So many key seniors ...

This is shaping up to be a special season, and really hoping we strike while the iron is hot. We lose our entire DL, 2 of 3 LBs and 3 out of 4 in the secondary next year: Carrell, Tupou, Kafovalu, Olugbode, Gilbert, Witherspoon, Awuzie, Thompson. When you watch games, those guys are making 95% of the big defensive plays for us.

For you guys who follow the program more closely, how are we feeling about next year on D? Looking at the depth chart, a lot of those #2 guys I haven't seen on the field at all.

Not worried about next year.

Enjoy what is happening now. Enjoy the ride. Plenty of time to worry about next season once this one is over.

I'm not worried, definitely enjoying this ride more than I have since maybe the late 90s ... I was just looking at the depth chart and all those "SR" by kids names kinda made me shudder a bit. Its a little unusual to see that many seniors starting.

And I realize that a great season now helps immensely in recruiting, so we can replace all those seniors with raw talent. So yeah, I'm fired up!

Really what it comes down to is they need to find at least 1 JUCO contributor at DB and DL (NT). If they do that we should be fine.

I have fretted and worried long enough. To long to remember. Now it is time to

The Defense is going to take a step back, but the offense might take another step forward.
Montez, Bobo, Fields, Ross, Lindsay, 4 of 5 Offense linemen all return.
8/11 starters returning if you don't count Montez

Lotta young talent in the defensive backfield and at LB

DL could use a transfer for sure.

The young guys have all had a few years in the program and should, theoretically, be able to step in without missing a beat next year.

I'm not concerned. There is talent here just waiting for its chance to play.

Exhibit A: Steven Montez. If Apsay had still been here, Montez wouldn't have seen the field. Now we know we have a gamer at QB for the next three years. I have every confidence that we also have gamers at the other positions.

Passing game is going to be explosive next year, IMO. Fields, Bobo and Ross is an awesome group.

I feel we match up pretty good against Stanford. That's all that matters right now.

With this attitude, how is anyone expected to effectively talk smack to opposing fans that percieve this season as some kind of anomaly?

It's key to have all our reasons lined out that makes a case CU is reloading, and not expected to fall back in the P12 basement next year.

Exactly my point ... if you look at what Mac did at SJSU, he had a great senior class for that 11-2 year, and the program has pretty much tanked since then. My hope is that while we're riding these seniors to a (hopefully) glorious season, we're also aggressively grooming the guys behind them and identifying high level talent to take over. I could certainly see Leavitt leaving for a HC job after this year, so that makes it even harder. As good as the offense has been, the difference maker for us this year IMO has been the defense.

It's impossible to build something that lasts at SJSU, you're not supposed to be able to win there. The year after he left, they rode completely off their remaining talent and managed six wins with a tough OOC and a 3OT loss to Navy and also upset 10-0 Fresno State (the team who beat us 69-14 the year prior). They also somehow won a bowl game in 2015. Considering the history of SJSU, he certainly left his mark on that program. Their new staff just never built off it and they didn't truly tank until this season.

Also SJSU Mac is totally different from CU Mac, he never recruited well at SJSU, he just developed hidden gems and once he had a veteran team, it succeeded. His staff is much much stronger here, Leavitt or not, and difference is he's recruiting very well here now and he'll be here to continue to develop the players.

Geez, save the 2017 gloom and doom for next year
It's not doom and gloom. Legit football fans can enjoy the current season AND look ahead. They're not mutually exclusive. I'd like to think this program is coming back to sustained success, rather than one senior-heavy team making a bowl and then bam, back to the cellar. I don't in any way think that's the case, but its worth getting people's perspectives on it. I don't follow recruiting as much as many of the guys on this board.

Lots of key seniors, but the staff has managed to turn the culture of this program around, a feat that I was starting to believe was unpossible. To me, that reversal is the key going forward. We might not make a big jump forward next year, but I would be surprised if we win less than seven or eight games. Folsom Field is going to become a damn near impossible place for visiting teams to win (if it isn't already).

I posted this about a month ago in a different thread; I think it's on point here, and I don't want to redo the numbers:

A lot of "how much older/younger is the team now and is it going to get next year" is masked with the stat "X number of juniors and seniors." A lot of the time (and is true in this case), red-shirt sophomores are included in that stat line - even though many of them will still be playing in 3 years (three years on campus (juniors), but one year redshirting (RS Soph).

If you're evaluating the current team in terms of age and experience, the number of juniors and seniors is a good line to use.

If you're evaluating how much of a drop off in age and experience the team is going to experience in the following two seasons, it's better to use something like "how many players will run out eligibility in the next two seasons?"

For these numbers I'm only using scholarship players who were on the roster at the start of fall camp (it was the roster I could find in the easiest format to sort and count).

This year, we have 53 Juniors and Seniors (older and experienced, yay!)
We will have 41 players running out of eligibility at the end of 2017.
In 2017, we will have 50 Juniors and Seniors (again, older and experienced, yay!)
In 2017, we will have 39 players running out of eligibility at the end of 2018.
In 2018, we will have 42 Juniors and Seniors (younger, but still half the roster is "upperclassmen")
In 2018, we will have 35 players running out of eligibility at the end of 2019.

The above numbers assume that we don't sign any JC or other transfers, which we will likely have, and that will make the numbers even better.

This is what proper class balance looks like in a P5 program, and it is truly a huge (and unheralded) success of HCMM to get us to this point in only 4 seasons. Unless we get a glut of guys leaving early for the NFL draft (a good problem to have) or a glut of injuries in one class (bad problem to have), at least half the roster should always be made up of guys who are in at least their 3rd year of college, i.e. "juniors" and older.

so you'll be saving your doom and gloom for basketball season then, yeah?

Yep worry about here and now. We'll be younger next season but so what. Finish recruiting strong and no worries.

Read an ASU blog. The claim is that Mac sacrificed wins to play freshmen and sophs who are now jr's and sr's. The writer's argument is that we will return to being bottom feeders because we haven't recruited well and aren't developing the underclassmen. It came across as wishful thinking to me. Plus it failed to mention/realize that we are recruiting lights out this year. Also, last year's class was mainly rated lower due to numbers.
