Rumors flying around Weis will be bought out after signing day with Gruden coming in as the new guy.

Gruden´s dad worked for Notre Dame as an assistant and Gruden grew up in South Bend.

I think it is wishful thinking on the part of some domers.

Weis has a buyout on his contract of about $20 million. Gruden has a contract with the Bucs that pays him about $6 million a year through 2011. ND would have to come up with enough money to make it worthwhile for Gruden to walk away from that.

Gruden's dad was an assistant almost 30 years ago...I don't think that carries much weight.

Your figure for Weis's buyout is incorrect. It is more in the neighborhood of $4 - $5 million

The way I understood it with Shanahan is that Shanahan is guaranteed those 21m over the next 3 years NO MATTER WHAT. If he decides to get a job and that job pays him 1m, Bowlen will pony up the difference. I guess it´d be similar with Chucky here.

$4 - $5 million is chump change for ND, they could host a few golf outings and collect that, but I think Weis will live or die at the end of the 09 season.
The Irish are pumped up now after the big bowl win. His fat ass will definitely be on the grill this season.

Barring an encounter with the Atkins Diet, you might be literally correct...

the ND rumor mill is not to be trusted. i have a ND buddy who swore up and down Weis was gone at season's end and Brian Kelly was in. done deal.

i could see Gruden sit a year and wait to see if Charlie can pull his posterior out of the fire.

i think that's a real possibility.

No. He is under contract and is long as he is under contract he will be paid but he cannot work for someone else. Usually what happens is when someone gets an offer from someone else, they will approach the contract holder to negotiate a settlement or buyout. Say Shannahan gets an offer of 5 years to coach a team for $6 million a year after this next year. The Broncos may just settle for no further payments...Shanny is out $2 million net on the Front End but makes it up on the back end. See link for typical contract talk. Or they could just pay him $2 Million.

Typical contract language for NFL coaches.

Weis, Gruden, No difference ND hasn't been ND since Lou Holtz left. They recruit top 10 classes every year but at the rate they fire their coaches and hire a new one they'll never be the same until they settle down on one coach and give him atleast a good five years. Holtz leaves, Davie comes in recruits really well they get rid of him and Willingham has one good season with his recruits. Willingham comes in picks up where Davie did with recruiting has a few bad years they fire him, Weis comes in has one good season with his recruits and now it seems like they're on the same path again as Weis is recruiting just as well if not better.

ND needs stability and they haven't had that for years, we're looking for the same thing and if Hawk can give us that 10 win season that he has mentioned for this up coming year then it will silent a lot of the critics out there. Weis needs a BCS Bowl Birth or he's out the door.

What ND needed, they didn't get - Urban Meyer. And the world is a better place because of it.
