I've been pondering the upcoming NFL draft and wondered what other people think about the subject.
Specifically, I've been looking at the Broncos needs and wondering how this crop matches up with them.
Here are some suggested topics for discussion -- (1.) WHAT ARE THE BRONCOS' POSITIONAL NEEDS?
My answer: DT, LB, OT, S and WR.
[DT] - My impression is that Dorsey (LSU) and Ellis (USC) are going to be long gone (obviously) by the 12th pick and it's too high for Balmer (UNC) at 12. There are a number of suitable picks in the 2nd and 3rd round and I'd be happy to see the Broncos pick a DT at that point. Some of those possibles; Laws (ND), Bryant(T A&M), Sims (Au), Moore (Md).
I still see a high probability of the Jets' Robertson coming in a trade.
[LB] - Rivers is possible at 12 but he's an OLB. Mayo's stock is rising but he's a stretch at 12 and should be long gone by their 2nd (11/42 overall). Some of the ILBs are late 1st/early 2nd material (Conner - PS, Goff - Vblt) and I see the Broncos using a pick on LB even if it's on an OLB, since there are number of 2nd rd. caliber athletes here.
[OT] -- This looks like a likely, merely because there's number of OTs available at 12. I don't like the idea that much, even though LT is a crucial position. I'd just as soon see them trade up or down and use their 1st to fill DT or move down for more picks. This draft appears to have a number of lesser of lesser regarded prospects that what fit the Broncos needs (more is better, if they're early enough, i.e., 2-3rd).
[WR] -- It's an area that has need, with Walker gone and Marshall's misdeeds. There are a number of fairly good players in the 2nd and below range that could be picked and I don't think they'll be using their 1st here, although the 2nd pick is appropriate if a number of the WRs drop lower. I don't expect them to push it, so they'll pick a WR if the highest player available is a WR.
-- Not much in the first round, and they've addressed their needs somewhat in free agency. Whether they pick one high will depend on the draft. There's a lot available later, and it would hardly a surprise if they pick one late. CB is stronger in this draft.
OTHER STRANGE POSSIBILITIES -- a RB, such as Mendenhall (Ill) or Stewert (Or), appear set to go around 12, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them pick one at 12.
[DE] is quite possible, especially if they move down for more picks. Gholston would be a no-brainer at 12, and Merling (Clemson) and Harvey (Fl) are possible if they move down.
[CB] Lots available, there are some that will be hard to ignore if they're the highest rated. I see at least one coming aboard, the question is how high. I wouldn't be surprised to see one fairly high because of the surplus here.
[K] I see them using a late pick here; they need both. I don't know whether Mare will sign, which would take care of kicker, but I think they'd be willing to pick a punter with one of their 7s.
Because of the Broncos position in the draft, it's very possible that they'll move to take advantage of the drafts' strength's a certain positions.
The Broncos picks; (1) 12 (2) 42 (4) 108, 119 (5) 139, 148 (6) 183 (7) 220, 227
There's far more that I could say here, but it's a start. What's everyone else's opinion? I'm focused on the Broncos but I'd be willing to discuss other teams, too.
