Recruiters matter. Period.
And they can recruit better when they have something to sell.Recruiters matter. Period.
This is one of my main beefs with MMac...bringing in a MWC mentality to the PAC12. He brought a below average staff and with it below average recruiting. I think he thought he could target MWC level talent and coach them up. Ugh. The turnaround would be further along if it weren't for his initial bad decisions IMO.Higher expectations. Until now, HCMM targeted San Jose-level recruits. Guys like JMFL and Chev are smart enough to know that those level of athletes are never going to cut it in the Pac12.
As McElwain showed, you must recruit above your conference and have coaches that belong in your conference. He knew he needed P5 coaches at UF, so he said, thanks for the help, got to get better coaches/recruiters. The ventriloquist in this is Rick George whether people believe it or not. He is helping to pull the strings and say, cut bait on the dead weight. Bernardi seems like a waste of a staff member. You want a young stud coaching where he is, not a guy that has fallen out of favor with OL group. This is one of my main beefs with MMac...bringing in a MWC mentality to the PAC12. Totally agree. I wonder if part of MMac's reason for keeping his staff was that he didn't want to have to train coaches on his system, philosophy and culture...maybe he thought let's keep what works...at least worked there. As McElwain showed, you must recruit above your conference and have coaches that belong in your conference. He overestimated it, it is common. It's tough to cut people that helped you get somewhere but sometimes you have to realize in order to keep moving up, you have to improve the people around you. It looks like he understands this. I like Mac, just was not pleased with how last year transpired. Stayed stagnant.Totally agree. That's another beef I have with him. All we heard about in the spring and fall was how they were going to finish games etc and then to come out and have the team drop a turd like in Hawaii and then choke like usual in winnable games really pissed me off. It's tough to know where coaching ends and playing begins, but he's gotta take some of the blame for that fiasco. This team's identity as chokers only solidified last year. Ugh.just was not pleased with how last year transpired. Stayed stagnant.
