Why the Heck do we use the 40?

Cody Hawkins runs a 4.7. Apparently the other guy, Tyler whats his face....Tyler...Tyler...Hansen! Thats it. He runs a 4.7 forty yard dash too. Yet most analysts agree Hansen is the more athletic QB, with greater game-changing ability through his feet. What exactly is the use of the forty if we completely disregard it when it comes to comparing people and their athleticism?

IMO, for a position like QB 40 time doesn't matter as much as the shuttle drill does since most qbs run sideways and not up-to-down.

Sprinting is just a way to measure athleticism and is a valid, good measure of it, given it's how power output. There is more to athleticism than running fast though and that's what bothers me...when you only see 40 times and you don't see strength numbers or verticals or ....

I think people place way too much stock into 40 times. It's a good way to measure a kids reaction time and quickness, but like NM said, there is much more to a kid than a 40 time.

it's a good measure for db's and wr's (but only one of many measures). The shuttle is much stronger in that it measures change of direction, quickness, start/stop agility, etc.

Don't anyone tell Al Davis though.

It is a pretty good measure for explosiveness and how quickly a guy can reach top-end speed (or near it). The problem is people get a little too carried away with its importance.

For example, while Cody and Hansen may have the same 40 time, anyone whom has watched them play can see Hansen has a better change of direction and looks much more fluid as a runner.

They did the 40s the same day as strength tests. Supposedly Tyler had just done his squat max or something before running his 40 and was really pissed about his time. He's faster than Cody and had been running in the 4.5-4.6 range all winter and spring.

We use the 40 because it's bigger than a can.

I guarantee CHawk is not a 4.7 guy with pads on and game speed is way more important that 40's.
