No surprise, guess who was tied for last in rushing ypc last year if sacks are not included...

I won't miss Grimes or Helfy. There is literally no where to go but up.

The surprising statistic is how bad our rushing DEFENSE was last year. 5.0 YPC adjusted... good for the bottom 3rd. If someone had told me that at the beginning of last year, I would have told them they were CRAZY. I really hopethe offense takes some pressure off our DL this year, and that the younguns step up...

The surprising best? BAYLOR!

We missed Dizon a lot last year on defense as I think we had the containment on the interior line (maybe not so much the outside) against the run, but he had a great nose for the ball, especially as our DTs ate up blocks.

I really think Burton is gonna be huge for us this year if he stays health. Looked like the force we all thought he would be after his frosh year. Hell he ran a faster 40 than Dizon too

Hypolite was better as a junior. We got pushed around a bit more on the defensive line last year. Add in struggles at LB (particularly Smart IMO), and you have a recipe for poor rush defense.

I thought Pittman was suppose to making the linemen stronger?

Strength can be mitigated by a lack of depth. I'm guessing Hypolite and Nicholas played a lot of snaps last year. Hell, we had Cunningham playing a decent number of snaps and I'm not sure anyone saw that coming when Fall camp started.

I remember a stat that showed that our DTs were in on 80-85% of all plays last year on D. That's too much for a strength position since you gradually get worn down and can exert less force over time, especially since you aren't forcing too many 3 and outs.

Hypolite did play better as a Jr, but DTs and LBs play off of each other to contain the run up the middle. Dizon may not have had the best forty time, but his ability to read the play and know where the ball was going was crucial (as well as his on field leadership); it's rare that you have a 2nd round, Butkus award semi-finalist on your roster...even when you have an awesome coach, like Cabral, at the LB position.

Remember he led the team in tackles as well.....by a big margin.

Actually, anyone who watched Cunningham in the Under Armor All-American game saw that coming. He was a beast in HS (I thought he stood out more than Ryan Miller when I scouted Miller as a senior) and he proved he was a beast at the all-star game. I think he'll be just as good THIS year as what we lost, if he is completely healthy. He was not healthy much of the fall from what I heard.

I also think that Hypo got a little distracted in all of the things he had going on as the public face of the team and probably didn't get as much time in the weight room, etc. I know we lost Dizon, but George did not dominate the LOS like he did as a Junior. He was still darned good though. Nicholas was equally as good. Those two played a lot the last 3 years.

As an aside, I think the Colorado kids have been making a big impact here. Hawk is seeing how some of these kids, without big time national reps, are just big time players. Cunningham and Mahnke are two key ones from last year's class. Pericek is said to be a guy who will contribute this year as a freshmen... We are getting a bunch of them on schollie and also the walkons. Are any kids going to CSU anymore?

I am anxiously looking forward to seeing what he and Major can do on the field. Both have a ton of potential.

We need Pericak to step it up this year. Major is probably a year away. Overall, I'm very happy with the CO players on the team though. Three starters on the OL, the DL (Kaynor, Cunningham, Pericak), three starters in the secondary, and the list goes on.
