We have a huge number of visitors between this week, last week and next week. Several of those have high interest in us. So how many more spots do we estimate are available? And do gray shirts count against the limit?

Grayshirts count toward next year's class. With 11 current commits set to be on campus this year, 15-16 is the likely number IMO.

Cant you just write an executive order and get us out of this?

Sincerely,
I voted for you.

To really answer your question, a lot of factors in play. One, how many will grayshirt? Two, how many are leaving? Three, who is getting the extra spot and is he better than the guy ur giving room for? If I had to guess, I'd say 15 to 18. Not to be a dick, I'm all for a kid trying to get his degree, it's just you only have so many spots. Getting rid of someone is how it works. If you help them find a place, I'm cool with it. Of course, all situations are different and that's on the staff to ascertain.

I cannot see 18, unless you are counting Davis Webb and Sheriron Jones in that number.

What are you doing about this stock market crash? You need to nuke the Saudi oil fields to cut production,

Thing is, I don't know what's going down behind the scenes. If the staff does what they are accustomed to do, there probably won't be much attrition. I hope I'm wrong.

85 scholarships allowed for football in total
25 scholarships allowed for football in a signing class
Grayshirts can either be counted into the current year or next year (they arrive on campus the following January)
CU had 9 scholarship seniors graduate, with Walker and Wilson the only announced attrition that I'm aware of

So CU has 11 scholarship openings for this class (as far as we know).
Sheriron Jones and Kabion Ento have already transferred into CU (enrolled). Josh Tupou expected back.
Chatter seems to be that around 15 will sign on LOI Day.

A scholarship is a contract. If a kid is doing his part do get better in the weight room, film room and on the practice field I can't see pushing him out even if he is not a major contributor as it would set the wrong tone within the program. On the other hand if a kid is coasting and not doing what it takes to improve then he is not living up to his end of the deal, move 'em out. Rippy and Wright come to mind.

And Wantanabe.

What about medical retirements? Allows the school to keep him on scholarship while not counting him against the 85 limit and ends his eligibility to play football at the school. There are certainly some guys who would be justified from that standpoint. (Big thing is that it allows the player to earn a degree instead of him being kicked to the curb, which benefits both the player and the school now that grad rates and APR are so much more important than they used to be.)

True but it's yearly. You are thinking from a moral standpoint, it's a business. If you don't think that, I don't know what to tell you. You win or pack your bags. I know Texas high schools that give less leash than Mac has. It's all about earning your pay.

It's my uninformed impression that some schools over sign recruits and knowingly put their scholarship number over the threshold, forcing attrition. Is that how the cut throats of the college football world occasionally cull the herd, or is that not allowed?

I realize that essentially taking a scholarship away from an athlete in whatever manner can be unethical, but taking up space on a roster while not putting forth effort is just as unethical, IMO. Keeping in mind that these "kids" are actually adults, whose peers are faced with graver circumstances on a regular basis, it's easy to want them to give it their full effort.

There seems to be a lot of grey area, and from the outside we can only guess at what is really happening, no?

Go Buffs! (Pretty Please?)

Are you saying ethics don't have a place in business? Ethics should matter everywhere. Outing a kid who is living up to his end of the deal is not good for anyone including the football team. Unethical treatment of the student athletes gets back to parents and HS coaches and it has long term negative effects on the program. By the same token, if they are freeloaders....get'em out.

My guess is they have 2-3 current commits they have told they will have to greyshirt and there are a number of scholarship guys the coaches are pushing out the door. Yuri Wright and Deysean Rippy did not even see the field. My guess is they are told we will help you transfer but you aren't playing for us so let's figure out something fair to both parties.

If Wright, Rippy, Johnny Walker, Watanbe are out. That leaves 14 schollies.

Ento, Sheriron Jones account for 2 of those.

Noyer, Udofifa, Blackmon, Julmisse, Roberts, Jones, Huntley are the ones I see as definitely not greyshirt.

We know Vaughn and Pursell are Grayshirts. Lytle, Rakestraw, Taylor Jr could all be candidates.

It appears the Buffs have 2 schollies open and 3 more that they could say greyshirt to if they get better players. Hell, Noyer could be told with the Sheriron Jones commit that we think you have a better chance putting weight on your bones. It is a cutthroat business. You have to over offer and sometimes you have to change the way you handle young men if you want to WIN and get the best players possible. #1 priority is keeping Huntley and then getting some of these guys late like the La Mirada terror!

We don't need more grayshirts. 2 OLs is plenty. Hopefully offset a couple more we want if we can (WR Fairman with a JUCO stop/ OLB Pututau with a mission).

That's enough.

Taylor Jr. will not greyshirt. Raktestraw and Roberts would both be good greyshirt candidates though depending on who wants to commit.

Pushing up to five players to grayshirt would be dumb.
Don't disagree. But, we need immediate help and if we can get it with a couple JUCOs or immediate impact freshman you say sorry or grayshirt a guy over telling a better player no thanks.

You can satisfy those goals via normal attrition. All adding to the grayshirt numbers does is to affect the next class negatively. Outside of one of the two JUCO WRs, Webb, and one of the high school LBs, we can survive without the others.

Time to be more cutthroat and level the playing field with the serious football schools. Trim the fat if we've got better kids signing - from either existing players or currently committed players. It's a business.

We have been surviving for 10 years. If a guy that is in on us late due to the addition of DChev, you don't turn him down if he is much better than some of these guys who have no legit P5 offers.
