CUBuffs.com: Buffs Start 2017 Season With Trip To Oklahoma (Volleyball- 3 matches total Friday-Sat.)

BOULDER—Colorado will kick off the 2017 season at the NIKE Invitational, facing Northwestern State, Seton Hall and former Big 8/12 rival Oklahoma, August 25-26, in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Buffs, who return 12 letterwinners from a 2016 squad that finished 14-16 overall, will start the tournament on August 25 against Northwestern State at 3:30 p.m. MT. Colorado will be back in action on August 26 with a pair of matches. CU will start the day at 9 a.m. with a meeting against Seton Hall before facing Oklahoma at 6 p.m. in the final contest of the tournament.

Live stats will be provided at soonersports.com, as well as CUBuffs.com. CU's match versus OU will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma (check your local listings to see if it is available in your area) and an audio stream is available on soonersports.com.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Buffs will open the home slate next weekend, hosting the Omni Invitational Sept. 1-3, at Coors Events Center. While CU will not play on Sept. 1, there will be a pair of matches contested. Rice and Wake Forest will start things off at 10 a.m. on Sept. 1 and at 5 p.m., WFU will be back in action against Abilene Christian.

The invitational will start back up on Sept. 2 at 10 a.m. with a tilt between Rice and Abilene Christian and at 1 p.m., the Buffs will take the court against Wake Forest. CU will play again at 7 p.m. The final match of the invitational will be played Sept. 3. The Buffs will host Abilene Christian at 11 a.m.

Best wishes to the vball team as they start their season!

Looks like, just based on their opponents' RPI's LAST season (per http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi , Northwestern State ended up #247, Seton Hall #140 and Oklahoma #109), this might end up being the Buffs easiest tournament of the off-season. However, with having to integrate in new libero(s), defensive specialist(s) and, most importantly, setter(s), AND having quite a few injuries going into the season on the offensive side (4 of the Buff's hitters didn't suit up for last weekend's Black and Gold scrimmage), believe the Buffs will still need to bring their best to start the season strong.

(LAST season, with Gabby Simpson out injured, the Buffs suffered in week one what could have turned out to be a major if not THE loss that kept them from the NCAA tournament when they traveled up to and lost to Portland State (although they ended up with a not horrible #143 RPI) at their tournament. Hopefully history won't repeat itself. (Although, with all the new pieces having to be integrated and current injuries, assume the Buffs may have some rough patches early in the season, but the team should look MUCH better as the season progresses.))

I checked with Dish and if I add sports multi pack, I still would not get Fox Sports Oklahoma, so I didn't add it.

For he positions that had ?'s, Looks like Shebby is getting the OH2 position start, Deluzio at setteer and Berta at libero

Agree about that second set. The other three sets were the kind of scores I expected to see -14, -17, -15. Congrats on the win ladies!
 
Buffs get the 1st set 25-22.

Looks like they had a decent lead (15-9), but in the wild roller coaster momentum constantly changing game of vball the lead went away before the Buffs scored the last 3 points (with Anna Pfefferle serving).

Note on what the lineup looks like

RS - Hayes (Whipple setting and playing back row rotations)*
L- Berta
* Looks like the Buffs are also playing some occasional situational 6-2, with Joachim coming in for Deluzio in a front row rotation or two and Demure coming in for Hayes (or Whipple) for a rotation or so.

It's 19-15 Buffs in the 2nd set.
 
And the Buffs get the 2nd set 25-18, with the Buff Block party coming on strong, with 6 for the set and ~5 of the Buff's last 11 points (and 3 in a row) coming from the block.

A few random notes (just based on stats, so who really knows if they really mean anything)-
1) Looks like a VERY efficient match offensively for the Buffs and freshman setter Deluzio. She had nearly as many assists this morning (41) in 3 sets as she did last evening in 4 sets (43). Obviously competition will pick up A LOT as the season goes on but just for reference- her assists per set stat this morning was 13.67. Last season, Washington's setter Tanner lead the Pac 12 in that stat (and was voted 2nd team All-American), and she averaged 10.92 assists/ set.
2) So far, the outside (left-side) hitters are getting LOTS of work. Understandable given a new setter and having to get her connection going with what is usually the "bread and butter" connection in volleyball, but hopefully they'll be more diversity (namely- to the middle blockers and rightside hitter (Hayes)) as the season progresses.
3) In the 3rd set, the major line-up change was to get G. Carta-Samuels some work as the libero for the 1st time this season, and looks like she had a nice stat-line- 6 digs, 1 ace, etc.. Great to have her get some experience.
 
Short, efficient match win is especially good with another match against Oklahoma tonight. Despite 2 matches already played in the same 24 hour period, the Buffs should have dead legs.
 
Oklahoma quickly dispatched Northwestern State a bit ago (Stats- (http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=180961) ), so Buffs better bring their "A Game". Interestingly, for a sweep, the hitting % wasn't that different (.231 to .212). However, the Buffs may get a nice test of their serve receive this evening, as Oklahoma had a big advantage in aces this afternoon (9 to 1).
 
Looks like it's going to be a fight- after easily winning the 1st 25-11, the Buffs lost a tight 23-25 2nd set.
 
And the Buffs finish it off convincingly 25-14 in the 4th. Nice 3-0 start to the season as the team gets more time together!
 
Wow! Didn't expect to win this tourney. Thought that they had over-scheduled this year. Great sign for the potential of this year's squad.
 
Don't know where Washington is ranked this year, but I watched Creighton beat them in Washington last night.

Nebraska has play two matches so far this season. Lost two matches two lower ranked teams.

Assume you mean Ms. Deluzio? If that's the case- Yes.

"...Brynna Ann Deluzio was born on April 28, 1999 in Windermere, Fla. She is the daughter of Donald and Sheri Deluzio. She is the third youngest of nine kids (not all blood-related). Her father played football at CU...."

(When I 1st found out about Ms. Deluzio being a Buff commit July 2016 (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/recruiting-news-olympic-sports.101643/page-8#post-2016351), found a nice human interest story (http://www.espn.com/ncw/columns/story?columnist=voepel_mechelle&id=4903222) from 2010 on their family which, among other things, indicates her mom was also a Buff (???), or at minimum they met in Colorado.)
