How would you rate the PAC 12 as a football conference in 2016?

Compared to the other Power 5 conferences I was trying figure where the PAC 12 rated. Other than Washington - the conference does not seem to have much power at the top. I would say the PAC 12 is probably more balanced than the other conferences - the bottom of the PAC12 is probably Oregon State and Arizona and they are better teams than the bottom of most the other conferences (Rutgers, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Syracuse, Illinois, Iowa State and Kansas).

But teams I thought would be good at the beginning of the season have been exposed in the last several games.

Stanford seems to have lost their mojo and no longer dominates the line of scrimmage - whats up with that. It will be a challenge for Shaw to get them regrouped

Oregon - this team seems to get worse every game.

UCLA - cannot run the ball and cannot protect the passer. They have regressed since playing A&M tough.

The rest of the league just seems to upset each other week to week - How did Oregon State beat Cal???

Anyway after some thought (non-scientific) I put the PAC 12 at number 4 mostly because teams are not getting better as the season goes on. Here are my rankings -

1. SEC - Hate them are not - they take their football serious in the SEC. The top of the conference with Alabama, A&M, Mississippi, to name a few are pretty salty teams. The West division looks to be really tough.

2. ACC - I give the ACC the nod here because Clemson seems to be getting stronger and I am really impressed with Louisville. The ACC seems to have a lot of strength at the top and balance in the middle. Still cannot figure out Florida State- Jimbo Fisher may have made the right adjustments.

3. Big 10 - Strong at the Top and really bad at the bottom. But they have a lot of teams at the top (Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin) so they get the nod - Michigan State is not having a good year and I am not convinced that Nebraska is for real.

4. PAC 12 - Already discussed. Washington and then a cast of thousands.

5. Big 12 - not much at the top Oklahoma got smacked by Houston.- Baylor is probably the best team in the conference but I doubt they go undefeated. West Virginia has not played anyone. The middle and the bottom are not very good. Texas has plummeted and KSU and TT are both below average.

I would say the Pac-12 is a good football conference.

We seem to only have one elite team, but we don't really have any garbage teams (yes I know the state of Oregon is trying their best to counter my argument)

I think the lack of more heavy weights will really drag down perception this year. UW is going to have to go undefeated to make it to the playoffs.

Just pointing out: The Pac12 has less **** at the bottom than anyone. A whole lot of mediocre to pretty good.

The B1G has a whole group of some truly godawful in Purdue, Rutgers, Illinois & others.

I think you nailed it. I also won't be surprized if, at season's end, the rank is:
1. B1G
2. ACC
3. SEC

It is weird how so much of a conference's prestige is purely based on how many teams are in the Top 10-15. I do believe Washington is a step down from Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State, but I would comfortably put them against any other teams nationally. I would also put the bottom 33% of the Pac 12 right now (that would be Oregon, UCLA, Arizona, and Oregon State) against the bottom 50% of all the conferences and call it a draw.

Does that make the Pac 12 better? Not necessarily. But it doesn't make them worse, either.

The PAC 12 to me appears to have one elite team - Washington, 2 teams that could be elite if they got their heads screwed on right (USC & Stanford), 8 teams that are pretty good but have holes in their games that can get exposed (CU, UU, ASU, UCLA, Cal, UO, UA, WSU), and one dog poop team (OSU).

A few of those 8 middle teams won't make bowl games, just due to the fact that they can't all win the required six games.

I think the Holiday Bowl and maybe even the Rose Bowl will have a mediocre team from the PAC 12 this year.

Holiday Bowl would be cool, love that one. I'd rather it be a Texas or Arizona Bowl, easier circumstances for me. We have ties to the Sun Bowl by chance?

Bowl tie-ins:

Pac-12

The Pac-12 gets a team in the Rose Bowl. It’s the Pac-12 Champion if it’s not in the College Football Playoff.

1. Rose Bowl (New Year’s Six)
2. Valero Alamo Bowl vs. Big 12
3. National University Holiday Bowl vs. Big Ten
4. Foster Farms Bowl vs. Big Ten
5. Hyundai Sun Bowl vs. ACC
6. Las Vegas Bowl vs. Mountain West
7. Motel 6 Cactus Bowl vs. Big 12

I'd be cool with a few of those, thank you for that. One question, where the hell is the Foster Farms Bowl?

Depends on how you flesh this out. I'm guessing that if you pitted Pac-12 teams ranked 1-12 against SEC, ACC or B1G teams ranked 1-14 (excluding teams ranked 7 and 8 to even the numbers), the Pac-12 would do well. There are good arguments that two average to above average Pac-12 teams (us and Oregon) should've beaten the two teams at the top of the B1G standings (Michigan and Nebraska) on the road. The problem is that the majority of Pac-12 teams, including whoever the second best team is, fall somewhere between the twentieth and forty-fifth best teams in the country (UCLA, USC, Utah, CU, Stanford, ASU, WSU, Cal?, Oregon?). And almost everyone has demonstrated an almost uncanny ability to crap the bed against an inferior opponent. Washington is the only elite team, and they very nearly choked away a game at Arizona. So the Pac-12 is...middle-heavy? Why? Because the coaching in this conference is dog****. Mora, Helton and Graham are terrible and Rich Rod has retired to Tucson.

LOL @Uncle Ken

It really depends on how you judge the conferences. If you judge them on strength at the top, it has to go SEC, B1G, ACC, Pac 12, Big 12.

If you are looking at top to bottom, I'd switch it to SEC, Pac 12, B1G, ACC and Big 12 bringing up the rear again. There are some real dog**** teams in most conferences, the Pac 12 is surprisingly low on them this year (we've helped in that regard, undoubtedly).

The Big 12 sucks.

Beyond that, the other conferences are interchangeable. SEC continues to be propped up by Alabama's dominance.

No matter how you slice it, the Big XII sucks.

I hate the PC12 because we are the best conference that looks like the worst conference.

WSU always loses to an FCS school and then becomes a world-beater during October...leading those AP voters who obey the transitive property of football to believe that portland state could beat most of the pac12.

Schools like USC,will look like **** in OOC play and then put all the pieces together mid-season to become, basically, unbeatable. Then their five star players, disappointed that they aren't playing the NC game after going 8-3, will smoke so much crack before their bowl game that they lose to like Nevada or something.

There is so much parity in the south that we will beat the **** out of each other, with no hope for a high bowl and with enough injuries to prevent a bowl victory over some mountain west team.

The ACC sucks. Their bottom half is crazy weak. Louisville is over-rated and Clemson probably is too. CU would be competing for an ACC championship this year...no ****.

Texas and the Big12 are working double time to rebuild the SWAC. Need I say more.

The Big10 are smug sons of bitches who use football to mitigate the bleak reality that their daddy's factory is relocating to China.

The SEC is the best conference no doubt, but I would rather suck than be in the SEC.

But as I've so often pointed out. The SEC is a good football conference, and frequently the best football conference. But it is ALWAYS an overrated football conference.

As Duff pointed out, the only thing giving that conference real credibility (outside the usual hype) this year is ****ing Alabama is for real.

The SEC is a good football conference and given their success they are bound to be over-hyped...but for real now...would you want to be in the SEC?

My answer has nothing to do with the quality of play.

Parity is starting to creep on in to college football. There are maybe five teams that have a legit chance to win it all. After that, there are 60 or so teams that could beat anybody.

Pac-12 doesn't have great QBs this year. Especially not great + veteran. Big advantage for programs like WSU and CU. Washington has a great young QB who is playing like a vet. But what this adds up to is that most teams are absolute **** on the road.

To me it's Alabama and everybody else. They aren't unbeatable but some team would have to play damn near perfect. Even if they dropped a game, they'd still get in the playoff. Agree on the parity and Pac 12 comments as well.

This is right. The last couple weekends I have often thought that PAC-12 football is turning into PAC-12 basketball - road victories are difficult and at a premium. We are set up pretty well down the stretch. All of the remaining South teams at home except for UA, likely the worst of the bunch.

Why isn't there a bowl tie in that gets Pac 12 vs SEC? Outside of the Playoff, we rarely get to see those matchups. I'd be interested to see how CU matches up with an SEC team with a similar record like South Carolina, UGA, UK, Arkansas or even Auburn.

Because they don't want to play any games outside their geographical footprint. Only time they do it is either Texas or its a BCS (now playoff) bowl.

I give Ohio State the edge. Pretty similar. Give me the senior QB over the true frosh in the big game.

I'd love to see us play Arky. Auburn hmmmm. The question, no clue. It's happened in the past but then again, the bowls have changed over the years.
