Bill Connelly's Buff Preview is Out

An ok write up. Definitely a pretty surface level look though. A couple players coming back, a couple that are gone that he missed.

Gives me hope since it provides strong evidence that the "hiccup" in improvement was due to injury. Just look at the timeline.

I hate how the injury bug always seems to bite where you can least afford it... It has happened two years in a row now.

He missed that Tupou is coming back, but other than that he's pretty spot on.

I think a lot of people are missing on the fact that Tupou being suspended for 2015, causing him to be back for 2016, is maybe the biggest stroke of good fortune we could have gotten for this year. Take Tupou out of the equation and I feel very different about the 2016 defense. Major difference maker.

Injuries always seem to hit those teams that can least afford it, like us. Every team has injuries, that is a part of football. The difference is that a team like USC or Stanford or Oregon has a 4* soph or jr. who would likely be next years starter ready to step in. Our backup is 20lbs underweight and hasn't seen the field coming off his RS year.

We have improved to the point where our starting line-ups at least belong on the field with other PAC12 teams without embarrassing ourselves. 3 years ago it was hard to find 5 Buffs who would be on the 2 deep for more than a few teams in our conference, now most of our starters could play somewhere else. Problem is that our depth is still substantially below our competition.

Good news is that we have improved in that area every year under M2, expect this year to be more of the same.

I agree. I think he will make a huge difference. I was impressed with Carrell last year and Tupou's return will only make him better.

Well, that was depressing.

I agree with the guys math and stats, but nothing really on X factor items such as Tupou. We have many other athletes coming in that are game chargers as well.

That being said, I would put our over/under at 5. Given that he has it at 4.3, we don't exactly disagree.

But the other side of that coin is that he may have gotten us to a bowl game last year, with all those close games.

Speculative is speculative. Phil Steele is the only one that ever really consistently seemed to nail it due to his gambling odds maker background.

The fact is, which is what makes college football so great, is that invisible X variable that changes everything; the unknown kid that emerges from out of nowhere and changes the outcome, the odd bounce of the ball the wrong way, the injuries that alter team destiny, player heart and emotion.

College football. It's magical!

What is odd/disturbing to me is that Connelly's statistical analysis showed didn't that CU's defense didn't improve from 2014 to 2015.

You can predict this stuff till your blue in the face. If I was them, I'd listen to nothing. We are building talent, just play.

When your offense regresses, your defense gets out in worse situations.

Several with legit shots at being All-American in fact. It's almost July.....
I get the point - but wouldn't you agree we have more athletic ability hitting the field at the skill positions in 2016 than we have in years? And I'm not talking about "We got bigger, stronger, faster in the off season!", I'm referring to net new key contributors (Bisharat, Winfree, Jan, Huntley, Maka)

I would agree but that doesn't mean a damn thing unless they show it on the field. I'd say the jury is still out but don't get me wrong, I like the direction it's going, it's a start.

Pretty much what BuffLuke said. I like the direction, but who knows who takes control? Could be a vet like Bobo who rises and a newcomer (sure bet) turns out to not be what we hoped. I'm always surprised by guys like Gillam, Dizon, Hypolite, Pericek, Awuzie, Yuri, DScott, Rippy, etc. We were talking about Rippy as though he were a starter the last two off-seasons.

Staff is making a big play to upgrade the talent level and '17 guys may trump the '16 guys, especially at positions like WR. That's how we get better. Competition will sort it out.
