Anxious....Buffs Near-term Future

I have been preaching that we need to give Hawk at least 4 years..perhaps 5.

I sure as hell hope that Hawk is the guy, and that he gets the ship on the right course (challenging for the Big 12 on an annual basis). Otherwise, look at another 5 years of futility (at a minimum) if CU has to replace him. If that is the case, I will lose interest, as will the majority of Buff nation outside of Colorado.

Next year is critical....and, a decent recruiting cycle will get us going.

That's not true in the slightest. If some turn of events came about in the next year or two in which Hawk was no longer the head coach here, the old "the cupboard is bare" argument that was so appropriately used after Barny's tenure ended would no longer apply. We obviously wouldn't be as stocked as the UT's and USC's of the world, but there's a lot of D-1 programs who would LOVE to have the cache of young players that the Buffs have right now.

Really? The current cache of players would be an identical match with the incoming coach's philosophy? Dream on.....

It's not like we've got offensive or defensive personnel that are custom tailored to only operate out of some fringe football philosophy.

Is this really worth worrying about?

No, but a good offensive line, a platoon of running backs. And big, fast, athletic linebackers. Coaches can adapt to that... Hawk had PRACTICALLY nothing when he got here.

unproven offensive line...unproven linebackers....platoon of RBs???? One guy (who is injured) had a good freshman year, the rest are unknown (or suspect...).

Agreed about Hawk's dilemma when he got here. The point is...now is the time for Hawk to get it going. Or, we will be looking at several more years of futility.

I'd argue that Sumler looked pretty good towards the end of the year this year. And DScott is the real deal. He just needs a line.

I think so...if you give a rat's ass about Buff football....

I hope you are right....but again, now is the time to get this thing rocking.....

Darrell Scott= Hugh Charles
The fact that Hagen and Hawk were able to turn the tentative gym rat, Charles. Into the aggressive back, who HAD he played like his senior year, all his years, He would have been 1st or 2nd round draft pick.
I think that Darrel Scott is INCREDIBLY unrefined and by his JUNIOR year. No sooner. Will he be what every one had hoped.

I don't want to single you out because there's a lot of you that think this but I'm not seeing all this "young" talent that everyone here talks about on the field.. Maybe some of the redshirts from last year's class will be big timers, but from what I've seen, I don't see any WOW players, he's a first round pick guys on our team... J Smith is a good special teams player, okay WR, Speedy looks to have a future and Miller will probably be an all-league player. Manake kind of impressed me at the end of the season but other than that, I'm not seeing all this "young" talent.. What is all this young talent you've seen play on the field that excites you so much?

The thing is, most of the guys that people are referring to have not seen the field.

He's right, unfortunately....

Our three young CBs. Other than that, it is mostly unproven talent right now.

Yeah I know.. Until I see Katoa, Major, Simas, etc, on the field, I don't consider them talented young players..
Hawk is rolling the dice with these guys.....I hope it works out for him.....and us!

Let's see.... MTM took over the starting job as a true freshmen before blowing an ACL. Miller will be a Soph and will be blowing guy off the line. Hansen was a nobody, and although he certainly needs to learn to stay in the pocket, showed athletic ability that stunned most of us who thought we recruited a QB with no other options but Idaho State. Speedy was one of the most impressive freshmen in the country. A tight end named Deehan cracked the rotation as a true freshmen. Our last two games, we played two freshmen without taking any guff at all. Jimmy Smith (SO) is the real deal at CB. Cunningham cracked the lineup at DL as a true freshmen, playing over Juniors and Sophs. D. Scott made some outstanding plays, and I'll assume that we may see him healthy and much better. It's hard to judge O-Linemen as individuals without breaking down film, but we played the following guys this year who have at least 3 years left to get better: Miller, Adkins, Behrens, MTM, Bahr, Iltis, Tau.

We redshirted Givens who I saw play OT in the US ARMY All-American game last year and he had no problem blocking the country's best D-Linemen, even though he had lost 30-40 pounds with a mystery illness.

We redshirted Katoa, who lit up the US Army kids all week and got rave reviews.

We redshirted Jon Major, ditto above two.

We got to see Simas tear it up in the spring game. I know, it's just the spring game, but he was WAY better than the other CU receivers imho.

Polk was the #9 RB in last year's class.

What we have is a team that has most of it's talent at Frosh/Soph levels. I think 8 of our top 9 O-Linemen will be underclass next year. That's ridiculous. Part of that is NOT because they are all-world but because Barnett didn't recruit the last two years and Hawk's first class was predictably poor. In addition, there was massive attrition at CU during the scandal, post-scandal, and coaching change. We have no upperclassmen playing line left. Our young guys are perhaps not all world on the line, but they will be better by their Junior year than they were as freshmen.

I think there's a chance that Miller, MTM, Behrens, and Givens will receive all conference honors before they're done. They all have 3 or more years left here.

We need to shore up DL and WR positions QUICKLY. We need to figure out who the QB of the future is. I think Cody is more ready, but Hansen's ceiling is much higher. We solve these issues, and CU will challenge for the North and rank top-25 soon enough. That'd be a big step forward.

Great potential...but still unproven. I believe in Hawk and what he is building...but his time to pull it off is 2009 or 2010.

Some are proven, some are "potential". But it doesn't take much of a leap of faith to think we are improving and that the younger talent is superior. Who is in our senior class next year?

Behrens (FB)
Geer (TE)
Smart (LB) - former walkon
Brown (CB)
Mohler (LB)

That's pretty much it. You can throw in Head, but I don't think he will be in the mix for playing time if Iltis and MTM are healthy. You can throw in Ben Burney at CB, but he didn't play in 2008. That's it. This is a VERY Young team.

What is that supposed to mean? Isn't every recruit a roll of the dice, or should Hawk have recruited some "guaranteed to be 3 year all-conference performers or you get your scholarship back" players instead?

8 wins in 2009

11 wins, bxii championship berth, and bcs bowl game in 2010

mark it down now...you heard it here first.

If it happens you will come back here a prophet, if it doesn't happen, no one will remember this prediction anyway and you are not hurt. Way to go out on a limb... :smile2:

Good question. What I was attempting to say is that the Buffs are all about potential...there seem to be few "proven" players going into a critical stretch for Hawk's CU career. This is relative to other programs that seem to have a better mix of experienced players vs new guys.
