ESPN: Buffs defense has made great strides, but is it enough?

h/t to Maximus on the Scout board. For some reason, this didn't make it into our Newsroom. Fantastic article.

The questions are getting old; the answers, clichéd.

When, Mike MacIntyre, will your Colorado team breakthrough?

When, Mike MacIntyre, will the culture change be complete?

When Mike MacIntyre, will your team take the next step?

When? When? When?

But these are the wrong questions. And MacIntyre knows it, which is why he'll often respond with all of the pomp and verve of a paint-drying TED Talk.

Because while it might not be noticeable to the common observer, the Buffs have already broken through. The culture has changed. And the next step has already been taken.

The right question to ask is: When will all of the behind-the-scenes progress translate into wins?

Enough for what? The NC? Perhaps not, but last season under only a half-year of JMFL, it was good and competitive enough for a handful of wins that were left on the table for a variety of other reasons.
This year with a fully-installed system and the return of some key pieces, it is more than enough to win, including road "upsets" (upset in name only, since the press narrative is CU is still the weak sister.) Buffs could beat the Wooly-Irenes in Ann Arbor, Oregon lose to UN and they'd still be dogs in Eugene, because "pre-season ranked 11th in Pac".

This made it through to another thread where some turd burger used a quote to show how Mike MacIntyre supposedly blames the players for everything and himself and the staff for nothing.

This is an interesting stat that I hadn't heard...
Example: Stand up if you're a Power 5 program and forced a turnover in every game last season? Not so fast, Alabama. Or Washington or Utah or Stanford. That's right, the Buffs were the only Power 5 team to do it

HCMM changing the game up with his vision of corners. We are gonna be putting a lot of secondary guys into the league under his tutelage.

Ya I'll throw out some credit for the guy, report me like a man if you have a problem with it.

The players have to make plays. When they dont its the coaches fault?

I blame the coaches when they didnt prepare for something like Arizona's running QB that we couldn't stop. Or for the play calling. I cant blame them for Ross dropping the ball uncovered or flown blown coverage. Ultimately the game is about opportunities and mistakes; you get the ball, do something with it, and dont **** up.

Not Macs quote. Missed the point really.

I have no issues with the concept (or stating) that coaches bear the responsibility to set conditions for players to succeed and players have the responsibility for making the plays to succeed.

I have never seen a coach fumble a ball or throw an interception or throw a touchdown pass or run the ball into the end zone or sack a QB. I've seen coaches develop game plans that don't best use player capabilities and give them no chance to succeed.

Team doesn't just include players.

This was the quote you specifically mentioned in the other thread, referring to MM "blaming the players".
I read that quote, and what I hear is that the players have it within their control to change the outcomes of these close games, that if they can find a way to make one or two plays here or there, the outcome might be different, and it's no longer a matter of them being completely outclassed. If the players want to get over the hump, find a way to make 1 more play.

I have no problem with that quote at all.

Agreed. I am not absolving MM or the other staff members for their mistakes. I have been quite critical of Lindgren's play calling and I believe they've struggled with clock management at times, but I also believe there have been a lot of wins left on the field the past 2 seasons because 1 or 2 plays in those games just weren't made on the field. Maybe it does ultimately come back to the staff for not recruiting well enough from the beginning the have more talented players that do execute well enough, but that's a different argument.

It is also about instilling confidence in the players. The HC is saying, we are there, make the plays and we win. He couldn't say that when we weren't able to stay in games. The difference now is "make the plays that we know you can make".

Unfortunately for MacIntyre is that is sounds quite a bit like Hawkins. The burned -to-the-ground comments do as well. This is not to say that history is repeating itself, just that it starting to rhyme a bit.

I'm not going to dispute your point. But I do want to add some flavor to it. Hawkins said a lot of the right things. Most of it was coachspeak, but Hawkins had all the lines memorized. The problem wasn't with what he said, it was that he was an empty suit and there was no action that went with it. Self-promoting phony. I used to defend Embree a lot of times on this stuff because we got so sick of hearing certain things from Hawkins that our tolerance for it was destroyed.

For example, it's a standard coachism to say that the team shouldn't get too high or too low or to say that a few plays are the difference in a close game. But when we hear any of that stuff, Buff fans think of Hawkins and our internal organs go into spasm. :D

MacIntyre will be measured on wins and losses. If he doesn't deliver improvement as measured in the W-L columns I believe Mac will be shown the door at the close of the season.

I do think he has had quite a steep hill to climb to improve the team that he inherited. He has engineered a visible improvement on what Hawkins and Embree left. Yes, I do think the combo of Hawkins and Embree "burned this program to the ground." Under MacIntyre, we have a much more talented, team that actually looks like they play football. While not at the summit by any stretch, he should be better than halfway up the damn mountain by now. Time will tell.

As for the season, I have hope. I can't say that I had much of that over the past 10 years. I would love to see a shock the world season, and MacIntyre earn an extension, but I don't have a huge amount of confidence. Been bit by that dog before.

Kind of where I'm at, to be honest.

I'm going into the season expecting a lot of improvement but unsure how much winning that translates into.

I remain hopeful that we get one of those unexpectedly special years that make being a sports fan so much fun. And I do see the potential for that.
