depth chart and pipeline...

one thing about hawk and company, while we still have some big gaps, have you notice the way that they have methodically improved our pipeline issues?

they are doing a very good job at that, mostly. and, i see talent upgrades occurring all across the board... if they can win this year and therefore have a good to very good recruiting class, the table may be set for a return to actually being competitive again.

What do you mean by pipeline issues? I certainly don't see a pipeline into Texas.

by pipeline, i mean a concerted effort to make sure you have guys in the program at every position who are seniors, juniors, sophs, etc. there are still some big gaps--- especially at wideout... but, if you can bring guys into the program and let them develop, you've got a better shot at sustained goodness.

This was a big issue for Hawk when he came in and he mentioned it on several occassions. It does seem that we're improving there, although I still would like some depth at DL and WR. Those are two glaring exceptions to the rule.

Essentially, we can then stop recruiting for immediate needs and you start addressing each class with balance. No more classes with 7 O-Linemen or 3 RB's. Sign 22 position players every year and have them all redshirt. When we get to the point where the 2 deep is almost all upperclassmen and all Freshmen are redshirting as a general rule, we will have FIXED IT. We are much closer to that point than the last 4 years (maybe 10?) for sure!

I agree... he's building depth across the board which is good. I think 'pipeline' has a dual meaning here. We are building depth and we need to continue to build the pipeline into key recruiting hotbeds (i.e. tx, ca, fl..)

Hawk has made great stride addressing many of the depth issues. O line has been shored up. With everyone healthy things look great for this year.

RB looks promising with everyone healthy.

I don't think he has done enough with many of the other spots. Including WR, D Line, and I'm not sold on the secondary until I see them play in games.

One big issue we have had with depth the last few years is guys transfering, or failing classes.

It is hard to recruit for needs, only to have people leave the school after LOI day has come and gone.

Where are you seeing a pipleine? I know that Adam posts on on Rivals occasionally, but I am not finding one now.

Not sure about the pipeline, but WR looks nice for next year:
Simmons
Simas
Clemons
Mcknight
Jefferson
Ussery
Darden

Add in Espy and some of the other walk-ons, looks pretty good to me.

You've forgotten Celestine.

Good point...

I was thinking the same thing. That basically we're pretty thin there this year, but next year our offense is going to be sick. Simmons and Scotty will be SRs in 2010, with Simas & Clemons as Jrs. All the rest, including Celestine (assuming he comes back) will be Sophmores or younger. That's pretty good, IMO. Too bad we won't have Clemons this year. Damn transfer rules.

Simmons, still not confirmed in by the AD

Simas has not seen game PT and already had problems in the classroom. I can only hope it does not happen again.

Clemons is out this year due to transfer. Who know how good he will be.

However you look at it we are thin this year, and unless some young guys step up, nothing is certain for next year.
