Official CU vs. UCLA 10/28/23 Game Thread

I totally respect Klatt, he is our guy, and using the word Targeting is something that makes all of us arguing over one single element, but again it is not just about targeting, it is about violent hits. The NBA went to Flagrant 1, Flagrant 2, etc...
The CFB only has the Targeting bucket to pile **** into.
Should Shilo get ejected, probably not, would be better to have more options, but it is where we are right now
Violent hit, followed by the flex looks bad
He's saying that it's a rule but it's a dumb rule. I don't think he'd say this if Shiloh led with his helmet.

I'm just sick of the million different interpretations of rules that are ruled on inconstently continually. Have we figured out what a catch is yet? I sure as hell don't know what a hold is anymore.

You are 100% spot on, and it is so hard to translate it, but the goal is honorable to try and keep players safe.
The hope is that players will just respect each other enough not to kill each other. Big Sportscenter hits are just not gonna work long-term, and players have to care about each other's futures.
The catch rules need to stay the same for at least 4-5 years with a more simple concept that once 1 or 2 feet touch the ground with possession, it is a catch, the idea of control once you hit the ground is just plain wrong and that change has ruined a lot about the game
Shilo is not a dirty player, but he likes to try and hit people hard, this time it just looked bad

These lineman deserve every bit of sh!t people can give them online and in person. All of it. I’ve never seen a group so inept and uncaring about what they’re supposed to do.
But you told me I was SOOOOI wrong for calling them out.

🖕

Facing the best defensive front and you drop back 50+ times in mostly a one score game

It’s unclear why Flea is the RB coach

Correct. They get stuffed on one run, abandon it, and then tell the media it wasn’t working so why would you keep doing it. 11 total rushing attempts tonight, btw… 4-5 of which game in garbage time or end of half run out the clock.

11 total team rushing attempts, almost half of which were at the end of the half to run it the clock or end of game down by 20. It’s offensive malpractice no matter how bad your OL is
i dont know sh*t about sh*t but when your opponent doesnt even need to put their DL with hands on the ground after the first drive of the game.... they dont think you're going to run the ball. and if your opposition DL is standing up and running at your OL on EVERY PLAY, your OL is going to get beat for speed rushes every time. run. the. ball.

I tried to quote every post in this thread bitching about the oline, Several by @The Alabaster Yak @H.E. Pennypacker , @Da Lama, @manhattanbuff - but i couldnt due to the 15k character limit. Anyone wanna tell me how this isn't the worst oline in D1 college football now?

1.0 yards per rush.

7 sacks

FFS NC Central only gave up 4 sacks to these ****sticks. Ran for 90 yds.

We got 25.

****ing straight trash

The targeting call should be kept in perspective.
Football is no longer a "smash-mouth" game. Most 'skill position' players don't bother with mouth guards anymore. College and pro.
Refs are erring on the side of safety, and missing some calls.

the game has been made more gentle in the last 5 years or so.

What's the explanation for no Smoke, almost no McCaskill? I hope they don't hit the portal.
Smoke is a super senior.
McCaskill will have difficulty transferring and playing year one. His best chance is to play here with the new OL we’ll have next season.

not sure if these guys can't pickup blocking assignments, learn the play book, injuries, or the "dog house" ?

I still don't believe this was targeting. He led with his shoulder. When you are moving that fast helmets are going to touch that's why they wear them.

But you can’t argue that there was not helmet to face mask contact. And I agree with you that it wasn’t forceable. They touched and that was about it. But the rule says….yada, yada.

The refs reacted to the force of the hit, and it was violent, and immediately believed it had to be a penalty. The touching of his helmet to the face mask gave them the out they needed. I guess.

Oh, and Shilo doing the flexing pose didn’t help.

So you don’t trust the staff’s evaluation of him even though they see him in practice every day? Maybe he just either isn’t very good or he’s nursing a nagging injury.
Have you seen how they use Edwards? Why would people trust how they're using players at this point? It's baffling.

Hankerson isn't great but he's decent, sits on the bench while Edwards continues to play but does little production wise and gets blown up trying to pass block. So even if 22 isn't in the playing Edwards makes zero sense, Wilkerson would be better than Edwards.

You see the same thing at LB.

More Bad Coaching -- Do you believe ?????

I don’t know. I truly thought Prime would be as ruthless with underperforming coaches as he is with underperforming players. But the more I hear him after embarrassing coaching performances, the more concerned I get. I don’t see him firing or demoting any of the guys he brought with him. So that’s already 4 guys we probably won’t see moved (Flea, Hart, Bartolone, Reilly), he’s got a relationship with Charles Kelly. He hasn’t once said there’s an issue with o line coaching.

Color me very concerned we see the same staff next year.

I doubt it. I believe he has already publicly said he has put coaches on notice

The 2021 and 2022 CU OLs were far superior.
That's hard to say. The guards are better but let's be clear. This QB can handle an extremely advanced scheme but this OL as well as the last year's one handled basic schemes because their QB wasn't capable. That's why you had true freshman WRs having success because it was cookie cutter. This scheme is basically too advanced for the OL based on the QB.

Before you ask, why don't we simplify. Because other teams watch film and they see how advanced 2 is and they throw their best at us in terms of coverages and schemes.

2 basically forces defenses to step up their game or get their ass whooped. This puts too much pressure on our OL who are already terrible at run blocking.

An OL like this should have a QB like Garbers and win no games or steal one game. 2 is just too good for them. It's not their fault. QBs like this don't play for teams this talent deficient ever in the trenches

he at least falls forward for 3 yards

I know you weren’t around here the last couple years, but I made a bet with Manhattan that the 2022 CU offense would be better on a PPG basis than 2021, solely based off the idea that 2021 was so bad that it literally couldn’t get worse. It did.

That’s what this feels like. We all thought 2022 OL was so bad that it couldn’t get worse…. But it literally got worse in 2023.

You can blame it on scheme or whatever, but having a QB like Shedeur and an OC like Lewis should be covering some warts like poor OL play, but it’s not. That’s how bad that unit is

I fail to see how rushing 3 or 4 or a simple ILB blitz are throwing their best at the OL or represent something terribly advanced.

I mean if Brendan Lewis or Shrout was back at QB there would've been double the sacks and 3 picks. Can't speak for Sean Lewis but Shedeur has been covering for this Oline
