm a fan. I work out there when I'm in town. Best facility I've ever seen.

Spent as much time as I could (which wasn't much) at "the Rec" when I was at CU Law from 95-98. Particularly enjoyed the ice rink ... though not a great skater I enjoyed the exercise and the occasional skating date with a comely classmate. Ahhh ... fond memories.

Looking forward to touring the renovated Rec Center ... thanks for posting, @dio.

I spent a lot of time in the rec center but you wouldn't know it today. Last time I was in there my boss and I were trying to grease the wheels to win the bid for the exercise equipment.

CU has an ice rink? We need a hockey team! Tear everything down around that rink and make a stadium! To hell with this rec center! :sneaky:

I saw it for the first time when I was out there for the Arizona game this year. It was indeed impressive and I agree that the coolest part was the glass wall by the basketball courts upstairs. My only gripe is that they didn't do anything with the pool. The new outdoor Buffalo pool is cool, but it was already officially closed by the Arizona game (I did jump in just to say I did), and I imagine it won't reopen for quite some time. The students are still left without an Olympic sized pool and there is still no suitable pool for the water polo teams despite consistent good showings by the club teams nationally.

The pool is a pet gripe of mine though. Overall the facility is beautiful. Good job to those who organized it and got it done.

Agree with the pool comment. That was the only sadness.

It's not just your pet gripe. It was identified as a problem before they broke ground on the facility update.

But... Your complaint is actually with the choices of 19 year old students, not the administration. Because it was mostly (completely?) built with student fees, they had the students vote on what to build. Unsurprisingly, when the students saw the mock ups with the resort style outdoor pool, that's what they chose. They forgot that outdoor pools in Colorado are generally closed during the months school is actually in session. Dumbasses.
