I am embarrassed to be a CU fan

Everything that should be said about the game and the mind-boggling decisions of the coaching staff and anything associated with their actions has been said and really doesn't need much more saying other than to Bohn and anyone with any say who will listen.

No, this post is going to be more about the state of our pathetic fan base and the pathetic support CU gives to the football team. Our fans, the student section, in particular, are just pathetic. I cheer my ass off yelling every goddamn play and instead of joining in, half of the dimwits around me in the student section give me a dirty look. Is it any surprise that these clowns had no clue who Andre Simmons is (apparently the coaching staff don't either)? It also is disgraceful the we, the students, act on the way into and during games. I and many around me nearly got crushed into the metal fencing because so many drunken idiots think it's a good idea to push in the line. Now, this could happen anywhere with large crowds and alcohol involved, but I think that's the point. Rather than seeing alcohol as an aide to game enjoyment (I certainly drink before games and will be drowning my sorrows afterwards all season if today is much to go by), our student section sees it as an excuse to get in fights and act like spoiled brats. Of course, the majority of these trust-fund idiots are from out of state and couldn't care less about the actual results or the team on the field (disclaimer: I'm an out of stater who is very passionate about the Buffs). They just want to yell **** 'em up and get drunk. Sorry guys, but this is the Big 12, not some Atlantic 10 garbage. We need all the support we can get but I have no desire to have both my game enjoyment dragged down along with our reputation because of some people who are really no better than soccer hooligans.

Part of this lies with the administration though. Everyone wants to sit in the student section and I don't blame them. It is generally a good atmosphere in spite of the hooliganesque clowns and certainly better than the many alumni who sit on their hands all game. However, there are clearly far too many people allowed into the student section who are clearly not CU students. Is this a big deal for your average game? No, because the same clowns causing trouble today will be the one's whose seats are empty for our conference games. That said, would it really be that difficult for a security guard to not let people into the CU Student Section wearing CSU gear? I know Cal, for example, issues wristbands to the students so that only actual students can sit in the student section and everyone with a ticket manages to find a place, unlike the absurd situation we had for the entire first half today with half of CU students wandering aimlessly up and down the aisles (thanks to showing up typically late) finding nowhere to sit/stand. This is pretty minor stuff in the scheme of things, although it should be noted that between the entrance and the seating situation, CU is headed for a human catastrophe in the near future if they don't take any steps to remedy the problems.

Ultimately though, it's symptomatic of a complete lack of planning and even further a disregard and probable disdain for the football program and all that which surrounds it. Growing up a Cal fan, I didn't think it was possible for a university to support its football team less, but I think I can safely say CU has managed to achieve that (and Cal has improved significantly in that regard).

I am very sad to write this message because I love CU very much. Starting out here in 2005 (5th year senior now), I'm glad I got to see a winning season and something resembling a football team for a year. In these 5 years I have become quite passionate about CU football and will always love the Buffs but we are not going to win anything until this administration realizes the value of the football team to the school, both financially and academically. We can hire whoever we like to replace this joke of a head coach, but whoever that is better get some damn support Gordon Gee-style. And speaking of HCs, I don't give a flying f*ck who it is as long as they return the Buffs to something other than a national laughingstock. If that means it's a former Buff who knows what it takes and what CU is about like Bieniemy, great. If it means it's a former Husker like Turner Gill, I don't care just so long as I see our Buffs win. I'll get behind whomever we get, so long as they don't do/say anything stupid right from the start, Schnellenberger-style.

Sorry for the stream of consciousness rant. Hopefully some of that made sense to someone out there. Go Buffs!

10 is the key number. If we can find a way to lose 10 games, the opposite of Hawkins prediction for this season, perhaps we can move in a new directions with a new staff and new recruits. We are years away from being anything again.

Yes, certainly one game does not make a season. As has been said in other threads, the inability to make adjustments and come up with a coherent game plan is the most troublesome as a Buff fan. It's the actions of the university and a largely apathetic fan base that make me embarrassed, although the feelings of embarrassment are certainly not helped by the coaching staff and on field performance.

The basketball program is the real disgrace, indeed. If there is any sport where you can turn a program around immediately with a couple of big recruits it's basketball. I'd take the Beasley-Walker K State one and done over anything we have right now. Maybe Bzzz needs time to implement his system and get the right guys, but really the Princeton offense and his variations on it are not rocket science. You need sharp shooters who can stretch the defense and we currently have exactly 0 players I would even describe as good shooters. How can someone who was able to succeed at Air Force with all of their height restrictions and turn them into a decent tournament team be so poor at CU? The administration is really the first one to point fingers at as they just don't get it.

I am not embarrassed at all, yes the loss was bad, but at the same time, if McKnight hangs on to the football on that illegal hit we probably score and probably even end up winning that game. We just dug too huge a hole. Now do not get me wrong, the gameplan sucked and we were lethargic but we did outplay them in the second half. I was not embarrassed because the university as a whole did maintain its composure in an ugly loss.

Coach B has a tough job and I'm willingly to give him more time than Hawk just because of circumstances due to letting Patton hang around far too long and our complete lack of a winning history in basketball.

The disdain for collegiate athletics by the administration which sees sports as beneath them is a complete joke when you consider our academic reputation. Yes, you can get a good education at CU but ultimately we are not a top level academic institution, either. Just look at the admissions standards for a start. Of course, with a half decent football team, we would obviously have better students but this is preaching to the choir as I'm sure all of you get it when it comes to the connection between good sports and improved academics.

Indeed. As I said before, I grew up in Northern California and was raised as a Cal fan so administrative disdain is nothing new for me. What's incredible, though, is that CU is so much worse than Cal in this regard. Berkeley certainly has some reason to be arrogant about their academics and yet they manage to find ways to get JC transfers and Desean Jackson types into their school. I think Cal has gotten a lot better about this under Tedford, but it just boggles the mind.

This is true to a large extent, although I think we can also agree that Boulder is a special town in a beautiful setting with close proximity to both a major city and to tons of outdoor activities. I wouldn't trade my experience at CU for anything in the world, although this also does not prevent me from wanting to improve the CU experience for future Buffs and for my own personal enjoyment as well.

Want to know why our students "aren't good fans?" Want to know why they boo and aren't cheering at games?

Because the team is not good. It has not been good for years. This is my sixth year going to games at folsom and I have never once, except for a brief period in 2005, seen a good team on the field.

I have seen loss after loss after loss and poor coaching followed by more poor coaching.

You want the students to cheer? Win some games.

You want them to care? Stop being bad all the damn time.

Folsom was sold out well in advance for a team that had its 3rd consecutive losing season last year. The stadium was overfull. What more do you want? The reason why this team is in the shape it is in has nothing to do with the fans and everything to do with the bad head coach and the used car salesman politician AD.

So why is it Washington fans can show up and cheer enough to constantly make the camera shake on TV against LSU following an 0-12 season but our fans are too apathetic to give a **** against an in-state rival and when we do yell (**** em up) we do so regardless of the situation including when we have the ball? The sad thing is if we had managed to come back and win, these same clueless idiots would probably have rushed the field.

Most CU students are not knowledgeable about CU football, I will give you that.

They are there to party, not for the game.

I think this would change if the team was better. As it stands, most of these kids probably either don't care about cfb or still cheer for whatever team they were fans of at home (USC, Texas, whatever).

first off, you probably are majoring in communications or sociology. CU is a pretty top flight school for all of the sciences.

2nd off, cal has loyal students because they have a running back who I am sure averages more than 100 yards a game. AND THEY DONT SUCK.

I'm a finance major but your point stands. And yes, growing up a Cal fan in the 90s, I certainly remember the 30,000 crowds that would show up to watch the Tom Holmoe-coached teams get their weekly beatdowns. Hawkins has been an utter failure and the sooner he is fired, the better so that we might actually be able to salvage a top 50 recruiting class. But our fans are still lackluster at best and our administration is a laughingstock.

Amen brother... I hate CU's student section, but I'm not embarrassed to be a Buff. Being embarrassed of some fans is one thing, but that doesn't represent a football program.
