Colorado v USC - September 30, 2023 - 10am MT, FOX

Just watched this video of Miller's highlights from yesterday. I forgot that his first catch comes with 7 minutes to go in the third quarter, and CU down 41-14. A true freshman entered the game with his team losing by 27 points against the #8 team in the country, and he willed them back into the game. Incredible competitiveness and drive.

Man, if he was just able to break that one at 48-34 with over 9 minutes left... so close.

I was wondering during the game why teams defer so much on the opening kickoff. 99 times out of 100, the team that deferred asks to receive in the second half, which is exactly what would happen if you chose to kick in the first half. So essentially, by choosing to defer, all you're doing is choosing to kick the ball to start the game.

Back before deferring was a thing, everyone took the ball. It just seems like we've decided that the 1% of the time when you might worry about going into the wind in the second half or whatever is worth starting the game on defense. Maybe I'm just old school, but just give me the ball.

This is the best performance I have ever seen from a true freshman in his first game. it's ridiculous. Diving catch, toe tapping the sideline, long catches with arms on his body. I don't care if he is mediocre in practice. You have to play him from now on and see what is he going to grow into.

In his postgame comments, CP said about Shedeur: "We have receivers calling from all around the country that want to play with him." I'm hoping that goes for O-linemen too.
The guys who protected SS as he hit 70% of his passes and won the Heisman

No. Deferring to the second half is deferring choice to the second half. If you win the toss and elect to Kickoff, the other team will have the choice in the second half and they will choose to receive, thus receiving both kickoffs.

The popular option of taking the ball to start 2H is because then you are able to start on offense after being in the flow of the game, so either playing catch up or extending the lead. You can also “steal” a possession sometimes by scoring near the end of 1H and getting the kickoff in 2H

If my team has a very potent offense, I want the ball first. Score a TD and put the opponent down 7-0 from the start; huge emotional edge

Otherwise, I want it first in the second half.

Just the emotional driven opinion of a non-technical fan, not based on stats or modeling.

If you choose to kick the other team will receive the ball in the first half and choose to receive the ball in the second half. You are deferring to get your choice of kicking or receiving in the second half but the key is that a decision is made for both halves.

Deferring the kickoff for the 2nd half makes sense, especially for the Buffs. They have been a better offensive team in the 2nd half this year. Usually the offense of most teams will be less efficient at the start of the game, so that first drive is often a good chance to get a stop. You can steal some momentum by scoring at the end of the half and getting the ball back. Stats show that receiving in the 2nd half gives you a higher chance of stealing a possession and on average leads to more points. The more interesting question is - why have the Buffs not lost a coin toss this year, including overtime? I think our coin toss streak was pretty amazing last year too.

I was not aware that the other team gets to choose. At the same time, that would be weird to choose to kickoff. I saw that in the old Big 8 days when there was no deferring and you had those stadiums that were open on one if not both ends and the winds would be blowing 25 mph or more, but that was actually choosing which way to go, not to actually kick off.

I would have preferred to take the ball yesterday. Get the better group out there to start. At the same time, the offense was **** in the first quarter, so it probably wouldn't have made much difference.

I typically like my team to receive the second half kickoff, but in the Buffs case, I think they need to put pressure on the opponents with their best unit. Can’t have opponents going up two scores before SS touches the ball more than 3 snaps

And Riley was likable in his post game interview. For me, this is the most likable USC team I can remember.
I don't think I thought "**** USC" once during the whole game.

Also we now have a niece that attends USC so maybe we've softened up to them a bit?

that was everything short of the win that we wanted to see this week. improvement in lots of areas. i want another shot at them and the ducks next year-- it sucks that it won't happen.

Coach Prime is going to put together a lights out great class between transfers and hs kids this year and our Buffs are going to make a run next season. that **** is so far ahead of any normal schedule, i cannot stop smiling.

The quote is somewhere in the thread, but he essentially said he didn't like the look and checked to runs. He admitted he needs to be more aware of the clock.
He said he needs to make sure all 11 are on the same page to execute the play and he needs to be the one who has everyone on the same page. Sounds like a mixture of leadership but also not trusting the personnel to execute. A part of that is on everyone, including Shedeur even if he took the bullet

This.

USC has scored a touchdown on their opening drive every single game this year. And we seem to start slow.

Win the toss, elect to receive.

Worst case, At least our offense has touched the ball twice before being down 2 tds.

Just rewatched the game

Miller made some incredible NFL catches
McClain shut down his side of the field once he played
Rodrick Ward was a major downgrade from Sanders
ST’s remains terrible
Why no McCaskill?

He looked like a baby Cris Carter
McClain looked great outside of the first play where he looked lost a bit.
Ward had a major impact in the 4th but was a disaster in the first 3 quarters.
Awful
Still recovering. He's not 100% there yet.

I remember a punt during the game from south to north and our returner clearly had trouble with the sun. I sort of realized that the USC receivers would be looking back into the sun that entire quarter. I’m not clear on how the coin toss works but if you win it can you manipulate which direction you go in the 4th quarter? Obviously a 10 am kickoff is different in that regard than a 1:30 or later kickoff.

The students have been really awesome! Tons of energy. But one complaint. In the second half my son pointed to the south end zone and asked where the hell are the students? It was 3/4 empty. I guess after the first half they didn’t believe.
