Jon Major?

For anyone who has been to practices so far, please provide any info/impressions/observations about Jon Major and where he is fitting in.

Is he still not 100%? Will he ever be 100% Destined for special teams this year? Getting ready to breakout?

Ringo says he's practicing behind Mohler and Smart. That will be tough to break through. I agree that we'll likely see him on special teams this year.

Phew. I was afraid to open this thread in light of recent news.

Having this kind of depth is a good problem to have.

1st post here on allbuffs, but I've been around the block for many, many years, just quit AZ's site and need a new place to go for Buff news. No way in hell I can do netbuffs. So you're stuck with me. And F*CK OFF with any talk that I'm a sunshine pumper or a doom and gloom guy - I've been a CU fan through thick and thin over the past 40 years, but I call it like I see it.

Is it time to declare Major a big disappointment? I know he's behind Mohler and Smart, but I would've guessed 2 years ago that he would be running way ahead of both guys. Smart and Mohler are both good LBs and better people, but the #1 recruit in Colorado last year should be ahead of both of them if he was living up to his ranking. Period.

Welcome. Now get me a beer. And a burrito. Sammiches are for pussies.

I think it's too early to say that. He had knee surgery and missed all of last season. He was held out of spring drills as well.

If he's not in the mix to start by this time next year, then I think you could make that argument, though.

Well, I don't think that you have to worry about folks calling you a sunshine pumper.

:wow::wow::wow:

The idea that Major at this point is a disappointment is laughable. He was just getting back into the swing of things during Spring ball. Also, Mohler was no chump coming out of the JUCO ranks.

We need to remember that most teams are not playing the amount of true and redshirt freshmen we have over the last few years. Expecting every high-profile recruit to be a star right away is unrealistic.

And a sad statement of where our team has been the last few years....

I'd be shocked if Major was ahead of those two at this point as it would say more about Smart and Mohler.

Jeff Smart is a 2 year returning starter. Shaun Mohler was a 4 star JUCO recruit, started most of last season and was arguably our best LB. It is good thing when our 4 or 5 star recruits aren't thrown into the fire immediately or expected to be all big xii players from day 1. Major can develop and be a stud for us next year (When he'll still have 3 years to play).

Welcome, noob!

First, the official welcome.

**** you!

Now, rep. Congrats on finding the best buff site on the web.

Now, beer. And a club sammich on wheat. STAT. (Burritos are acceptable).

I 'm probably being a little hard on Major. It's just that he reminds me of one of the Jonas brothers.

Mohler and Smart are good players. They are not great players. For our defense to be successful this year, we'll need our LB crew to play very, very well. I would have hoped that Major would be turning heads and cracking the 2-deep, because he's allegedly got MAJOR talent (zing!) It's just not happening.

By the way, what is with everyone's obsession with eating sh*t sandiwches?

I'd argue that Mohler and Smart were better than "good" last year. LB is one area where I think we are talented and deep. Now, if Major can run a route and catch a ball, we might have an earlier playing opportunity for him...

I think you'll find that obsessions are kind of an obsession here at Allbuffs. Don't believe me? Do a search for the word "clock."

**** sandwiches like the kind one eats after expressing concern that a redshirt freshman who spent his first year in the program injured isn't progressing?

The dude has got four years to make his impact. He's sitting third in a very deep position behind a 2nd-team All-Big XII linebacker and a JUCO transfer who proved himself a playmaker last season.

You're right though, he does look like he might be the tough member of a boy band (don't think there is such a thing? Three words...Donnie ****ing Wahlberg).

Hey 101.

Here's the 101 on Allbuffs. We have way too many smart asses who are only generous when it comes to pimping their websites and sharing their misguided 'expert' opinions.

What we really need around here are more butlers, car washers, bar tenders and hot skullery wenches.

So shake on over and shine my shoes, wash my truck, serve me a cold coors on draft with an order of fries, and clean up my mess. If your knockers are the right shape, ya just might get a tip.

And lastly, Go Buffs! Welcome aboard. :drink2:

Nahh, more like the SH*T sandwiches people eat when they make statements like Jeff Smart is a 2nd team All-Big 12 LB. If you think he's one of the top 15 LBs in the Big 12, I've got some swampland to sell you in Vail. At the Texas game last year, I remember seeing Sergio Kindle standing next to Jeff Smart in pre-game warm-ups and thinking --- that's why we're in the bottom half of the B12 these days. By the way, Smart wasn't even honorable mention All Big 12 last year.

Look, I like Smart. He plays hard, he hustles, and seems like a good kid. But he's limited physically, largely because he just isn't big enough to play inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He's a serviceable player and a good guy, but if we want to complete for B12 championships, he shouldn't be starting for us.

Jon Major craps bigger than the Jonas brothers.

The guy has had all of about a month's worth of (healthy) practice since leaving high school and he's competing for time with 2 seniors with plenty of game experience. Labeling him a disappointment at this stage is laughable.

I'd love to see him become a dominant force behind the line over the next few years, but give him time.

Last I checked, Jeff Smart had not had mulitiple DUIs and a nasty game of chicken with the side of an apartment building at 2am...I'm not sure I want that guy. We can find great players who are great people as well (see Ryan Miller).

Joe Kane and Steve Lattimer would beg to differ with you...

I remember there was talk when he was recruited that Major might make a good DE - any chance that is still a possibility particularly with Kasa going down?

Personally I want him to stay at LB, but this staff has a history with these kinds of moves.

Smart is no Dizon. That's for sure. He's been caught flatfooted in the wrong position a few times. But lead the team in tackles last season, and is an upper classman who worked his way from walk on to a scholarship starter under Cabral. Smart is the kind of blue collar guy fit's Hawk's mold. Smart may end up as one of the captains this year. Mohler just got better and better as last season progressed. Mohler was a terror in B12 play and might end up leading the team in tackles this year.

There's plenty of opportunity for Major to leave his mark as the season progresses. It's a similar deal with Sipili. I'd like to see both end up playing on Sunday. But I want to see them play before beating the drum to see them start. The fact they are pushing Smart and Mohler improves the quality of the squad.

I remember that as well. Will be interesting to see if they consider that option.

Major is a LB all the way IMO. That is where he should be.

Again, expecting Major to be a star right away after the injury last year is totally unfair. You will get to see him plenty next year as a freaking sophomore. But go ahead and bury the guy if you want because he has had about one month of practice time being nearly full strength.

Didn't you say a few months ago on AZ's site that you thought Smart was our best inside backer? What happened since then?

Or did I just miss the sarcasm?

Hmm. How far are we allowed to go in discussing guys on the team? I mean in discussing them "in a negative" way?
