Will the Buffs be able to count on Max Tuioti Mariner

yes. they can count on him. he may be gone for a year or two but, that is okay.

look, we lose some kids because they cant study. we lose some kids because they cant stay out of trouble. we lose some kids because they think the grass is greener on the other side. they are all gone for good.

this kid wants to go help others. his body is battered and needs time to heal. he is not leaving the program for any of those reasons. no need to jump off the cliff when it comes to MTM.

he has a box he needs to check in his life. let the kid do it and wish him luck. i say he will be back.

I will never question a kid when it comes to these things. I'm not LDS, but I respect the commitment they give on these missions.

Another good thing is he'll come back healed up. Instead of trying to rush him back in action.

Hopefully when he comes back from his mission... it's for the Buffs. Jameson Davis left Boise St to go on a mission and came back a Buffalo

MTM will come back as a healthy 21 year old freshman just in time to fill a depth need on an o-line that has way too many seniors and just graduated Nate Solder. Whether he goes on the mission or not, MTM taking this year off (and possibly 2010) will be good for him and the program.

can't fault him at all. he's a good kid and is going to impact the lives of others. looking forward to seeing him in a couple years.

as an aside, damn we have bad luck with 4*s, katoa, mtm, major acl, along with countless others over the past years.

When is there good news?

The silver lining in this, is that MTM has focus and the desire to help others. And it has been mentioned in other posts, he will be able to get his body back to 100%. At least he's not leaving to attend another school or pursuing a career in rap music.

After all those knee injuries I really kind of doubt he will ever see the field again.

Look at it for the sake of this kid's future. Is playing college football worth destroying your health anymore at this point? 3 major ACL injuries in about as many years. That's borderline unprecedented. I really would have to think at some point a medical professional would step in and advise him not to play sports anymore. I certainly would love to see him on the field in the future but I really have to wonder if it is the best thing for him at this point.

I certainly wish him the best regardless.

same. i had a high school buddy who was a Mormon and really cool guy. got me a job at the town record store which was awesome in high school. he went on a mission and it really changed his life.

we'll miss the depth but MTM has to do his thing.

In my mind that news is all good.

1) As said by others, it give him a chance to heal. Do you really think that he would be full mission capable this season anyway?
2) Assuming he comes back, he comes back a more mature young man. That can only help in terms of decision making both on and off the field. He will be a great mentor to the rest of the team.
3) If he goes on the mission, he is doing the right things for the right reasons and the added benefit is presumably a stronger, healthier (mentally & physically) team leader on the other end.

Good-good if you ask me.

Obviously because the coaches who recruited him at Boise came to CU while he was on his mission ... and honored their earlier commitment to Davis.

It's a great option for him to be able to do this now.
I think he'll be back, and he'll be stronger, more mature and very focused.

See you in two, MTM.

Best of luck on his decision....but in any event who was actually counting on him to make a contribution this season anyways? Injury's like the ones he had you cannot come back from quickly.

A lot of good things can come of this. He returns more mature and with the fulfillment of one of his life's ambitions. He gets some time to heal the knees, which he really needs right now. He becomes a proof source that CU is willing, able, and capable to deal with the young men who want to fulfill their LDS mission and return to college/football.

I wish you the best MTM. Come back healthier, a better man, and ready to rip some red ass.
