***OFFICIAL 2019 CU FOOTBALL FALL CAMP THREAD***

I see it differently a bit.

Base Run: yes, but two safeties, no Star

Base D (nickel): 3 DL, 2 ILB, 2 CB, 2 S, Star

Base Pass (dime): 2 DT wide, 2 rush OLB (1 drop on certain situations), 2 CB, 2 S, 1 ILB, 1 Money

Basing this on Kirby 3-4 article, Spring game, camp open practice and lingo used by Summers.
Base D run do you have Taylor as the other safety? Then I am guessing in the base D nickel you have Maddox/Perry coming in for the other safety and moving Taylor to Star?

Edit: Dime has a slot CB as well. It was Blackmon at the open practice with Miller and Slim outside. This was before Luckett and Thomas moves over.

There has to be a damn good spotter in the booth to alert the sideline on which personnel groupings should be on the field. Then there are rotations within groupings.

Lots of moving parts.

Taylor was not the other S in the Base Run D at the open practice. Doesn’t mean he won’t be vs CSU.

It’s a good option as long as he doesn’t get beat deep. If he is the other S in Base Run D, that means he has to learn 3 positions. In my opinion, he’s not ready. As I mentioned, Mel worked directly with him at the open practice in Base D playing the Star. They worked on simple stuff like stance, alignment as assignment. Reports are that he has come a long way since then, but he was lost that day, honestly.

Asking him to play 3 different positions... I don’t know.

Personally, I’d play Maddox and Onu in Base Run D. Have Maddox read OG as traditional S and let him be a missile
supporting the run. He’ll knock your ass off.

Taylor played Money in the dime at the open practice. It’s a deep ILB/short safety with responsibilities for the TE or RB out of the backfield. That lets Landman (yes, he will play on third down this year) be a free ILB/underneath S. It’s like the Kam Chancellor underneath position at Seattle back in the day. He is going to have some opportunities for monster hits (and targeting) for passes over the middle this year.

This is a real 3-4. None of that buffbacker crap. This is how the big boys do it.

But if there is no Buff Backer, how do you pitch half your defensive recruits on one position?

Interesting and good stuff! As I mentioned before, I can see where the issues with depth at safety is becoming more of a concern. It seems this defense requires almost 4 safeties playing throughout the game in base/nickel D.

"Can't even think about CSU"?? Huh?? They are a little over a week out from game day. They absolutely should be thinking about CSU, and hopefully the coaches have most of their game plan done. Come on, Gary.

I like Barnett and think he is a good coach, but the CSU comment makes me think about his slow starts. Maybe there really was a reason for them. Didn’t know how to get the kids ready for game 1

Sheesh! Why does everybody here,long-timers included, seem to believe that this bunch is the only team that suffers injuries, banged-up players, lacks "depth" (when what they really mean is "experienced subs")....and on and on? I can see that attitude in stoopid, lazy journo types, but c'mon!

Every team the Buffs face is gonna have the same problems as us. Nobody hits the field with 22 perfectly healthy, junior-level 4-star athletes on either side of the ball, every single week! (Okay, Clemson and the Tide excepted---maybe)

Hoping we run with 11 on defense this year. If we only have 10 to go with then depth really is scary.

There have probably been many posts on this subject - but, if so, I missed them. Is coach going to wear that hat during games? Hoping not.
