I may be coming across as a Mike Bohn apologist. If so, fine. But it just occurred to me how much trouble we'd be in right now if he weren't here. Can you imagine how few people would actually be coming to football games if he weren't around to get people into the stadium? The entire athletic department would be bankrupt.

:stupid:

Zing.

I knew something like that was coming. I would have expected it from Miami or Junk though.

You can see it from across the room. You should consider putting your long coat on or doing something to cover it up.

i agree with you sacky, if he can find a way to get out of the mess we're in now and hire a real coach, I would think of Bohn as a great AD.

I had this discussion with my friends during the 7 hour drive back from Manhattan. The wins aren't coming the way we want them to, but I feel like the Athletic Department is light years ahead of where it used to be in every other area - attendance, marketing, PR, ticket ops, general business ops, and budgeting. This stadium would be half-full if it weren't for Bohn and his crew's efforts.

I'm also very optimistic that Bz will get BB going this year, and we'll be in the tourney in the 10-11 season. Hopefully the crowds will follow.

Bohn is getting butts into seats. The PR he's done has been fantastic. No one can deny that AT ALL. New traditions abound at CU Football and I'm very happy with that as an alum. The spring game attendance is up, overall, and there's been enthusiasm around the program the last few years.

I'm definitely glad he's here as things could certainly be worse. Most coaches would have struggled after essentially restarting when our last regime left and, for the most part, everyone--well, almost everyone--understood that it was going to take time to rebuild. Hawk looked like he could do it. There were regressions, but then there were also signs of improvement. The only real problem I have with Bohn right now is that Hawk and his agent pulled a fast one and kept the same buyout when he got his extension. Huge mistake. Hopefully he can recover and learn from this if he gets the chance to hire a new coach. Hawk looked like a good hire at the time, but it doesn't look like that at all right now.

People around Colorado have a renewed sense of pride in CU and Bohn has been integral to that. I've noticed this as an out-of-stater.

However, people are defined by their struggles and how they overcome them. Taking the heat is part of the job he faces by taking such a high profile job. He can overcome this. If he does we'll be strong. If not, we must head in a different direction. He needs the support of the Chancellor, Regents and President to become an effective AD though. I don't know if we have that. I want him to succeed because it all start at the top and he has the makings of a good AD.

A really good one.

Agree on the business front to a degree.

But his hirings have been terrible. CU is the worst school in the B12 right now from a competitive standpoint in the 2 revenue producing sports -- football and men's bball. His hire in woman's bball, arguably the #3 most popular sport on campus, has been terrible. The only 3 sports where we have success all have coaches that were hold-overs (cross country, skiing and women's soccer).

I don't trust Bohn to hire a new football coach at this stage.

:iagree:

I'm also concerned about his ability to hire a good coach - for any sport. His track record there has been abysmal. I can't think of one coach he's hired that has been successful. Anywhere. ouch.

Can't get any worse, right? :ahhhhh:

Until Bohn does his JOB and removes this asshat from the head coach position, he's a FAILURE in my mind.. He created this and he needs to clean it up.. Don't want to hear he's working behind the scenes from the insiders either and at the end of the season, blah, blah, blah. .. I want HAWK gone NOW. TODAY. I don't want to see him on our sideline EVER AGAIN.. And until that happens, I'm blaming Bohn for allowing this embarrassment to continue.

at the time both Hawk & Buzz were highly regarded when hired...

I'm not arguing the hires. At the time, we all pretty much agreed that they were good hires. They have turned out to be awful, but I'm not sure we can blame Bohn for that. He can only do what he can do. He's not clarvoyant.

Yes. Also at the time Hawk was the perfect hire. It was a tough time....

Jimmy, I don't think a midseason firing is in the cards, but if it doesn't come at the end of the season after missing a bowl game I'll agree with you.

Not arguing with you this time. It's just nice to see the ol' fire & brimstone Jimmy instead of that calm & reasoned ****er we've seen the rest of this season. Welcome back.

Maybe, maybe not. Who would his replacement have hired to replace Barnett?

Winning cures just about everything.

Let's look back and see who was available at the time. The other finalist was Jon Embree if I recall correctly. He still hasn't gotten a head coaching job anywhere and is coaching WRs for the woeful Kansas City Chiefs. I like Embree as much as anybody, but his pedegree hasn't exactly blown any doors off.

Oh, and we could have hired Dave Logan. I don't remember any other serious contenders for the job. I think Butch Davis was a name we all were excited about, but that was a pipe dream.

Do you think any of them would have done worse than Hawkins? I don't.

You can't make blanket statements like you did in your first post because you don't know what any other AD would have done. We might be in the same boat we're in today, we might be worse, or we might be looking a lot better. There's no way to tell.

IMO, the jury is still out. What is Bohn going to do about the BUST that he hired and extended, one year removed from a 2-10 season. Bohn's hires to date have been poor. Sure it is easy to second guess, but he wouldnt have to be a promotion wizard if he didnt hire the coaches in the B12 with the worst records.

In fact, the Football, and Mens and womans Hoops hires under Bohn are the combined worst in the B12...Combined not one has had a winning season. I am almost certain that we stand alone in the B12 with this distinction.

Also, if MB is doing such a great job, why did the juicebox not have to make any staff changes, how is recruiting going this year, why is Cody's dad still our coach?

Why are we praising Bohn because people still go to the games to watch his 15-29 lose to Toledo, Mont state, CSU coach?

Should we give props to Bohn for not killing our program yet?

He can still fix things, imo by firing Cody's dad NOW.

I'll make all the blanket statements I want to. That's what this forum is here for. It doesn't matter what another AD would have done, because what Bohn has done has been very good. I wouldn't give up his successes for an unknown commodity. I honestly think he's one of the best ADs in the country. How he can manage to turn a profit on a department where the football and basketball teams stink to high heaven is nothing short of miraculous.

We're giving him props for making the athletic department profitable in spite of the crap on the field and on the court. Most any other department would be swimming in red ink under the same set of circumstances.

And yes, he needs to fire the WR coach.

Because he has people like you in his pocket. :smile2::smile2:

I'm not the reason. I haven't been to a basketball game in ages. Combined, my family owns a total of four football season tickets and a Buff Club membership.

Bohn's coaching hires have been atrocious, that's the reason the football and basketball teams stink. Sure, they looked good at the time, but none of them have panned out, and he has not shown a willingness to try and rectify those mistakes. And Bohn's negotiating skills suck monkey balls (see the CSU extension, Toledo game and Hawk's extension for reference).

Yes, he's done some good things. But he's done some bad things, too. He doesn't get a pass on the bad because of the good. He should be rated on the whole, not just by cherrypicking categories where he has done well.

I would give him a B- or a C. And I certainly would not call him one of the best ADs in the country just yet. He might get there, but he's got a lot of work to do.
