Who will be our special teams MVP? Good special teams play is traditionally a high priority at CU, but we really took a step back last year in all areas, and it really cost us some games. Need to have better special teams play this season in all areas!

If we'd separate out the kicker/punters and the return guys, it would have been easier for me. I chickened out.

I said "other" - I think Parker Orms will break into the unit and rack up a ton of ST points

I picked fa-la-la-la-Di-la-la-lo.

It would be nice if the return man can fill J-Fly's shoes. But I'm not sure how return duties will be assigned yet. I'm betting that it will be an audition that includes a cast of players.

Picking Goodman or the Buffnickle would be more about wishful thinking than anything else.

Matt gets my vote because he's a known entity.
I'm hoping that he won't be needed very much.:smile2: And over 75% of his punts will pin the opposition inside the 20.

Lockridge could be the guy missing RB reps, and returns would be an excellent way for him to see the open field.

I'm torn, and that's a good thing.

There's a lot of talent in that list.

To me that's the problem. We have talent, and that could lead to special teams performance but we don't have a stand out special teams guy who is obviously the guy. No Jfly, no Crosby, no Ben Kelly. Lot's of potential, but no proven special teams star. That concerns me. Another question mark heading into the season... :sad1:

We forget that Crosby wasn't a "proven special teams star" when he arrived, either. He competed with Kevin Eberhard his freshman year (2003), and Ebherhard was the starter in the first game that season. Crosby wasn't recognized as the Clark Evans of kicking until the 2004 season. Crosby was All American in 2005 and 2006.

CU's Kicking game is still the biggest question for me right now: we have NO idea how this will play out. Where is Jameson's sister when you need an update?

Jenna Jameson?

I always found the MVP of special teams to be a little bit of a back handed complement. If you have a “threat to go all the way” kick returner with a ton of yards, that is probably due to the fact the defense keeps getting scored on. If you have a punter with a big average per kick; its due to the fact the offense can’t move the ball from their side of the field. If the punter has a ton of punts pinning teams inside the 20; that is due to the fact the offense can’t get in scoring position. If the field goal kicker has the most MADE kicks from 40+ yards, the offense stalls out. If the field goal kicker has the most kicks, then the offense just can’t finish when they get in scoring range.

There is only one stat on special teams that is good, and that is punt returns. If you have a P/R who has a ton of returns (defense stops the other team) for a ton of yards (D stopped them in their own territory so they have to do a deep punt) that is good. Every other stat shows where your team is flawed.

That being said I picked Goodman for MVP, with the hope that he wins due to a huge turnaround from last year.

Except for that whole forcing-the-other-team-to-punt thing, which is usually considered a positive.

In the above post I ment kick returner as in "Returning Kick-offs". I was attempting to seperate the two positions.

DiLallo will easily be the most consistent of the kicking unit. But I vote Ray Polk for MVP. Gonna be a monster gunner, returner, whatever's asked of him.

Yeah, it was obvious you were only referring to kickoff returns, but you left out an important category, which extends your last point (regarding punters being the only positive category) to include punt returners, who you left out.

I see punting as a very big thing. You are not always gonna move the ball and when you have a punter that can pin a team in a key situation, that is huge. An example I can think if is Tom Rouen in 1989. He nailed a huge punt that pinned NU at their own 12 yard line with only a minute left.

Agreed. Tressell always makes it a priority to have a good punter. He called the punt "the most important play in football" for good reason. Say what you will about OSU over the past couple of years, but they have won at least their share of their conference title, have been in 2 MNC games and other great bowl games...and they won a title a lot more recently than we have against a great Miami team. I still dislike them, but 10+ win seasons on a very consistent basis shows great coaching.

What about kickoff coverage or blocked punts/field goals?? I think it's a reach to say punt returns are the only positive special teams statistics. VT special teams are near the top every year, and they've been pretty successful over the years.

went with goodman... on pure hope he comes through

I hope your right. But I'm not going to hold my breath with your pick as he stunk it up bad last year to the point that his PAT's and FG attempts looked like he had never kicked in his life.
