Getting ready to head back to Iowa after our first game day experience in Boulder.

First thanks to all those who provided suggestions in an earlier thread. Big help. Not all message boards are as courteous or helpful.

Got an awesome hotel in Westminster after arriving at about 6:00 am on Saturday. Caught a few hours sleep, then to Boulder. Got a great meal at the Dark Horse before making our way to campus. Atmosphere was a lot different than I expected but we absolutely loved it. What a beautiful setting and campus. People were very helpful with questions we had as we walked around. Facilities are fantastic.

CU band was fun to watch. Ralphie run, very cool. Buffs were fun to watch, crowd very active.

We've been to games at a lot of venues the past two years, this ranks very very high.

Thanks again, Go Buffs.

I'd love to know more about your experience when you get the time. What positively surprised you; anything negative about the trip? What was different about the atmosphere from your expectations, and what WERE your expectations?

We had one CU jackass sitting in our section that I could have done without. What a boor.

Was it the guy who stood up and yelled at Kalen Ballage that he picked the wrong school? That guy was a weirdo.

Biggest positive, and surprise in my mind was the relaxed atmosphere around the stadium. No huge parking lots of tailgaters right up to stadium entrance. We did not see a great deal of loud obnoxious drunkeness either.

Obviously the scenery is so much better than most other stadiums. Traffic was not bad at all, but we pulled into parking about 1:00, we noticed it got heavier towards game time. Crowd was a bit later arriving than we normally see into stadium but we attributed that to homecoming.

Just truly enjoyed the lack of pedestrian as well as vehicle traffic. Plus the uptempo was a blast to watch.

Was that a typical crowd?

Part of the deal with tailgating is that it is split up into a bunch of smaller lots all around campus. I think that is what helps keep it feeling intimate in a way.

That crowd was what CU used to expect. It hasn't been that way in a long long time. You picked a great night for your first CU game.

Somebody admitted this in the game thread lol
We were so close to the ASU players. There were (on CUBuffs.com) a large group of unsold tickets there so I snuck down to them. Then were joined by many drunk students that were mostly being funny with the lame insults "You guys are the University Of Phoenix's bastard football team! Phoenix is like a dumpy Tijuana! ASU uses the metric system!!" Some funny and some lame insults that had the ASU players laughing at them. When Wilkins threw the INT (while admittedly getting his chest caved in by AG) he was right in front of us slapping his chest yelling "That ones on me guys! That was my mistake!"

A student pipes up "Hell yeah it was!! That was horrible!!! All you!!" Everyone was cracking up and even Manny shot a look and a half smile at the CU student.

But yeah, I razzed Ballage a bit about picking the wrong team to play for. We also had a USC fan that would run back and forth jokingly waving his ball cap to rub in the USC loss. But must be a regular as it wasn't mean spirited and was well familiar and liked by plenty of CU and ASU fans.

Was a friggen fun game.

Amazing!! That's how sports should be! I'm the type to talk **** and razzle players too. I remember a few years ago I was at coors field for an Arizona game. Anyways, in 2007 playoffs for the Rockies they had a guy everyone hated, burns maybe? I sat there with my friends and i talked **** to that guy forever and the whole section was laughing and jumped in. later in the game he dropped a fly ball and we all laughed so hard he turned and gave us the dirtiest look. Lol it was amazing! I'm usually the loudest one, don't sit, chant starter. 2013 I take pride that at the broncos AFC CHAMPIONSHIP game with 2-3 minutes remaining I started the Super Bowl chant and everyone joined in. That was ****ing sweet.

Going with the threadjack, I was at a Zephyrs game in Mile High a couple of decades ago (I ****ing loved Zephyrs games when I was in college, so much so that I voted against the tax to fund Coors Field) and my friends and I were ****faced and couldn't figure out what it said on the umps' hat. It wasn't NL or AL. So we were yelling at the ump to come over so we could see his hat. The Zephyrs catcher (who later made the big leagues but I can't recall his name, pretty sure he played for the Mets for a season or two) was walking back from warming up a pitcher and told us to calm down. We spent the rest of night (and the season) mercilessly trash talking that guy.

Typical crowd from now on I hope. The place used to rock and roll regularly, not so much of late.

I'm always a sucker for real stories from real people (often with fake screen names) about football roadies.

One of the tougher realities of being a CU fan is the geographical isolation to opponent's campuses. CSU is close enough, but that game is played in an NFL stadium far from campus. The net result is a relatively small contingent of season ticket holders and students who road-trip and explore other campuses. The nearest road trip CU has on the schedule this season is Tucson, which is more than 900 miles away. Road trip usually means airplane flight. This means rental cars, hotel stays, and bar food, not RVs, BBQ smokers, and maurading student sections.

In my opinion, the isolation means lots of CU fans don't have the urge to be good hosts. It's easier to welcome a visitor in Boulder after you've been served a few beers and friendly banter on somebody else's campus.

This is more of an observation than a complaint. With such a beautiful setting and great weather from Sept to late Oct, an intimate venue, an iconic mascot, a hansom campus inside a quintessential college town with first class bars and dining, it's easy for CU fans to hold the belief that there is no better place to be when the football team is rolling.

What you saw is called Folsom Magic.

It takes a few tries and tweaks to optimize the Boulder experience. A stay at Hotel Boulderado or the St Julien, a trip to the roof top for a fireside drink, catching the Stampede on Pearl, a pizza at the Sink, a burger at The Dark Horse, a hike in Chautauqua near the Flatirons when wild raspberries are there for the taking, catching trout with a fly rod up the canyon on Boulder creek, watching a future heisman trophy winner pick up 2000 yards rushing, rushing the field, enjoying the band play on Farrand Field, catching up with old friends at the Sackygate, touring the new facilities, throwing a ball around on Franklin Field. Paying tribute to Junction's legacy brick on the Buff Walk, getting access under the stadium for a halftime beer with an insider, throwing oranges on the field, cup fights, snow games, and the list of game day memories at Folsom is the stuff that makes a life well-lived.

Sure college fans can have this level of emotional life-long bonds on any campus. And, sure, fans of other schools have been spoiled with a lot more wins over the past ten years. There are campuses with more storied rivalries, some incredible BBQ pits, tailgate scenes with live bands, celebrities, bigger and more passionate student sections.

But when Folsom and Boulder is at its best, it's hard to match anywhere.

Are you employed by the school? Lol. I can't wait for UCLA, I've been waiting all year to finally get back in the action.

so glad to hear you enjoyed yourself!

there are lots of good schools and programs and beautiful locations--- i am sure you've seen many of them. we are, as you can expect, incredibly proud of our school and our program, and the town, and the new facilities. most of the long time posters on this site have seen it all... from playing for and winning the national championship, through the down years, the rebuild, and now the rise. this is going to be a really special time for CU football. i intend to enjoy every minute of it.

Folsom on Saturdays has been a tradition my entire life. My pops graduated in 69 and he's had season tickets since. Since the time I could walk, I was going to games with my gramps, dad and brother. Being an impressionable kid during our glory years, I just thought that is how college football was done. I remember Sal's farewell game, the Hagen to Bieniemy option, beating Stanford in 1990 and oranges being hurled on the field to expecting magic every time Rashaan touched to ball. I attended CU during 62-36 and there were even some special moments after that. Growing up in Colorado and "Bronco Country", the Buffs have always been and will continue to be the only team I live and die with each week. I get tired of hearing about the Broncos year round. Every year since our fall from grace, I would still drink the kool aid in August, hoping this would be the year we return to form. Last night I attended the game with my dad, buddy and my four year old daughter and it was undeniable that the magic is back! Seeing my daughter go crazy with the energy in Folsom, cheering and giving out high fives to fans each time we scored, stomping her feet on big 3rd downs is an instant memory I will never forget. I now believe I can carry on the tradition my dad started for my brother and me with my kids and they will have the same opportunity to grow up with the magic back in Boulder. Colorado football was the way I bonded with my dad as a kid and knowing I will share that same bond with my kids and they will look back and say they were a part of the rise and remember some of these new magic moments is beyond words. Sorry for the tl;dr but life is great right now! I'm so proud to be a Buff and feel even better my kids will bleed the same black and gold as me. Go Buffs!!!

Yes the USC guy is usually there.
