Is it time to rethink our expectations for CU football?

First of all, I didn't catch the game because the weather system is giving me headaches...perhaps God didn't want me to throw stuff at the TV.

On to what this topic is all about:

A bunch of us watched the 1990 National Championship team including myself and most of us got spoiled with the success of CU being one of the best teams in the nation at the time. Now those days seem much further away after losing to CSU today. I know it is just one game but did you guys watch the other North teams yesterday especially Missouri? It looks like MU hasn't lost a step as a program and I have told myself that if MU manages to contend for the North title and make the Big 12 CCG again, MU firmly establishes itself as the North power. KU will do anything to keep up with MU and while I hate to admit it, NU's future looks brighter than ours.

The way I see it realistically, we are in the same group as ISU and KSU and possibly for sometime assuming that CU gives Coach Hawk the pink slip after this season.

Look at TT...about a few years to five years ago, they were the type of team that everyone cheered for because they usually were the underdog against the likes of UT, OU, and A&M. Now TT is one of the top South teams. What I'm saying is that if we manage to have a winning season with a bowl game this season, we shouldn't get rid of Coach Hawk unless we don't see any signs of hope for next year.

Instead of contending for North titles, we should be happy with winning seasons and bowl apperances. It's a far cry from when winning the Big 8 was the way we measured success for the Buffs but it's still a successful season.

I think every game on our schedule is a possible loss, not saying we'll lose them all, just saying its very possible.

Two things.

First -- this isn't 1989/1990. OU and OSU were damn near on the death penalty in 1989/1990 - and there was exactly ONE team worth a crap in the Big 8. Nebraska.

Two -- I don't care who is coaching at CU, the football program isn't going to be competitive with OU, Texas, Nebraska, etc.

If I was the AD - I would do the following:

#1 - Hire a coach the fans / boosters / etc. will 100% get behind. When you get those boosters behind the hire, you tell them, "you give this guy 5 years or you give him nothing."

#2 - Ditch this outrageous non conference schedule. I don't care if they have to get a 2nd mortgage on Dal Ward. Dump these BCS opponents unless they are the likes of Vanderbilt, Stanford, Indiana, etc. Since we're already locked into this ridiculous "Rocky Mountain Showdown" I'd be loading up on home games against I-AA teams, etc.

This is why your not AD.

That said, we have run out of has been coaches and former assistants to prop up at the podium. Were stuck. Its sucks. And there isn't much we can do about it.

probably time for a new staff... not time to lower expectations.

if Mac can do it, someone else can, current obstacles noted.

F this thread!

Expectations are too low already. I'm sick of reading posts from people saying they'd be happy if we just went to a bowl game this year. Or wouldn't it be great if we could make it to the Alamo or, dare I dream it, the Holiday bowl.

Here's what I expect from Colorado Buffaloes football:

Top 25 recruiting class every year
Top 25 ranking in the polls every year
Average of 9 wins per year w/ a bowl game
Big 12 North championship every other year
2 or 3 Big 12 championship every decade
1 or 2 national title runs a decade

If the current coach can't deliver that, I want one who can.

I don't mind Toledo and Wyoming instead of substituting I-AA teams. West Virginia is a good test for the one big OOC game we schedule a year, and as long as we don't do something like add a Miami, ASU or FSU on top of that it's okay. Scheduling teams from the Championship Subdivision would only pad the stats of the current coaching regime. If they want to schedule one a year that's fine as it will count toward bowl eligibility. But go 1-1 against those teams in the last four years and almost have that record 0-2 doesn't make things any better. I'll take a loss to a determined, well-coached CSU team over the Big Sky any day. And padding our win total to become bowl eligible only makes it worse when we get humiliated in a bowl against a team that deserves to be there.

That is right, if the current guy isn't doing it, then bring in someone who can!

College football is primarily about 5 things. Those five things, in no particular order are:

1. Money
2. Money
3. Money
4. Money

and

5. Money

And the truth is, CU doesn't have enough of it. We've been leap-froged by the likes of KU and Mizzou for facilities. We don't have enough money to hire/retain top notch assistants, let alone head coaches.

That's not to say we shouldn't have expectations. We should certainly expect better than what we saw tonight. And for that matter, we should expect better than what we've seen under Hawkins for the most part, IMO.

But we have no chance of being a national title contender any time soon. Those who think we should be, are living in a 20-year-old dream world. There's just no other way to put it.

I'm relatively young and didn't grow up around here in the Crowder or Mac days, but it was still a nationally prominent and respectable program when I caught on during Neuheisel's tenure. Expectations of top recruiting classes and multiple top 25 finishes each decade should not be unreasonable, yet here this program is, ignored by college football fans nationally and a punchline and write-off to the Big 12 South. There are plenty of colleges with an attractive setting and more to the surroundings than football, at colleges with tougher academic standards. They manage to be pretty good at football still. Look at Wisconsin, Cal, even Stanford lately. I think first the school needs to be in a better financial situation, with more state and citizen and STUDENT support of the football program, and then maybe better recruits and coaches can coaxed back in and those expectations can once again be met.

Money... Yeah, and for what I paid tonight to go to this game was outrageous. $130 for two tix to sit on bleachers. Waited in line for 10 minutes to pee in a trough. Don't get me wrong, I had a great time today, but with parking, my sandwich at Whichwich, and a CU shirt for my wife, I spent well over $200 for two people to watch a game from the endzone. I would love to go again but I am not paying that much to see this crap that I saw tonight. Call me cheap or fair-weather, but if they want big bucks they need to provide a product that is worth that much money.

I don't think it's a matter of KU or Mizzou having more money, I think it's a matter of those schools administrations being willing to commit the money to the football program.

CU has money it just hasn't been willing to commit to being a contender. Also, I recall there being a bit of a mini-scandal about Elizabeth Hoffman taking limousine rides to CU games and leaving the limo running awhile back. So I don't think anyone should be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when they talk about fiscal limitations.

But Miami, ASU, and FSU no longer leave many teams shaking in their boots. Except us I guess.

Exactly. Except possibly ASU, we're still a touchdown-plus dog against those guys. 0-6 this decade.

The fans the players play for would not express those sentiments about the cost of supporting the team.

CU is living within its means. Just the way it is.

They might be living within their means, but my point was they don't have enough to compete with the Texas's, OUs, USCs, and now Oklahoma States of the college football world....

CU's athletic department may not have a lot of money - but CU's football team should still beat the dog**** out of teams like CSU, Toledo, Wyoming, Iowa State, Kansas, etc.

Wins generate money like nothing else will.

This day and age, you need wins, even if you have to pay a staff to get them.

Without the wins and hope you can lose boosters and season ticket holders.

What this university fails to understand is you don't gouge your loyal fans for more and more money. ( I.E. A ticket price increase during a depression) You grow a manic fan base that perpetuates itself by lowering ticket costs and marketing to expand your fan base.

:iagree:

There is no reason why CU cannot be a regular contender for a BCS bowl game and play every year in at least a decent bowl game.

Yes our facilities have been passed up and need major improvements but the roster is littered with guys who could have gone to their choice of other places and selected Boulder instead. Scott, Polk, Miller, Givens, Kasa, Deehan, Major, Mohler, MTM, etc. etc. are all guys who had multiple offers to top end BCS conference schools. Boulder offers some things that no other school in the country can offer no matter how much they put into facilities. Add to that a good game (i.e. not last night) in folsom is a great experience with Ralphie running and the fans almost on top of the field. Players will come here. Improve facilities and more players will come here but we are getting players now even the way it is.

We need to bring somebody in here who will get the ball rolling, no more losses to CSU, Montana State, ISU, Baylor. No more confusion on the sideline with the best talent sitting while coaches favorites play.

Win some big games plus the ones you are supposed to and the money will follow. People are willing to pay good money to sit in Folsom and watch a winner, they did it for Mac, for Slick Rick before he left, and even for Barnett when things were good.

A winning CU team is also popular on TV. More national games (meaning games that count) mean more national payouts, meaning more big money. When CU become the focus of attention because they are winning, because the stadium is full and games are on national TV, because people feel good about them then the other revenue streams pick up like in stadium advertising, team sponsorships, and yes donations.

We will never be the revenue generators that Texas, Michigan, LSU, etc. are or even match Nebraska, Penn State, or Georgia. We also didn't match them in the years that Mac was finishing in the top ten almost every year and we were still successfull.

We already have higher revenues that a lot of the teams who are doing much better than we are on the field.

Desert Dawg you are completely correct, the answer is not to scale back expectations it is to move them up and win. Do that and the rest takes care of itself.

Please elaborate on how lowering ticket prices for a game that kicked off with approx. 500 unsold tickets is going to generate more money by expanding the fan base??

How many Buff games do you look out and see almost empty sections in the upper level south end zone? All but CSU and NU. I think affordable prices could generate new non-graduate fans that enjoy football.

Many states get the same support for the collage teams as they do their pro teams. I don’t think that can be said for Colorado. Other states enjoy state wide pride and support and enjoy relationships with the local media that works to increase positive interest in their programs.

I would rather the program lose a few bucks if it means they can sell out more games. Ppl in stands more oftne means better fans means more long term $.

I know two tix that went unused. My friend and his wife were going, baby sitter got sick so they were going to take the 1 year old. Until the found out the 1 year old need her own ticket.

Not a very good policy.

It's a sad day when football in Kansas and Mizzou matters and Colorado's not even mentioned in the same sentence as those two schools. Have we really fallen that far, we've become the K-State of the early 90's the laugh of the conference.
