Cody was OK, but...

he is not big time, IMO. I hope he doesn't deter CU from recruiting big time QB's. The fact that he is the coaches kid could hurt us.

He played a great game. Imagine the pressure; first game, in-state rival, Invesco field. Man, you should be happy. You've got a great QB and if he lives up to his first start, your offensive leadership is sound for the next four years!

Cody will be a great College QB, I was very frustrated in the 2nd Q watching all the pass deflections, he will adjust this year to that. Throws a nice ball, knows the system, he will be fine

WTF???

I thought he played pretty well, given he's a redshirt freshman who's never played a single college football game before. He managed the game well, he rallied his offense back from an 11 point deficit, and got the W.

Yes, he has some limitations (his height and arm strength, mainly) that the coaches will have to address-- but I thought he played solid in his first start.

he did well for a guy making his first start, i thought.

we all know his physical limitations but damn the kid makes good reads and he goes thru his progression really, really fast. that, coupled with his quick release, can compensate for a lot at this level.

the jury is out, but i thought it was an encouraging start.

He has good timing for the most part and his throws are very accurate. I think he made a good start for his first college game...I was impressed and relieved.

Are you clammering for the return of B-jax behind center .

I thought he did pretty well considering...but I think Ballinger could give him a run next year and that might get messy!

I don't think we have to worry too much about this. Wins will bring the young guns in even if the coach's son is the starter.

I think Ballenger will be nipping at his heels next year and Hawkins will put the best man on the field.

A true competitor won't be scared off, he'll show up to challenge for the starting job and get it if he's better.

Considering the circumstances,
CODY WAS ****IN AWESOME!

I am excited he will be under center the next 4 years. Leader and a winner!

about ballenger, watching his pregame warm ups, his passes were not as crisp as nelson's or cody's. His arm also seems to be the weakest. It could be because he is a freshman this year but i think cody's job will be safe for at least another year after this IMO.

I like Ballenger. But Cody is our QB for the next four years. Things won't get messy. Cody did a great job considering that his first game was nationally televised rivalry game at invesco. jmo.

i guess you can post 5 million times and still be an idiot

He played great for his first Div 1 start and as a redshirt freshman making all of what? 19. And he played against a CSU that was better than I expected. He also didnt toss an int in OT.

I saw a lot of other things from the Buffs that concerened me and Cody was the least of it. Our defense's inability to stop CSUs offense consistantly validates my assesment that we are a work in progress. Helflichs aversion for trickery could be sign of something bad for our offense. That direct snap play worked once and backfired the other three times.

Agreed. how many times did we see that?

My question is why didn't we see the deep pass more?

Cody lacks the arm strength for the deep ball. He is an accuracy guy. His other achiles heal is that he is less than 6' tall and that is why he had either two or three tips today.

Don't expect to see the deep pass with Cody Hawkins- he just doesn't have the arm to reach back and fire a pass 40+ yards in the air.

If the Bufs throw any bombs this year they will likely be plays where a wide receiver's route is run in such a way that he is open and Cody gets him the ball and the receiver takes it to the house.

I could see JFly being able to take a 20 yard pass and turn it into an 80 yarder.

Cody looked fine to me.. Not sure what game you guys were watching.. So he isn't going to be a 1st round draft pick.. Doesn't mean he can't be a successful college QB..

Geez, and I'm the one here usually getting criticized for being negative.. :sad2:

I thought Cody did great considering it was his first collegiate action. He has tons of heart and leadership and he makes good decisions. He will be a good college level qb.

He will also never be great given his physical limitations. If we have a guy on the roster who could be great, then he will replace Cody when he's ready. IMO no one will be close until at least late next year or the year after that. I just really don't think Cody will be the guy for 4 years. We will get someone even better.

i think that many of you are underestimating how beneficial it is to have a QB who is capable of reading what is going on in the field.

i have often said that i would take a smart qb over someone who could lob it 60 yards anyday.

cody has earned the respect of this team. without his firect leadership 2-3 times yesterday, there would have been some clock mistakes which could have been costly.

ladyblaise, that's the smartest thing I've read all day-thank you

if arm strenght is something that can be worked on, then i'll take cody hawkins over anyone right now in our squad.

and btw. Sumler>Charles.

Cody's arm strength is not an issue. Did you see the 2 out passes he threw, 1 for TD to Geer and 1 for a first down on 3rd and 3. Those passes were beautiful. Thrown to the only spot his receiver could make the catch without and INT. If he can make those kind of throws with accuracy his arm strenght is not a question for me.

How many times do you need to throw the ball 60 yards vs throw an 5 -6 yard out pass? As long as he can continue to do the latter with consistency, he will be just fine.
