Running in the Big 12

After witnessing UT vs OU I've been wondering: do any teams in the Big 12 run the ball anymore?

Around the league I see Helu Jr, Washington (at MU), Murray at OU (who didn't do very well), Stewart, but for the life of me I can't think of anyone else.

What the hell happened to the Big 12? Purify, Brown, R. Williams, even the old option offenses. The last standout at RB I can remember was Charles at UT a few years ago.

I guess you can say Chase at MU, Reesing at KU and Colt at UT "count," but what about the 1000 yard rushers? How many did VY go for?

What happened was that Texas high school football switched to the spread and puts out the best spread QBs in the country. Teams are going with offenses that mesh with what's available in recruiting. At least that's one of the reasons. I'd love to see CU get back to playing smashmouth.

Even teams with spread Os need big lineman, just look at TTs OL last year. Don't tell me that teams wouldn't want a power running back to mix things up with the spread.

That's why the SEC is the strongest conf at this time. Big uglies that are FAST and powerful.

You're forgetting Kendall Hunter at OSU.

Ah, totally forgot about him. He was awesome last year, but he sprained his ankle and he may not be back this year.

Would be a tough, tough loss for OSU. He hasn't been a starter for the past 4 games though.

The Spread Offense doesn't use power-blocking. Or any blocking, sometimes. I don't see this as a running backs issue at all. Colorado, after all, has the nation's top RB recruit and they use him - uh, well, never mind. Bad example. But no one's really trying to power the ball in the conference.

I can't stand the spread offense, line it up and run that bitch!!!! Who all played high school ball in Colorado in the late 80's remember the "T"...lol

As long as Florida and others are winning NCs with the spread and traditionally weak teams like TT,KU, and Mizzou are competing for BCS bowl money with it teams will use the spread. Coaches are notorious for being copycats, when something wins they all start to follow. Same thing happened as far back as the single-wing. When Texas won a NC with the triple option within three years over half the teams in the country were running either veer or wishbone.

All it takes is one or two coaches to go against the grain and win with something different and the whole game will follow. If Johnson at Georgia Tech or somebody else reaches the BCS with a run based offense the following year you will see a bunch of teams trying to run the same thing.

'Bama and Mark Ingram are knocking on the door.
