Daily Camera WR article

http://www.buffzone.com/football/ci_13399214
Two things strike me with this article:
1. DAMAGE CONTROL
2. Poor Coaching – A good teacher makes a subject easier to understand. Coaches need to adapt schemes to fit the strengths of their team. Sometimes simpler is better.

So when the WR's THEMSELVES say he has some catching to do, we still don't believe it?

"Starting like a week before the CSU game and trying to catch on to the offense that fast is kind of hard," Simmons said. "I mean, as the weeks and days go by, I catch on to everything. It`s been pretty rough, but I`m picking it up. This bye week right here will give me a better chance to take more in."

or

Clemons said it has been a relatively smooth transition for him because he played in a very similar system at Michigan as a true freshman before that school made a coaching change, which led to a spread offense that Clemons said was much more basic but didn`t suit him.
Clemons said he wishes he could play this season instead of having to sit out because of NCAA transfer rules. He recognizes the opportunity for a playmaker who understands the system. But he said he understands why the players who have been on the field this season are out there. He also has empathy for Simmons who is drinking from a fire hose as former CU coach Gary Barnett used to say.

Hmmmm. Clemons played in a similar system in Michigan? According to some on here, CU is the only place that expects it WR to make reads on the field.

This place has lost it's mind lately!!!!!

I said it in another thread but hawk has made a Rube Goldberg machine out of the offense. Unnecessarily complex. Do we really need a thousand variations of the 3 yard curl route? I'd rather see them play sandlot football with their best athletes than continue to watch this putrid display of "sophistication". How well has his garbage system worked so far? I mean supposedly Espy and company are the ones who know how to execute it so why aren't they lighting people up? Could it be because they're built like pizza hut night managers rather than Big XII receivers? It couldn't be that simple could it?

I would think the coach would try to simplify things to get your best WR on the field as fast as possible.

I was thinking about our WRs and I was going to post something today. I think it's easy for us to immediately blame coaches for these guys not being up to speed, but WR is a more complex position than we usually think. Look at the NFL, I was trying to think of rookie WRs that come in and make a difference right away. Colston was the only one that immediately popped into my head, but maybe there are more. The point is, most NFL WRs (the fastest and most talented you will find) don't start showing up until their second or sometimes third season.

A WR has a lot more to think about on every play than say a RB. Beyond knowing what route you are supposed to run out of the huddle, you also have to be able to spot blitzes and coverages and know when you should adjust the route. On running plays you have to know where the play is supposed to go, know who you should block, what direction you should try to block, and most importantly, they have to get in a rhythm with the QB (where will he throw it, when, how fast, etc.). It's not as simple as some of you guys want it to be with the calls to just put them on the field and throw jump balls to them. A RB can come in and really only has to know which direction the play is going and what gap he should try to hit first. To be on the field all three downs, a RB needs to know more, but you can put them out there and they can start to contribute more when they know less. This isn't the case for WRs.

Now, with that said, at some point you hope the coaches can coach the WRs up. Simas looking a little bit lost on Saturday was a warning sign for me since he's had two+ years in the program now. But, that could have been rust as well. Simmons is new to our system, but not new to the position on the college level, so you would hope it wouldn't take him as long to figure things out as Wright or one of the frosh WRs. The coaches don't get a pass from me for these guys not knowing everything yet, but I am willing to take a little bit more of a wait and see. Not a season's worth of wait and see...if the coaches are doing their jobs, these guys will start to be more and more involved because (a) good coaching will help them learn the offense, and (b) good scheming will find ways to get them in the game more even if they aren't perfect yet.

So when the WR HIMSELF says he has some catching to do, we still don't believe it?

"Starting like a week before the CSU game and trying to catch on to the offense that fast is kind of hard," Simmons said. "I mean, as the weeks and days go by, I catch on to everything. True Simmons has reason be behind, but what about Wright and Jefferson? Dan admitted that the defense needed to be simplified. And as for “from the players mouth”, Damage control and tow the line or ride the pine.

Enter Chilly in 3,2,1..."Do you have this as fact or just speculation like everybody else on this site?"

These guys arent professionals that can spend all day studying the playbook. They have to keep thier GPA up as well. Remember that guys, when you complain about somebody not being able to play because they are ineligible.

Even more reason to keep it simple.

Please, go fuc yourself with a nine iron. Those guys are still Buffs and deserve your respect.

That will last about a halftime, before the opposing secondary is able to know the recievers route before they do. Its a catch 22 with our youth, and rushing things will just make it worse.

That's longer than the one or two series it's taking defenses to adjust against us now...

You can kiss my rebel dic*. You're going to squash dissent by being an internet tough guy? Good luck with that.

Whose being the internet tough guy? I said please. You want to call out Buff players from behind your keyboard. I just told you what you could do with yourself. Good luck getting that rebel dick fixed. Sounds painful.

Ouch, you got me that time hoss. You get a tip of my hat for your rapier wit. I didn't say anything that hasn't been said a thousand times already. You want to call everyone out for it then do it superfan. I wish we could all be superfans like you.

Thats the problem. Its getting old and accomplishing nothing.

Ok, a simplified defense was a big reason why we shut out Wyoming right?

So wouldn't a simplified offense help us to get the ball to our playmakers? And when playmakers have the ball, don't they do something called make plays? Isn't that what we want to do - make plays and score points??

Am I missing something? Is there a reason Juicebox does not subscribe to this idea? Does it have something to do with a player's GPA or how often they play Xbox with Cody & Dan or something?

That was my first thought after the Wyoming game as well, but that would be too obvious for hawk and company. They're going to stick with their sophisticated system until it works...

A simplified defense helps us beat WYO because we can out-athlete wyoming. A complicated offense will help us beat other big 12 teams because we cannot out athlete other big twelve teams.

Not trying to be a smartass, but seriously, which B12 teams do you look at on the sked and say,"There's a team CU will beat"? I see ISU and KSU, beyond that, as much as I hate it, it gets pretty iffy. Maybe aTm, but I thought that last year too.

So we're going to out-system them? This will end badly.

You're right. Unless our offense gets a lot better, we are screwed. But it is not going to get better if we just run some vanilla scheme. We aren't going to just out-talent folks. In my mind, it's probably a good idea to try do some stuff that might help us win.

but as fans we have a right to vent without having to check with our superfan overlords first.

You have a right to vent. You do not have a right to insult or personally attack players. Easy way to remember - if it's against the forum rules, you don't have a "right" to do it here.

You've already said the Pizza Hut reference was a mistake, and I think that's the point of contention here. So everything should be cool now....

A complicated system didn't help us against CSU and Toledo. I guess we just don't have the athletes at CU to compete with the lambs, not to mention even trying to compete with teams from the MAC.
