Ron Collins

This is interesting as the coordinators go in cycles with me. Last year was ragging on MH's playcalling while applauding Collins for standing pat; this year watched the defense get shredded and out-athleted and went for Collins' head. Now I'm on Kiesau's ass and have Collins to appreciate now that the young freshmen on the line have gotten up to speed. I can't shake that good cop/bad cop mentality.

He's finally figured out that in the Big 12 testosterone (BALLS) matters more than strategy. We're finally playing aggressive with a really athletic defense. I never bought this BS that we're a really slow team. (Although there are some guys that are slow.) All in all, I would say Collins has done a MUCH, MUCH better job of putting the best athletes on the field than Kiesau has.

I do consider myself an optimist. That said, I still think the Buffs can be a formidable team. I still think we won't lose at home any more this season. After we made Texas say "whuttt?" today, I guaran-f*cking-tee the rest of the B12 North is saying "okay, that game in Boulder isn't a gimme at all."

I'm betting the heat will ease off Hawk as the season goes. It would help if he used his Augusts to a more productive end.

And as for that hair .. ah nevermind, mine sucks too.

I still can't believe he defended his game plan after the Mizzu game last year. That being said it seems like he's willing to try new things and his defense has improved this year. I just can't forgive their performances against CSU and Toledo just yet. Another performance like tonight against Reesing next week and I'll be on the Collins bandwagon.

I'm not a Collins guy. If I had my wish, Brown would be our DC, Collins would be gone, and we'd be able to move Ambrose onto the staff.

That said, Collins benefits from Hawkins being more hands off with the defense. Plus, with Brown and Cabral, he's got two great assistants. I still question the defensive play calling at times, but at least we're being aggressive now.

I credit our DC for a great game vs. Texas last night.

The guys looked were all over the field, shedding blocks, getting pressure on the quarterback and meeting running backs at the line of scrimmage. Coverage was pretty good, and I can't blame Jimmy Smith for ridiculous passes and amazing catches when he was in perfect position.

However, I still have a few concerns about Coach Collins.

This is his fourth season, and after the embarrassing loss against Toledo, he went public with his decision to dumb down the defense. Too late, in my opinion. If that needed to be done, the coach should have recognized it sooner.

The game plans against Mizzou still loom in my mind.

Nonetheless, we've faced an incredibly athletic quarterback with some ability to throw (WVU) and a quarterback with an incredible arm/completion rate with some ability to scramble (Texas) in back-to-back weeks.

Now we need to prepare for a slightly more balanced quarterback with a great arm and tremendous legs. Oh yeah, and a stable of kick-ass receivers.

I hope Coach Collins brings me on board this week.

Go Buffs!!!

I don't know what to think about Collins. How could the same defensive unit that was shredded by Toledo and WV in completely different ways look so good last night? How could Devine have 250+yd and average 10yds/ carry and Texas have less than 50 yds rushing and average 1.8per carry?

It wouldn't be shocking next if KU hangs 40 on us, or if we hold them to 10, based on the first 5 games of the season.

I would be shocked if it were anything in between, however. 10 or less, or 40 or more. Those or the only choices from where I sit.*

Collins seems to fit the into Short Bus Watson mold for me. Each season he has one or two great game plans (like texas last night) where everyone pats him on the back and calls him a genius, 2-3 horrible games (CSU, Toledo & TBD) where everyone call for his head, and the rest of the season is a bunch of games that are just below acceptable and everyone is left with the unstatifying feeling that we should be better than that.

I'm not sold on Collins. I don't expect perfection week in and week out but I do expect the D to consistantly tackle solidly, play with fire and tenacity, and with little or no break downs. If we get beat because the other team's guys are bigger/stronger/faster and they make a play, then that's a Hawk recruiting problem. We just better be in position if we get beat - that's coaching.

:yeahthat: my feelings... plus claiming the gameplan was great sticks in my craw.

Cant pat him on the back just yet, but it was a great game plan and the defense does seem to show the most improvement week to week.....I would like to see the same here on out, keep improving and coming up with the great game plan.

I'm far from sold on Collins. Like Valdez said, he's streaky. You never know what you're gonna get. He's got a couple of really good coaches in Brown and Cabral, who I think have much more impact on the D than Collins does.

I don't think the turnaround from CSU and Toledo to now has as much to do with scheme as it does with playing simple, fast, aggressive defense. They got the speed on the field and it's paying great dividends.

I haven't been sold on Helfrich, Kiesau or Collins.
Maybe the improved defensive play is due to Collins finally disregarding Hawkins' orders for player groupings like he has (foolishly) used on offense.

I still believe it was unfair to slam on Helfrich based on what he had. jmho.

I don't know that I can even agree a little bit. We went 2-10 during a season we played BJax instead of White, then lost White to quitting/transferring. He failed to develop a relationship with the best QB in the program when he walked in. Then failed to recruit someone in the 1st 2 classes that could make up for the loss of White. Instead, Hawkins brought in Idaho's best HS quarterback 2 straight years. So, what we had is largely Helfrich's fault. Worse, what we did have didn't develop largely because Helfrich didn't have a vision for the offense and was constantly changing it. He was an unmitigated disaster as an OC / QB coach.

White quit on the team. He refused to learn the playbook and screwed over his teammates. I don't blame the staff when a kid isn't willing to work on his end.

But you're correct on recruiting. He failed to bring in anyone to compete against Cody.

Underrated Defensive Coordinator imo. props

CU is ranked 85th in total defense and 107th in pass efficiency defense. Yes they did well against UT but sorry I am not ready to do handstands yet for Collins. There are 3 losses that the defense contributed heavily to so he is not a miracle worker in my book.

Collins sucks. I think the defense needed a new guy after last year too. I can't stand him. If I were given all power and had the financial resources to do it - I'd fire the coaching staff, except for Kiesau, Cabral, Ambrose and Brown. I know a lot of people don't like Kiesau, but I think he'll get there - just need an offensive minded head coach to help him out.

I'm sick of this coaching STAFF (NOT just Hawk). I think they are not only doing a disservice to our school and program, but to the players. The defense played great during the game, but I do not attribute that to Collins. The atrocious performances in the past ring much louder than the UT game.

I will reserve judgment on Collins. He has 2 games a year where his D seems to get it going in the right direction, only to revert back to it's old mistakes later on.

I am not screaming about firing Collins this week like I have been since the CSU game, but still talk very openly about it. That was a great game, but as most of you state above, there is a lot that he needs to prove throughout the remainder of this season.

I would like to see us get back tot he days of having great coordinators...you know, the kind that others want to hire as head coaches. I know, it takes money for that, but I just don't see us succeeding until we have real strong coordinators.
