the cold hard truth about the staff

CU hired a hc that it could get relatively cheap. it couldn't afford a big name. hawkins was a bargain compared to what a butch davis would have cost.

and, CU doesn't have the $$ to pay assistants enough to attract and keep the good ones. you've heard about the multi-year contract thing.

the elite football programs, when they are struggling, bring in coordinators at top dollar... chizik at ut for 900k for example. or norm chow at ucla at north of 500k... or the coordinator at 'bama...

CU, on the other hand, must groom guys and hope they pan out. the learning curve for this staff has been very steep. they struggled moving from the wac to the b12. they are struggling with the playcalling and the fact that every single team they will play in conference is good enough to beat you.

but, they are hopefully learning and they are good recruiters.

here's the punchline of the cold, hard truth: if you fired this staff AFTER we have now invested almost 3 seasons in their on the job learning, you are going to replace them with a LESS experienced staff. and, you'll be starting over again. i'd love to get a "real" coordinator in here, but i am skeptical that CU is going to pay the top dollar required to do it.

dem dere are da facts. deal with it.

UT pays $425,000 for Muschamp.

Bama pays $4M/year.

CU is in no position to pay that much for the top guys in the land. Bohn has been doing an outstanding job though of upgrading our facilities. Hopefully he stays around and we can pay and retain high quality staff.

Other schools have a bigger fanbase and more support, whether it's the state or boosters. Okie Lite is set for many, many years with what Pickens gave them.

Agreed, but didn't Hawkins turn down Notre Dame? What was that offer? Agreed about the assistant staff too though.

I don't buy this argument.

I have seen a lot of discussion in the past several weeks about how Chris Peterson was the "real genius" at Boise State, and how he may have been the linchpin that brought about Boise State's offensive success.

How much do you think Boise State was paying Peterson when he was the offensive coordinator? Given the fact that he makes roughly $600,000 as Boise State's head coach, I am comfortable saying he wasn't making $217,776 as their offensive coordinator - which is what Helfrich is making right now.

There are LOTS of coaches out there in the world. Lots of coaches who are DYING for an opportunity to coach at a Big 12 school. The key thing is having a head coach who can do a good job of selecting those coaches, and a good job of keeping the coaches together as a cohesive unit, all on the same page and all sharing the same philosophy.

Ok State is only paying their offensive coordinator $228,000. Of course, Gundy is the one calling the plays and running most of their offense, but it isn't as if it is that difficult to find a quality coach and pay him a decent salary.

Uh Kiesau, Helfrich, and Cabral (Hagan if that counts) have all coached in BCS conferences. That's what, half of the coaching staff.

NO! Under your scenario the key is to move guys that aren't working out quickly and bring in another.

What's that old saying? "You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear".

Cut your losses early. Helfrich and Riddle need to go. Hawk can groom another OC. Helfrich had zero, nada, no experience as a OC at any comparable level. He's not cutting it. See ya

Helfrich was the OC at Arizona St. which is pretty comparable

I think he was ASU's QB coach when Hawkins hired him. Regardless, he did coach under Koetter, who knows offense pretty well.
