Defensive stats were interesting to me. Oliver started over Spoon after Spoon had the block shedding/ tackling issues vs Michigan. Talk about a guy redeeming himself.

Olugbode is not getting the credit he deserves from fans this year. He's having a great senior year at ILB.

Samson and Tupou were insane good on Saturday.

Laguda also had a hell of a bounce back game after struggling against Michigan.

Tedric drew a lot of tough, mismatch type assignments where he was asked to man cover an Oregon WR. He battled and made some plays he would not have made in previous years. He has really improved his coverage skills.

This was very much a defensive team effort, too. All levels making plays. Quiet day for Chido since Oregon was keying on him.

And since he had a tackle, I'll give a shout out to Kough in this thread. This dude is developing into an all-conference level OL. He was awesome against Michigan and I was watching him a lot Saturday. It carried forward. He's a hell of a LG.

Tackles
Olugbode - 9 (1 TFL, 1 pass breakup)
Kafovalu - 7 (1 sack)
Laguda - 7
Tupou - 7
Gamboa - 7 (1 pass breakup)
Gilbert - 5 (1 sack)
Carrell - 5 (1 sack, 1 TFL)
Witherspoon - 5 (1 INT, 1 pass breakup)
Awuzie - 4
Gillam - 4
Moeller - 3
Thompson - 3 (3 pass breakups)
Oliver - 2 (1 pass breakup)
Jackson - 2
Silzer - 1
Ross - 1
Kough - 1
Evans - 1
Huntley - 1
Lewis - 1
Ento - 1

I liked Gilbert yesterday as well. Much better job at containing the edge. I remember the game up there a couple of years ago when Marriota embarrassed him multiple times on option plays.

Olugbode looks like a different player, he's shedding OL, putting on big hits, and making plays back there.

Only complaint with Gilbert was that he wasn't fast enough to cover the rb coming out of the backfield on a receiving route, but that's not really his fault as much as it was very good play design by Oregon to create the mismatch.

No linebacker in the country can run with that RB on a wheel route. I did like his effort on the play, though. He was hustling and used his height to force a rainbow throw (dime of a pass), which kept that mismatch from turning into a big YAC play. One of those cases, I think, where we can just say that Oregon has some dudes and will make some plays.

I agree, he was in the right place and did the right things (happened more than once, it was just painfully obvious on the play we're both thinking of) - but they were also well designed plays to create the isolation mismatch in the first place.

I guess I'm saying he did a great job, but Oregon did a good job finding the one weakness in his game.

As nik said, asking him to cover a RB down the field is asking him to do something he can't do. Not his fault. He was much better as an edge defender yesterday than he was against a much bigger and physical Michigan OL. I see that being a really good thing against just about every team on our schedule sans Stanford.

I saw a formation from furd last night with 4 TEs and I backs.... on 1st and 10. We are going to need a special Jumbo package for them.

CMac on the stretch running play behind that OL is a worry for another day. Thankfully.

Oregon State with the power running concepts brought from Wisconsin will be a good prep for what we'll see against Stanford. Actually, it's also a good prep game for USC and what Helton's trying to do. Pac-12 is pretty much a running league this season. QBs are either young or not super talented passers.

Except for us. Woot.

Here's a picture of what I was talking about. Could really use DMac against this kind of thing.

KO coverage was also excellent, I was worried with their speed and our sometimes iffy tackling that could get away from us (seemed like a lot of arm tackles attempted against Peppers, maybe he wears an oily uniform?).
