Serious candidates

For one thread, would it be possible to discuss some serious coaching candidates for the CU head coaching position that many people anticipate will open at the conclusion of the season? Here are a few I can think of, off the top of my head.

Turner Gill
Former Husker player, long time Nebraska assistant coach
Currently Coaching at Buffalo
15-23 record as Buffalo Head Coach
Won Mid-American Athletic Conference Championship in 2008
Might be worth watching this season

Ken Niumatalolo
Former Hawaii football player, long time Navy assistant coach
Currently Navy head coach
8-6 record as Navy head coach
Has good ties to a key recruiting area
Long time tenure at Navy might be good preparation for rigors associated with coaching at Colorado
Recruiting ability is questionable
Ability to sustain long term success questionable

Paul Johnson
Currently Georgia Tech head coach
Previously Navy head coach
45-29 at Navy
9-4 in 1st season at Georgia Tech
Offense is something Buff fans would love to see
Probably a costly coach to consider
ACC much easier conference than Big 12

Greg Schiano
Currently Rutgers head coach
46-51 record at Rutgers
Has taken Rutgers to 4 straight bowl games
Probably a costly coach to consider
Big East much easier than Big 12

Bill Young
Currently Oklahoma State Defensive Coordinator
Has previously worked as DC at Oklahoma, Kansas, Miami
Defenses win championships
Affordable
Familiar with Big 12 conference

Eric Bienemy
Currently Minnesota Vikings RB coach
Has previously worked as RB coach at CU, as well as UCLA
Recruiting whiz
Energetic / motivated
No head coaching or coordinator experience
Affordable
Popular with boosters / alums
Familiar with CU / Conference

Jon Embree
Currently Kansas City Chiefs TE coach
Has previously worked as TE / DE coach at CU, as well as UCLA
No head coaching or coordinator experience
Affordable
Popular with boosters / alums
Familiar with CU / Conference

Tommy Tuberville
Currently out of a job.
Has enough money from his buyout to be affordable since a job is better than no job.
Has SEC experience and great success.
Can open up SEC country in recruiting.
Will have an easier time at CU than he had at Auburn with their boosters.

I think you can probably cross Johnson and Sciano off the list as serious candidates.

Johnson looks to be building something nice at GT. He has the luxury of being in the middle of the dirty south and having access to all that talent, yet he doesn't have to go through the SEC gauntlet every year. If they make similar strides this year as they did last year, they should be an ACC favorite/contender most years.

Sciano already turned down a couple pretty decent jobs to stay at Rutgers. Not saying he wouldn't leave Rutgers if they have a good season, but I'm saying, he wouldn't leave Rutgers to come here if they have a good season. If they have a bad season in the Big Least, you question whether he's that great of a coach. You also question whether he could succeed here when so much of his recruiting success is based entirely on keeping NJ talent in state.

Turner Gill is not a serious canidate

he just signed an extension this past offseason

I have to think that if a Big 12 school came calling, he would consider leaving Buffalo, contract extension or not.

From what I've been able to find online, Gill's salary at Buffalo is less than $500,000 per year, including incentives.

well he was offered by Auburn last offseason..

im just saying.. he seems to really love UB, and i just dont see him leaving

I'm not saying your wrong, but I think he has higher aspirations than the university of Buffalo. But I've been wrong before. :smile2:

Wow. You've been putting some serious thought into this. Rep sent.

You are the one and only person I have ever seen say that Gill was "offered" the Auburn job.

I have seen a lot of commentary that he SHOULD HAVE BEEN OFFERED the Auburn job.. Charles Barkley comes to mind..

Turner Gill - I like the idea but I don't think he's a serious candidate

Ken Niumatalolo - Who knows? This falls under the anyone would be better than hawk category.

Paul Johnson - Just picture the look on his face if Bohn made him an offer.

Greg Schiano - He turned down the "U". Why would he leave sopranoland for Boulder now?

Bill Young - Probably would be an upgrade if he was willing.

Eric Bienemy - I don't think this would ever happen. I'd rather see Karl Dorell come back.

Jon Embree - Sure, why not?

Brian Cabral - He's paid his dues.

Shawn Watson - Umm... on second thought.

Troy Calhoun - This would be my pick

Maybe we could have a coach 'grouping'. I hear it works really well for the running backs and wide receivers.

I would love Johnson, but I think Wispy's right that it's not a move he's going to make. Same with Sciano...

Young is intriguing to me. Niumatalolo too, although I'll admit I don't know that much about him.

Another thought I've had is Nick Holt. Former USC DC, now assistant HC at Washington under Sarkisian. He did have a couple years as HC at Idaho that weren't exactly great, but he has been a successful coordinator for a big time program.

Any particular reason Venables isn't on this list?

All those guys are washed up no-names except for Bieniemy. He is the only one who isn't a re-tread and has by far, the most potential on that list.

what about Philip Fulmer....I also like the idea with Tommy Tuberville both of these coaches have strong SEC recruiting ties

I see/hear about Venables every single day. He doesn't impress me that much for some reason. OU recruits 5-star athletes to play all over the defense, so the fact that they are good most years is not that amazing to me. I think Bob Stoops still plays a big hand in OU's defense.

Still -- most of Bob Stoops' coaches (Chuck Long excluded) have gone on to be fairly successful.

I would not be opposed. He would be a radical departure from anything CU has brought in.

i dont think we can afford either of them

well that is just the problem, if we cant afford them then we are just back to square one by replacing Hawk with a low budget coach.....never know what the boosters will do when these kind of names come up

Yeah, Paul Johnson, Bill Young and Greg Schiano are washed up no-names, but Eric Bieniemy is the hottest young coaching prospect in the game....:lol:

Seriously, I loved EB as a player too. Just like I loved Hagan as a player. Or Alfred Williams. Or Dave Logan. That doesn't mean that any of them are necessarily the best person for this job right now. Let's try looking at this realistically....

And given that fact - I think Bohn is forced to go with a CU guy. Cheap. Certainly questionable as to what type of success they will have. But wildly popular with boosters / alums.

Maybe if we ask coach Mac nicely he'd consider coming back? He's been out of coaching for 15 years but he's still twice the coach that bill snyder ever was. I know... it's ridiculous of course but the pickings are pretty slim.

Tubberville? Fulmer? Seriously those guys wouldn't mesh well at all with Boulder imo

WOW guy has one hell of a resume....has been around some of the greatest coaches, and all in different conf.....I like this one
I remember going to practices and hearing him from the other side of the field going crazy over a big hit. He's a real fiery guy. I know Coach Mac would approve.

If the fans want a fired up coach with CU connections I'd go with Chuck Heater. He's the asst. D Coordinator at UF and a former asst under coach Mac. He's a great recruiter and with great connections.

Thoughts like this are why you are the MVP of Allbuffs...

I'd lost track of where Heater was or everything he's done. Frankly I'd like somebody with at least coordinator experience, but there is anybody who could bring some fire back to CU football, get us back on the recruiting map and connect to some top flight assistants, it might just be Heater...

I might get neg repped for this but CU needs to take a cue from kNU and make a Pelini style hire. Hiring Pelini is the best thing that happened to kNU since Osbourne left. I think Heater fits the bill.
