This is the kind of inspired move that was necessary to turn this defense around. He brought fire, speed, and some serious hitting power to the team! Penetration, good angles, etc, Burney had it all yesterday.

I really hope they stick with it, because I thought BB was our best player against CSU not named Jimmy smith. Him being off the field is inexcusable. He is obviously in a different athletic category then either Mahnke (even when healthy) or Perkins. Plus he brings some serious fire to the D.

And on the touchy feely note, the guy deserves a chance to show his stuff in his last year here. Getting benched behind CB must have hurt. I just hope the staff sticks with this move.

Both the browns played very well yesterday. Jalil was gangbusters! Oh, and I loved the fact that the D basically had 4 calls the entire game. I bet CB loved getting to blitz on every other play :lol:
 
Burney was possessed yesterday, most emotional guy on the field.

With so much depth at cb and the struggles at safety, this might should have been figured out sooner, but better late than never.
 
By far, that was the best change of the day. Better be that way the rest of the season.
 
The secondary was excellent in my opinion. Jalil and Jimmy both played very tight press coverage and were never beat. Burney played like a "nickel safety" and was awesome. Chapelle was solid. No one sucked. Very nice.

And the more experience these young guys on the DL get, the better the LBs and DBs will look. I have much more hope for the defense now than the offense. Well, the offense has Speedy running hard, so that helps, if Cody and Pappy can figure out how to use the tall fast WRs, then the offense might come around too. If the OL can grow together some more. Alot more.
 
We have some great athletes back there. A switch needed to be made and I'm glad they actually did it. Burney looked possessed and Jalil looked very good as well.
 
It was nice to see the secondary play well this week and not get burned deep. The D still needs to work on tackling though.
 
In the Toledo game, only Jimmy Smith stood out, chasing down players that escaped the coverage of team mates. His horsecollars of frustration were understandable.

Yesterday the defense played as a cohesive team. I'd feel a lot more comfortable, however, if this performance came against a ranked team.

Watching the UT and Tech offenses are ridiculously more talented than Wyoming's.
 
Very nice move. Safety has been a sore spot for a couple years. Really need the extra speed back there against the spread.

We should be playing press almost all of the time, with the corners we have. Almost every single deep play we have given up has been when we were in zone and somebody blew a coverage.

Also, the corners are in press coverage is what lets the safeties fly around and just play football.

Another reason to like Burney at safety, he obviously can cover man-on-man himself, which is nice playing against spread offenses.

Don't leave Jalil off that list. He's played very well this season, IMO, especially last game. He and Jimmy both played press coverage on the Wyo WRs all game long and locked them down. This allowed us to do things like send Chappelle (I know there's an apostrophe in there somewhere and I spelled it wrong, but I'm lazy. Sorry.) on corner blitzes every other down.

I think our secondary problems in the first two games were mainly coming from the safety position, and Burney seemed to really tighten things up there last week. I hope it wasn't a one-week turnaround and the secondary. Another reason for optimism here, I think a lot of the problems we saw were due to inexperience (Polk) and injury (Mahnke). Take care of that and we've got a lot of good options back there.

agreed, but it was also scheme... getting Jalil and Jsmith up in WR's faces definitely seems to be their strength and it really plays hell with the spread offense which is built on timing and short routes as its meat and potatoes...

However, it definitely requires us to get pressure on the QB or else the press coverage will break down and disaster occurs... Really hope our Dline and LB's step up big thursday!
