Hawks biggest problem

CU fans' expectations were simply too high. He did nothing to temper those expectations. In fact, he has gone the opposite way with his "ten wins, no excuses" mantra. In the past, we've accepted a loss here or there to CSU as one of those things that just happens from time to time. We don't like it, and we certainly don't want it to become commonplace, but by and large, we understand that these things happen. Had Hawk not kept telling us how awesome we were going to be, and that this was the year they were going to put it all together, and blah, blah, blah, he wouldn't be getting barbecued the way he is right now. Honestly, why would we expect to play any better than we did last year? We sucked last year, too.

I don't think I necessarily agree that our expectations were too high. We were only going on what we were being told by the coaches. We are going to have a solid O line and a offensive scheme that is focused on running the ball. We are going to have the best possible QB (which still might be true) and our secondary is going to be stout. You put this formula together with solid coaching and regardless, you beat CSU. Our expectations were right in line. We were duped...thus far....

Expecting to beat CSU and have occasional winning seasons is not unrealistic.

No, it's not. In fact, it's completely realistic. The problem is that we expected to do a lot more than simply beat CSU. We expected to annihilate them. We expected to walk all over them on the way to beating the snot out of Toledo on Friday, then Wyoming the week after that. Most of us thought the WVA game would be difficult, but not impossible. We viewed that game as a watershed for Hawk to show that he's really turned the corner. The CSU game was supposed to be little more than a scrimmage.

Well, he's turned a corner all right. Just not the one we all thought he was turning. :sad1:

Exactly. That's why I think this loss pisses me and most of us off. I was overly confident we would wipe the floor with CSU. So when I was dealt the surprise of a loss it was painful.

I'll admit my expectations were higher than last year, but that was mainly based on the assumption that our team which was fairly inexperienced & young last year would have grown up and shown some decent growth with the extra year of preparation.....

The big kick in the nuts to me was that this simple expectation was not even met, since this team took a giant step back from last year....which means that unless this game was a complete fluke this team won't meet even the lowest of expectations

We had a freshman/sophomore DLine going against a veteran squad. I made the mistake of buying into our "athleticism." But there is no substitute for experience. Same goes for our O line. Thing is, they had better improve very fast, or this season will turn into a disaster.

That sounds an awful lot like an excuse to me. "Ten wins, no excuses".

I don't give a rip how young our O line is or how experienced CSU's was. The simple fact of the matter is that we should be better than them. Or should we? I'm beginning to wonder. If we're not as good as CSU, what teams on our schedule are we as good as?

oh, you should definitely watch it. then you'll understand why an apparent large majority of fans are calling for a head to roll.

:sad2:

who's head should be rolling? mine would roll quite nicely... no hair to stop the momentum.... now Manny's on the other hand.... that wouldn't roll at all!

We expected to see something different than we saw last year. Last year it was injuries, and this, and that, and excuses. This was going to be THE YEAR. Players coming back, players with experience, a new offensive philosophy. Downhill running.

We saw the exact same coaching we saw last year. And the year before... and the year before.....

The "we're young" excuse has worn out its welcome. He is in his 4th year and we're still talking about inexperience all over the place. **** that.

the thing is he seems to never have this team ready to play, not prepared at all for the game. our offense just picked up were they left off from last yr, 17 points, very predictable, same play over and over, never little hawks fault...just need to "work on the little things"....blah, blah, blah....coach hawk just says the right thing to keep us excited

I dunno Sacky. I certainly wasn't expecting a blowout on Sunday. I never do against CSU anymore. They've known they can beat us for 10 years now. Most reasonable posters on here felt Toledo was a trap game, but still should win.

I, and most everyone else it seems, weren't expecting us to get our asses kicked on our own home field....... by CSU. Didn't expect to have to watch lamb fans rush our own damn field and watch them stomp on our logo. Didn't expect to see Scott get only one carry..... and on and on... etc. This all on national tv.

I do agree that we can drink too much Kool-Aid and get carried away with our predictions, especially in the offseason.

So what is the possibility the players are hearing on the radio, TV, on-line, and reading press clippings in the local rags, exhalting how good they are supposed to be? This kind of stuff can get into a kids head and ruin their focus. So maybe, just maybe they get their heads handed to them now so if they read that sort of thing later, they will see right thru it and remain focused better the rest of the season. Then again, maybe I've had too much of the Kool Aid?

Sacky is right. But not only did he not set proper expectations with fans but the players believed it too. Meanwhile, Fairchild was knocking his team and making them feel inadequate.

Here's where he could have done things differently.

We are going to be committed to the run. Solder is a big guy, but still learning. Miller is a big guy, but hasn't played guard before. We will have three new players at the other O-Line positions who've never played a down. We see a lot of promise and we hope to improve each game. It may be a little rough of the blocks, but we will improve every game and we now have some depth so if we see some injuries, we should be ok.

At WR, we are woefully inexperienced. we got some new guys who can help us, but these first few games are going to be a challenge.

instead, the press told us how great the "downhill game would be" and Hawk never corrected that. Puzzling.....

Hawk's problem is the "culture" he and bohn love to brag about being in place is a "culture of losing". He doesn't have to act like a maniac after a loss but damn, what's with all the smiling and laughing?

Coaches and players used to get pi$$ed after losses and hold themselves accountable and demand of themselves to fix it. Not with this regime, it's the ho-hum flush it away, everything will magically fall into place next week.

The attitude is a big problem.

I think our expectations were high much due to the sunshine being pumped out of Boulder. Yes, I was one that was so looking forward to this game... looking forward to the big breakout to begin.

For me the problem was not the loss. The problem was that I still looked at the performance and was left wondering why... why... why.

Why, no "down hill" run game... especially with 4th &1?

Why, no lead blocking?

Why abandon the running game so soon?

Why are we switching running backs on seemingly every play? Is Summler really better than Scott or Stewart?

Why is DS good enough to return kicks out to near the 40 and not take more than 1 hand off?

Do you remember similar "whys" from last year? We didn't make a turn for the better or worse... just the same old same old.

That's a huge understatement. And to top it off, "we" criticize Buff fans who's expectations and predictions are tempered.

This is literally the exact same **** from last year. Nothing has changed. At all.

The way I see it he has got 2 choices. He can quit now and pursue his dream of becoming a motivational speaker (in a van down by the river). Or we can fire his ass and watch him take a page out of Frank Solich's book, showing up in the stands and various ballgames so he can "better learn the game". That will at least insure him of landing another HC job at a **** school.

Expecting a fairly easy win over a middle-of-the-road MWC team is hardly getting carried away, especially after we did just that a year ago on a neutral field.

Idaho St. got beat 50-3 and had 37 yds offense. Those expectations/results would be perfect for Hack. I don't suppose he still owns a home there does he?

First off, there is no excuse for this Buffalo team to lose to this CSU team. In an honest evaluation CSU has better athletes at maybe 3-4 positions on the field. This Buff team came in unprepared and unmotivated. We had no coherent plan and failed to take advantage of our advantages in talent. In the running game our most talented backs were on the bench while our fourth best back, the most limited athletically was trying to run wide plays ill suited for his talents. Our O-line, again bigger and more athletic gave the advantage to the CSU D-line by trying to play a finesse lateral movement game instead of just hitting them in the mouth until they stopped fighting it.

We couldn't get a play called in time, had no rythem on O because of a lack of a consistent plan and the chinese fire drill substitutions.

That said Fairchild took full advantage of his one major advantage, experience. He had a first year starter at QB but a guy who was a fifth year senior. He let him make throws that were suited to his talents and set those throws up with a power running game and a variety of shorter passes intended to move the D where he wanted it to be. His O-line was not asked to be athletic but rather again he used them to do what they are best at, quick hits up the middle and influence plays often on a quick count to take advantage of the Buffs confusion on D.

I am bitterly disapointed in the result of this game and Hawk had better get his act together quickly because his time may be running out if he doesn't. The big games he has won or almost won (OU, WVU, Georgia, etc.) are not enough to cover for disasters against teams we should be running out of the stadium like CSU, Montana State, Eastern Washington, Baylor, ISU.

That all said this is still basically a half a team. In that respect we have virtually no seniors and few juniors playing key rolls.
The O-line started three players in their first real collegiate action including a RS Frosh, three Soph (one of whom has played much) and a Junior in his second year at the position.
No senior WRs, one jr who was a walk-on another jr who just got here from JC, a soph walk-on converted DB, another Soph converted DB, and a true FR.

D-line one returning starter, no seniors, RS frosh, true Soph, backed up by true Fr and soph. DBs young

The only significant Seniors are at ILB and TE.

We have recruited some very good players but they still take time to develop, I only question is Hawk is the right guy to develop them since the team seems to keep making the same mistakes year after year.

Hawk did a great job at Boise, the people who try to take that away from him are making things up. Unfortunately what worked at Boise doesn't work on a consistent basis at a Big XII school. The teams the Buffs play are either gunning for them because they have a change to gain credibility (CSU, Toledo, Wyo) or have to good of athletes to get beat by gimmicks and WAC think (WVU, the confernce opponents.
