Realistic Analysis of Class

We took 4 DL as frosh, which seems desperate. Sami and Finau are RS Frosh. We don't need 4 in one class. Assume at least 1 will play this year and be in same class as Sami and Finau.

I wouldn't be surprised if Williams or Simon get some reps on the OL

L.J. Wallace is a RS Frosh at CB.

At OLB: Don't forget Gustav, who is a greyshirt Freshman is basically in the same class as Pell. Also Ray Robinson is a RS Freshman who is a "Buff Backer" mold type of OLB/S

Given that we don't really know the details of the defensive scheme it is hard to say where there is a "shortage" or "overage" in the front 7.

For all we know Finau might stand up as an OLB.
Wallace is a JR. Played one year Juco in '16, RS in '17,

I expect the D scheme to be very similar based on things Mel has said.

I think you are right, but probably not right away. I see them having a full on competition on the DL and perhaps moving one of those guys to OL in the end. Those numbers will probably work themselves out. Let's hope they are all competitive rather than 4 year dead weight carries.

That's what I was thinking as well....and I believe HCMT's mentality is 'you can't have too many big bodies'

I am hoping this practice is eliminated. Every coach makes mistakes in recruiting, and keeping those mistakes around prevents younger, hungrier and potentially better talent from coming in to the program. Although the practice may be harsh, if a guy proves to be short on talent, or work ethic, or both after a year or two it is time for player to go somewhere else.

.

No. LJ Wallace will be a redshirt freshman. He never played juco.

Yes, Wallace is a RS Frosh. But he's listed at Safety, now according to 247's new look at post-signing day roster, which Adam mentions is based on a handout that was given at last weeks presser. I read "Kevin George" not Wallace. Kevin George is still listed at CB, and is the one who RS in '17 after a year of Juco.

How big is L.J. Wallace?
247's recruiting profile had him at 6'3" 185.
The 2018 roster had him at 6'1" 190.
CUs signing class roster had him at same.
CUs 2019 roster has him at 6'4" 200.
Yeah I was confused too.

I know they list him at safety, which at 6'4 200 is probably more realistic; but his agility, recovery speed, and coverage skills point to corner. At one point during his recruitment he said: "They recruited me as a corner" but of course that was the previous staff.

Yeah will be interesting to see how they sort out those DBs. I always thought George made a better Free Safety and LJ Wallace a better corner. Pretty sure that was where they were recruited. But of course everything changes when they got in the program and when a new staff takes over.

I'm thinking Finau is gonna be around 280 this year. Don't think he runs well enough to play LB.

My take away so far with recruiting from this staff is the offer lists of 20 & 21 recruits is impressive. Tucker wants to compete at the highest levels and I'm loving it!

Per ncaa rules, scholarships are guaranteed for four years.

Well there must be some way around that. I know Alabama has a lot of early entries to the nfl, but are they keeping guys who don't contribute? Encourage to transfer or forced "injury" retirement? Not advocating being mean, but reality is there are always going to be a couple/few guys that would be better for both parties to move on.

Does the guarantee rule say they have to be on the team and count against the 85 or just school paid for?

I'm like 99% sure they are not guaranteed for 4 years. Someone more knowledgeable than I can probably confirm but I think scholarships are technically 1 year agreements that are "renewed" every year. You won't really hear of a school not "renewing" the scholly because that's a horrible look but coaches certainly encourage guys to look elsewhere by saying they won't play much at all or they recruited over them.

Not anymore. Scholarships are now 4 year agreements, at any Power 5 school, as of 2015. Scholarships can only be cancelled for non-athletic reasons, ie losing eligibility.

Interesting I didn't know that thank you. That's a much better deal for the student-athlete I'm glad they changed it.

It is basically an unenforceable rule though and sounds tougher than it is. Teams still encourage many players to move on every year.

Scholarship agreements are legal contracts and are very enforceable in the courts. Telling a kid he isn’t gonna get playing time and encouraging him to move on is not the same thing as dropping a kid because he isn’t good enough.

It certainly is a better deal, especially with the turnover in the coaching ranks. Running guys off because they don’t fit the new system is immoral as long as players aren’t getting paid.

Did you think Duff was suggesting that teams drop kids without their official consent/agreement?

If that makes you feel better.

I am suggesting that it happens all the time, and that we should be doing it too. I am not sure how the logistics work, but when Kid A comes into the program, and within a year proves to be there for nothing more than the good view, many programs get Kid A out of the program. I have never heard of any legal or court challenge regarding the 4 year guarantee, so I am presuming that school could tell Kid A he is no longer on the team, but he will maintain his scholarship (in some other form or fashion that a scholarship that counts against the 85). The system of chopping the fat on the bottom end of the roster is an ugly part of program building, but it is a necessary part of it. Quite honestly as we sit at 92 scholarships, it would seem that outside of a guy not qualifying, or some other unforeseen situation, a few guys will be getting noticed this spring.

That was my initial question, how does that process unfold sans player saying he wants to leave for a better opportunity?
