CU-UCLA Game Thread! Espn 2 5 PM MT

#1 Mangram (sp) was real productive last year and I wondered why he wasn't more prominent.
Mangham is more of a power runner. It looked like the blocking scheme was more designed for the back to plant his foot and break to the hole. Broussard does that well with a very quick first step and a burst through the hole. Mangham in comparison looked slower to the hole and less explosive.

If this blocking continues Mangham will have to adjust better to it. I think once healthy Fontenot will thrive with it.

We may see a few more runs for no gain when the back picks the wrong spot to run to or it doesn't develop well but it also looked like last night Broussard was a step or two away from some big runs. We may see more explosive gains with this system and these backs.

Unfortunately that probably doesn't bode will for Mangham in the system, and he is a guy who I really like.

Side note from last night, I'm predicting Maurice Bell will take a kick to the house this year if they keep using him. He has that long stride and gets up to a top speed pretty quick. He looked close to breaking it on his second return last night.

Noyer was Shocking for sure. Kinda makes you wonder about why he wasn’t playing more last year??
Because he was at safety???

THINK of who was coaching! Mikey Mac was always in a rut on his upperclassmen and would refuse to play the understudies even in garbage time! How many times did we see Sefo or Montez take hits when the Buffs were up by a couple scores late in games? Tucker wasn't any better, even after he moved Noyer to safety.

The problem I see on the D was the LBs were out of position a lot. They were always to close to the line of scrimage and seemed to blitz a lot. Everytime ucla hit that middle pass to the TE our LBs were nowhere to be found. How many tackles did Landman have?
Also too many PI calls that kept drive alive for ucla. That will get cleaned up I hope.
Finally, Noyer was a rock star, very happy with him and the O. The O Line played well, and I am happy with them owning the LOS.
For this staff to on have 20 some practices and put that product on the field, I am very impressed.

Jarek is as well named as he is good at football, what a great performance, veteran level of patience from a guy in his first start and he shouldn't lose that spot now.

As much as I've always really liked Noyer for some reason, I didn't give the call for him to start much respect, he's at the very least earned the right to be respected as a QB at this level, even if where he falls in that regard is up in the air. Really glad for him, he seems like a gamer and a leader. Refreshing to have a guy like him back there.
Loved that play when the Bruins' DB thought he'd get a lick in on Sam and ended up face down and stunned after the attempt. Sam's response to that was he played DB last year and was used tothe hitting!

It did seem like a lot of confusion between the LBs and the safeties, especially with the TE coverage. Hopefully they work that out. Carson Wells trying to cover TE on deep routes is not going to work.

Special Teams needs to tighten up, cause you make a great point on a bright spot, and yet two blocked kicks were on the dark side. Fix it

I guess, but it didn’t look to me like the front 4 had any recognition of the screen play as they were getting past the OL. Usually someone has that “oh ****” moment when they realize that the Guard is waving them through. Our front 4 never seemed to have that, despite my great play recognition and tv coaching!
You could tell when they were going to screen, don't have to be Belichick to see it coming. Thing is, it doesn't matter if you're out of position or miss tackles.

This team can win 3 games if our offense can run the rock like we did tonight.
So are you changing your 100% absolute position that Lewis (who we don't know really anything about) should be #1 and we shouldn't really be playing the QB who is currently giving the team the best chance to win? Because you were off-the-charts on your position last week in the other thread.

My view:

They asked Noyer to come back, which now appears to have been a smart move, at least for insurance.
They promised Noyer a chance to EARN his way into being the starter - they kept that promise.
They promised that Lytle would get some time, given he had finished in a near tie during said battle - they kept that promise.

At this point, I'm hoping that they think as highly as ever of Lewis and we can get him some garbage time and even perhaps give him a strong chance to be the guy at some point.

But to NOT play to win THIS YEAR is really unfair to key Seniors like Mustafa, Landman, KD and Noyer, but to the entire team.
They have a promise to the team in general that you EARN PT.

Promises kept.

This year still doesn’t matter. We won’t win a division, conference, or national title. 1-3 wins won’t propel the program forward in recruiting. Making the near term a priority is really poor program management.

I’m glad we won last night. I don’t like rooting against my team. However, program management suffers when you don’t have a pipeline of competent QBs.

Wins always matter.

The moment that the players realize that wins aren't the top priority for the coaches they cease to be a priority for the players. When the players don't care about winning your program is dead and it is almost impossible to get it back without again changing coaches and in some cases turning over the roster.

It is also important that the players know that the coaches word has substance. If they say that the guys who earn the time are going to play then you have to do that, again not doing so is a good way to lose a team.

Noyer proved that he belongs out there. None of us were at practice but if Lytle did what he was asked in practice and told he would get a chance to play then he needed a chance to play. We still won the game and now we have a backup with at least a few meaningful snaps under his belt.

I am hoping that we see Lewis some this year. If he earns it then I am hoping that we see a lot of Lewis this year.

None of that can be done at the expense of compromising a winning culture.

If Noyer plays really really well, then he can come back next year for a Super Senior Season right? This year does not count!

A lot of fun.
Noyer was very good.
Broussard was great.
O-line was solid.
Coaching and D suspect.
No feel for Noyer and the long ball. Glad he stayed around.
Totally disagree here. That was one of the finest performances by a buff coaching staff in a long long time.
No discipline penalties, one pre snap penalty, well executed subbing and grouping, extremely effective game plan and execution of that plan, extremely good play calling and players playing above expectations

The only problem I saw was the MM era like PI penalties.

Given the incredible adversity this staff faced, the results were nothing short of phenomenal.

Rewatching the game, and let's give some props to the low key MVP of the game, Matt Lynch. He is the holder, and on the last FG attempt he did a great job to catch the snap and get it down in the first place. After it was blocked he quickly got his hand on the ball and knocked it down out of the hands of a UCLA defender who would have likely scored otherwise. If UCLA scores a TD there without any time coming off the clock, the end game looks very different.

Noyer was very good and what we needed. Great decisions on RPOs and was accelerating into those runs like a back.

Broussard was great. I love how he hit the hole like Phil. Even Phil was impressed.

The O line played as good as I can remember in recent years. Imagine if Phil would’ve been able to run behind this line. The 2 big blown up missed block plays in the first half were both the fault of a WR not at least chipping or getting in the way. Both were Stanley mistakes on runs. He needs to improve there now that he’s an inside receiver.

I hope number 80 is replaced on FG team. Ugh. Two piss poor efforts.

Definite bright spots on D. Should’ve had 2 more picks. DB awareness of ball coming needs to improve. Slow reactions by LBs at times, but may be due to not grasping alignment or assignments well enough. Not at last year’s CSU game level, but not ready for real games yet. Good job for the most part of D line clogging the los when necessary.

I was pleasantly surprised by the offense that was called. I was a bit worried at the beginning of the game, but it definitely improved. I’d like to see more going downfield worked in for sure. Maybe with KD back we’ll see that.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to seeing progress. I think KD had his team ready to play and he has the right demeanor on the sidelines. However, he made some poor in-game decisions that will eventually cost us. I don’t want him to be like Fangio in that area. Also, obviously his recruiting needs to improve, but that’s for another day. It’s definitely nice to see competency on the field.

I decided that with the shortened season that I’m not going to get too excited or mad this season. I’ll be able to save my bowl eligibility anxiety for next year.

Grades from last night-
Offense gets high marks. Jarek Broussard was excellent. Noyer played well. I think we scored touchdowns off all of their turnovers-huge.
Defense is a C-5 turnovers, but 42 points isn't acceptable.
STs-F. Two blocked kicks.

A lot to like, but a lot to work on. Easier to do that after a win.

I know it. After the coaching job I saw last night, HCMM and HCMT look really bad. I’m really impressed. I was a guy that thought that we would be lucky to get 1-2 wins. I see the foundation of a really great thing

All I know is momentum is not something to jack around with in football, any sport actually. I don't mind getting reps for other guys, we need to. I guess it was the timing more than anything imho.

Conventionally yes. And I woulda left Noyer in. But what Pinkel did with Chase Daniel playing a series every game his Fr year, paid massive dividends the three following years. Outlier example and not entirely analogous.

Went into this game not really knowing what to expect. Up here, it's all Jimmy Lake and the Huskies, all the time, so any news I get is from Stuart or this board.

That said, holy smokes -- very impressed with Noyer -- several tough runs, great play action, and a lot of zip on his throws. I can only imagine what would have been last year had Montez not ran away from pressure, but stood in there and delivered the throw. As previously mentioned, Sam gave a licking and kept on ticking -- wonder if that DB is still seeing stars even after hitting him helmet to helmet.

Broussard -- Lindsay 2.0. Hit the gap with speed, one cut and go -- even when he appeared to be bound up, he kept his feet moving and got more positive yards.

Defense. Well, biggest improvement is from game 1 to game 2? Let's see what we can do!

The thought that wins don't matter is ridiculous. Wins always matters, even this year. Getting blown out every game because you want to play younger players will not help this program get better. Plain and simple, wins do help in recruiting and we need that.
Wins matter when you have good recruiters. We do not have good recruiters or a competitive recruiting infrastructure. The idea that winning 1-3 games will improve Colorado recruiting is unfounded.

Agree with everything you said but the competition between Noyer and lytle was not close

I disagree. Winning solves all your problems. You could have the best recruiter, if he is at a loosing program he wont pull in 4 or 5 * players.
If you are an average recruiter at a winning program you will get those top commits.
Players want to win, if you win they will come.
I would say wins matter more when you have poor recruiters.
