Learnings from 2015 RMS game

I just watched the one hour highlight rerun of the 2015 RMS game on YouTube. Interestingly enough the CBS promos were about 20% of the game. Quite a few plays were not shown, but enough of the game was so that some ideas and considerations can be made for the 2016 RMS game next week.

OL/DL
I bunched these two groups together because I think that they may be the biggest position group upgrades this season over last. I have not been impressed with the OL that CU is going to trot out on the field this year, but after seeing the starters in the RMS last year I have to say that the OL should be relatively much better in 2016. The only possible spot that 2015 might have been better than 2016 is at RT.

2015 ............. 2016
LT Kronshage ...... Irwin
LG Kough ............. Kough
C Kelley .............. Kelley
RG Huckins .......... Lynott
RT Nembot ........... Kronshage

The DL has the best player back after missing last year, Tupou, and returns all of the other significant players. There is a lack of depth, but the starters are legit P5/P12 players. This should be an improved group in 2016 over 2015.

LB
The good news is that it cannot be any worse than last year. I keyed on Olugbode most of the defensive snaps in the broadcast and cannot imagine a worse ILB. He is not an LB, he has a safety's body and plays as physical as a PAT holder. If a blocker gets just one hand on him he is out of the play. I watched Moeller move up into the box on a few plays and for the life of me cannot figure out why Moeller isn't starting at ILB over Olugbode. Moeller is a little bigger and plays physical football, he doesn't run away from contact or get blown up by every blocker on the field. The improved DL will help, but this is going to be a loooong season for ILB play unless Gillam plays like he did 3 seasons ago which at this point is too much to hope for.

DB
Thompson is a thumper, but he as to wrap up better. Awuzie is a joy to watch, a real top shelf college football player. Moeller is a reasonable play maker, fun to watch his physical style of play. I still think he would be better ILB than what we have now, but Moeller is a reasonable player at the P12 level. All things considered, this group could be better than last year, no worse for sure.

QB
Sigh. We've been over this a million times, but watching Liufau just reminded me of his limitations. He locks on to the primary receiver for as long as possible, if he doesn't make the throw to the primary he always runs to his right and more often than not he throws the ball away without ever looking for a secondary receiver. He has poor pocket awareness and an even worse sense of clock management. The end of the regulation was classic Liufau as he burned way too much time with his lock on/run right/throw away predictable play that even the meathead announcer from Notre Dame Aaron Somedouch was dogging him for it. He does have decent downfield accuracy, but his slow windup throwing motion and laser lock on the primary receiver is a recipe for disaster. I absolutely expect the same QB this year as we saw last year, especially given he was "knocking off the rust" during the first couple of weeks in fall camp. There is no upside here.

RB
Adkins was on the sideline in the 1st half, riding the bike, never to be seen again. Lindsay is a good back, but not a primary RB in a P5 conference. Hopefully Lee will be an upgrade over Powell, but with Lindgren calling the plays you can be sure that the strengths of each RB will be ignored. Lindgren calls his game regardless of the players on the field rather than tailor his calls to the talents of the players on the field. The lack of depth going into the game this year is disconcerting, but no worse than last years game.

WR
Missing Spruce is going to hurt. Ross made a nice TD catch in traffic, but dropped a must-make catch early. Fields has wheels, but he is so small. If he had Richardson type wheels than the lack of size wouldn't concern me. Not sure what to think about 2015 vs 2016 here, but I expect a drop off in play at least during the first game of the year.

TE

K/P/Teams
It cannot get any worse. Period.

Coaching
I don't see any significant improvements/downgrades from last years RMS to this years game. Maybe some improvement from the defense playing better together having been in Leavitt's system for a full season. Since this is the opening game of the season, I'm not expecting the new OL/RB/WR coaches to have a significant upside impact, but possibly a downside impact. The upside could take place over the course of a season, but in the first game I don't see the coaches being a big improvement. I know we are expecting some new looks on offense, but Lindgren is still calling the plays and Liufau is still the QB; these guys are governors on the throttle.

CSU
I don't know much about them other than they are obviously a power running team. I think they will have success against CU in the run game again because CU isn't built to stop the power game, only Stanford runs it in the Pac-12 now. Unless the DL can really clog the line expect to see a lot of 5 -12 yard runs up the middle by CSU. The good news is that Hansley and Higgins are gone, no way CSU is better at WR this season.

Conclusion
****, I don't know. Thanks to Gary Barnett and Bradlee Van Pelt, CSU is now CU's rival. Rivalry games are hard to predict. First games of the season are hard to predict. Mix the rivalry with the season opener and it is too hard to conclude that CU has any major upgrade in odds this season over last. One thing that I do know with absolute certainty, if CSU fires that ****ing cannon up Bobo's ass it wouldn't be a second too soon.

Interesting. And what I know for certain is that if Lindgren really does have final say on the game plan, final say on the play design, final say on the play calling, final say on in-game management and final say on in-game adjustments then the ol coach, the rb coach, the wr coach and the Co-Oc will have minimal impact on this game and the season and it will prove that Nice guys finish last.

No excuses for Mac2. There are none. Not injuries not nothing.

Yeah I watched it again today. Tackling was a huge issue. Jordan Carrell REALLY came on at the end but he continued to miss tackles. As you stated the linebackers were terrible. It was Gamboas first start but him and KO refuse to make tackles/plays at the line of scrimmage, I would seriously rather have severson in there who is small but actually shoots gaps and reads runs. Moeller is not a backer but he killed it in run support last year.

I don't really understand what I was watching in that first quarter but that was the same flat team that came out in the Hawaii game. Painful to watch. There is no way in hell CSU should get more than 150 yards passing against us this year.

Also if leavitt sends Chido on the backside consistently again the screen game is going to be open again.

Other thing was the defense did a good job getting in third and long situations but then let up some stupid pas right at the sticks, have to fix that.

We gave them way too much cushion
Yeah Higgins wasn't the fastest guy, I have no idea why Crawley was so worried about him deep, no one on that field had his athleticism. Also really hurt when spoon got hurt and we somehow got walker one on one with Higgins outside, that can't happen.

The Notre Dame announcer at one point said that "many" NFL scouts had Higgins ranked as the #1 WR in the NFL draft. He went in the 5th round 20th WR overall out of 34 drafted.

As LT is the second most important position in CFB, having Irwin back will be a big boost, so long as he is truly in playing condition. Kronshage got better through the season, but CSU was his first start at LT.

I disagree with LT being the 2nd most important spot in CFB. NFL, maybe. In college, I actually think Center is the most important position on the OL. I don't think I've ever seen a college OL with a great Center that didn't perform above average as a whole. I have seen some dog **** OLs that had a great LT, though.

I watched a little of the Cleveland game yesterday; Higgins didn't even make it in the game until the 2nd have and stone-handed the first easy pass thrown his way. He's not even on their current 6-deep depth chart, and I'm not sure he even makes the Browns' roster.

No worm burner snaps this year please. Not one.,

YAWWWWWWN! I always love "analyses" that follow the old, "I kin tell 'zackly where that bear's goin', cuz I follered his tracks to rightchere!" system.
No accounting for changes in staff or approach; no accounting for players' personal improvements in physique, experience or mentality; no accounting for just plain maturity or even return of guys who never saw the field or loss of key players .....just the same old whiney bulls**t, I've come to expect from the usual suspect naysayers here at AB. Wake me up when these clowns get real jobs as coaches, eh?
They call it "last year" for a reason. Get over it!

You clearly didn't read it as many of your points were addressed directly or by inference.

No accounting for changes in staff or approach: Read the section on coaches, it is spelled out there.
No accounting for player improvements in physique, experience...: Read the OL/DL section. The OL is given credit for being better in 2016 in large part for having a couple of the same players, Kough and Kelley. Same for the DL.

So truth be told, you read the name of the person that posted; you didn't bother to read it (which is fine); you went into little whiny bitch mode because you felt like being a little whiny bitch. I can understand that you would have a tough time keeping a job at McDonalds because even there you can't get away with being a lazy ass, whiny little bitch.

When smoke cleared on a 4-8 season, MacIntyre began dissecting the damage. The coaching staff knew it was putting too much on the quarterback in some of those late-game moments, with plays taking too long to develop and limiting the pressure on defenses.

“Some of our play-calling in those situations, it’s about ways to get the ball in our playmakers’ hands in a little bit more,” MacIntyre said. “Also, there are certain things that we might bring out at the end of a game or in....

Some? I say most

Damn... You had me until McDonalds though, I had always figured Burger King.

If your center doesn't meet a basic level of competence then I agree, but I think that basic level is reached on most teams. After that, sure the more talented the centers the better, but you better have a solid left tackle 'cause that is where the best pass rusher is coming, and when he is coming from somewhere else the QB is still panicking about his blind side if he doesn't trust his LT.

That's why 2014 Oregon lost to lowly 2014 WSU when they lost Jake Fisher for a game. When he came back no one could beat them. That's why Nate Soldier makes bank. That is why NFL left tackles are the highest paid players on the OL....
