Punishment too harsh??

Though it hasn't been meted out yet I'm bugged about the universities punishment policy.

Last year Sip got a years suspension

Katoa and Geer are facing the same thing this year

Then I read this - http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3341884

There is no question that PSU is one of the most respected colleges in the country and if this is their stance regarding student code violations I think CU needs to reexamine their own policies and get in step with a policy more like Penn State's.

Just because the DA's office has a "no mercy toward players" policy doesn't necessarily mean the U has to march to that drum on an internal level.

Swish,

To me Penn State's policy sounds similar ours. The kid got in a fight, the student organization suspended him and took the matter out of the coach's hands. When he comes back, JOPA can figure out what he wants to do with him on the team level.

Unless I'm reading this is is the same treatment Sip received, only the PSU kid's timing was much better. Geer's incident occurred after the "semester suspension cuttoff" date, and though Kota's incident occurred before, it wasn't handled in time. Otherwise, both of these student-athletes would be facing the exact same scenario--a Spring suspension and Summer return.

Bottom line:

If you're gonna get stupid, do it in January (or December if your team's not in a bowl game).

are they one of the most respected? i didnt really think so.

In terms of running a clean program and graduating players, JoPa and PSU have consistently ranked among the nation's top programs. Granted it's not Harvard and I can't speak to unspoken deal between the State College authorities and the Athletic Department, but you generally don't hear about Penn State kids in the news.

Banning a player from campus for the summer is a total cop out and I do not agree that CU should adjust their standards. As long as the student code is applied to everyone (football player, non-football player) the same, I have no issue with it.

There are problems with intelligence and discipline on the team right now. Making lighter punishment is not going to fix that. If anything, I think it will make it worse.

Sip didn't get an entire year. He was removed from the team and school for the fall semester, and returned for spring.

The problem for Geer and Katoa is that if the school hands out a semester hiatus, it will most likely be the coming fall, since they're both past the cut-off for it to apply this spring.

For the record I'm not expecting the U to look the other way (Mo @ NU for example) where student athletes are concerned.

I just want administration to be in line with what other respected programs are doing. If they are no problem but it sounds to me listening to what I hear on this board at times that the DA's office is out to make an example of offending football players and the university feels obligated to be more stern as a result. Just my interpretation. If so what I'm suggesting is CU shouldn't be bullied by the DA's office to pile on more punishment than would be the norm.
