The Hylanders coach has revived the program, with the help of a junior guard who can shoot the lights out in any game.

Columbia Heights boys' basketball coach Willie Braziel shook his head at one that got away. His Hylanders had taken Minnetonka -- last year's Class 4A champion -- to the wire before falling 73-67 Saturday. The loss dropped his squad to 5-6.
"We're below where we should be," Braziel said. "We haven't met expectations yet."
But while a victory over a diminished but still formidable Minnetonka squad would have been a nice upset, the greater and more important overall surprise is that there are high expectations at Heights, even if they are as yet unrealized.
Braziel, formerly the girls' coach at Minneapolis Roosevelt, took over the helm last season and guided a young Columbia Heights team to a 13-14 record. The year before Braziel arrived, the team won four games.
A deeper dig into Hylanders history reveals that Columbia Heights' one and only state tournament appearance in boys' basketball came in 1930. While saying Heights becomes relevant in boys' hoops every time this country goes into a once-a-century economic depression wouldn't be accurate, suffice to say it's been a while since there were reasons for sustained optimism.
Braziel has chosen to set the bar high, scheduling nonconference games against Minnetonka, Hopkins and St. Bernard's in addition to a North Suburban Conference schedule that features, among others, Cooper twice.
One big reason Braziel has his team taking on all comers -- aside from personal pride -- is junior shooting guard Jacob Thomas. Thomas averaged 22 points per game as a sophomore and is at 21.5 ppg this season. He is 6-2 and looks to still be growing. Against Minnetonka, he scored 30 points -- half of them coming on five three-pointers -- and had games of 37 and 40 points earlier this season.

Class of 2010 Post-Summer Top 175 Ratings

Since the spring and summer evaluation periods are now history, and 2010 players are getting ready to soon begin their senior year of high school, it is timely to update our ratings of the top prospects in this class. As previously written, the Class of 2010 has good talent, but may not have the overall depth of recent years, particularly at the post position. During the past twelve or more years talented young players have been encouraged to make their college decisions at the earliest possible age. And, at this writing 66 of our Top 100 rising seniors had already committed to a college.We anticipate that these numbers will increase significantly now that most young men have stopped playing on summer travel teams, and are attending college “elite camps,” or making campus visits prior to the November signing period.
Following are our ratings of the Top 175 Players in the Class of 2010.

Bob Gibbons is the OG of basketball recruiting guys. I like him a lot, and I think he proves his worth for having the guts to put Knight at #5, and essentially the #2 point guard behind Irving. EVERYONE has Knight or Barnes between #1 and #2, but Gibbons does something interesting. His list really deviates from others out there, and I think it has a lot to do with how he actually evaluates players.
...not that these rankings really matter, as the difference between #1 and #5 can be really slight.

After the report that we're looking for 2 frontcourt guys this cycle, this doesn't bother/worry me so much. It's not like we were out-recruited by LBSU or anything.
Hard to believe that the early signing period starts exactly a month from today (November 11th - 18th). Either we don't know about some guys or it's pretty clear who the final 4 or 5 targets are for our 2 spots.
