It’s time Joel Klatt gets off his rant about Hawkins and staff and here’s why.

What good comes of it? Hawkins fate will be sealed by how this team finishes the season, if in fact, it’s not already sealed.
Clearly, the vast majority of players are firmly behind their coach and impassioned to win-out to save his job.

When was the last time you saw that support for a coaching staff?

2005-2006, a team led by Joel Klatt. That team “laid down” losing a certain by losing to ISU, followed by a complete embarrassment at home to NU (30-3) and then taking the embarrassment on the road when ISU somehow gave CU the league crown. 70-3 folks. Did they quit? Looked like it....

Never had a CU team “wanted it” like that before. So let’s quit talking about quitters and “not giving it 100%”, because it may not be what it seems. I know that team didn’t quit in ’05 but it sure looked like it didn’t it?

Joel – release yourself from the guilt you subconsciously hold for letting down Gary Barnett in late 2005. You can’t get him back by piling on the Dan Hawkins Fail train.
It is natural for the players from the Gary Barnett era to have “never been open to accepting the new coach”. You were a great Buff and you put your health (10 concussions at CU) on the line for the team, school, traditions, and in the end, for a man you loved, Gary Barnett. We do not hold you responsible for the biggest embarrassment ever at CU. Hawkins will never be good enough, even if the record was 5-2 or 6-1.

Let go of the “sign being painted over”. Hawk has been nothing if not a traditionalist, bringing Eddie Crowder and Mac to center stage from the beginning. I hardly think he ordered the sign in the cafeteria painted over…. Mac would be all over him if that were true. Hawk has done a lot of great things for tradition and the betterment of the University. He’s failed in one area and in one area only – winning.

Hating on Hawk doesn’t bring back GB.
Hating on Hawk may improve your radio ratings and ultimately your career (I hope that is not your motivation).
Hating on Hawk won’t quicken his exit.

Hawkins failing to win is the issue. The fans who “hate the man” and “can’t stand to see him talk”, would feel exactly the opposite if we were 6-1. The fact is, we are awful and yet at the same time not too far from beating #2 Texas in Austin. We are a lot closer to being competitive than the ’06 team that won the North but couldn’t come close to competing against top-10 teams. I hated to see us go to the B12 championships back then because we had no chance.

The results on the field will determine Hawk’s future. It may be this year or it may be next year. Results need to change and we all know that. If he's the wrong guy, it will play out this year or next. We don't need to invent reasons such as this sign BS to fire Hawkins.

Klatt's given more to the program than most of us. He can rant all he wants, in my opinion.

I hope the players are behind their coaching staff, but what's your evidence?

It comes across to me as all about being pissed at the dumbass "youre not a coach" comment. If thats the case, he needs to be a professional.

Simple fact of the matter is that pressure needs to be applied to the powers that be from any and every possible angle. I have no problem with Klatt's comments.

I hope the players are behind their coaching staff, but what's your evidence?

Oh, the majority of the players are behind the coaching staff. Marcus Burton's comments, Tyler Hansen's comments, a defensive player I cant recall yesterday in the paper said something like "we loved the press conference. It was nice to see that. Great for team morale. We're behind coach 100%". Paraphrasing. I know of 2 players that dont like Hawk at all, but, other than that, I think the players like him. And would a lot more if he could win. :sad1:

Spare me the pompous pop-psychology on display in the OP of this thread and the fantasies of this team being 5-2 or 6-1 (laughable).

Klatt has a problem with Hawkins for the same the reason the rest of us do. He doesn't know what he is doing and is well on his way to dragging this program into a hole from which we may never resurface.

You are really underestimating the effect of spending 4 or more years in the absolute cellar on a football team. The older posters here love to complain about the younger CU students and their perceived lack of support for the program.

Guess what? Go 2-10 or 3-9 this year and then do it again next year and there won't be many younger fans left for you guys to take issue with.

I went a bit over the top in criticizing Joel in a previous post. I love that I can get in the car and listen to some Buff talk on the way home, for sure. I love JK's passion for the program. I was pretty affected when I heard him on with McChesney the other day. After thinking about it more, however, I probably jumped the gun.

Joel comes across to me as someone with a vendetta. I think he should back off but he won't. I think he believes that he is carrying the torch for guys like McChesney and Pesavento, who both do not like Hawkins. JK definitely dislikes Hawkins and wants him to fail.

JK definitely dislikes Hawkins and wants him to fail.

No. He loves the program and wants it to succeed. What's standing in the way is the current regime. That's a big difference.

I think the players are behind their coach more by definition than gut loyalty. He's their coach until he isn't (you can quote me on that) and they really have no option emotionally or otherwise than to support him and try to make the best of a bad situation.

I liked Klatt as a player and like him as a commentator. However, these guys (Klatt and Al) advising players to transfer seems over the top to me, I don't ever recall commentators making these kinds of comments prior, much less for their former alma mater. imo, Klatt is just a young guy who took Hawkins snip too personal. As he continues to mature he hopefully won't let comments like that get under his skin and allow him to look petty.

We all love the program and the best thing for the program would be for Hawkins to turn it around, start winning, and remain as coach. That would be the best thing for the program. But like I've posted before, I'm really torn on this thing. Unlike you and Joel, I'm not sure what the answer is. I guess I'm just stupid that way. I don't live in a "black and white" world.

The whole argument that we would love Hawk if he were 6-1 or 5-2 is soooo f'ing lame! We would also all like SPAM if it didnt SUCK so bad!

Reality is Hawk...cannot coach
...cannot hire talented assistants
...cannot motivate players
...cannot strategize
...cannot make in game adjustments
...cannot stop his nepotism
...cannot stop screwing around very talented kids that dont buy into his philosophical bull$hit
...cannot be honest with himself and where his team is headed
...cannot deal with reality and leans on his philosophical bull$hit to make excuses for what is really going on

Klatt is keeping it real and calling out Hawk because he knows it is warranted.

There is a difference between a team giving up on its coach which happened in '05 and a team who just has no clue and doesnt look like it is getting one soon.

Any wins, against half decent teams, that Hawk comes up with are the rarity and are often based on how bad the other team played rather than how good the Buffs were.

I'm hoping Hawk gets fired ASAP and seriously doubt he gets a Div 1 coaching job at any school of significance until he proves himself again. Everyone is starting to see there is NO substance behind his bull$hit.

Well, football is a black and white world. You are there to win period. The other stuff is great and hawk and bohn have done well there but you are judged by wins and losses.

Believe me, all of that goes through my head as well. And if the admin feels like a change is best, I'll sure as hell be excited to get on board with the new coach. But I'd also see that as another set back, time wise, for the program.

I have no problem with Klatt. He is on the radio to give his opinions and talk sports. I would prefer that he call out the program for everything that is going wrong. I would be more upset if he was out there spouting the Juicebox company line about "how young we are", "it's the little things", "had a good practice", etc.

I would rather listen to someone like Klatt be honest with the state of the program. The alternative is listening to someone like Boo Hoo Lou talk about ND. Every year they are gonna win 10 games and contend for the BCS, and even when every FB expert says the team will be lucky to win 6 games, Boo Hoo is going on about how great they are.

Bottom line is right now are program is crap. I see very little to be optimistic about for the rest of this season, and unless a miracle happens and we get rid of Juicebox 2010 with a very difficult schedule is looking like it could be even worse.

He's not the only one. That comment was incredibly unprofessional in the first place...

Exactly. And since Klatt has a platform in the media, he can use that to promote change.

Klatt never ADVISED nor did he ENCOURAGE any player to leave the program. The comment was that he would not blame a certain QB for transferring. You might think I am splitting hairs but there is a big difference.

I think there's a big difference, too, because that's exactly how I feel. I don't want players to transfer, but I sure as hell wouldn't blame them if they did.

Winning would cure everything.

I think there are positives in Klatt airing these things publicly. He needs to be somewhat careful, though. It needs to always come from loving the Buffs and not as a personal vendetta / grudge / dislike against Dan Hawkins. Whatever the personal feelings about Dan Hawkins, a good Buff still wants the guy to turn this around.

Very true, He never told any player to transfer, but that he would not blame him if he did decide to transfer...I give a  to JK, he has the balls to call out Hawkins, and he has paid his dues to do so

Clearly, the vast majority of players are firmly behind their coach and impassioned to win-out to save his job.

Clearly? I don't think this is clear to anyone, let alone you. If what you say is true, the team would have showed up against KSU. Last I checked, KSU was still looking for an opponent for last weekend LOL

Clearly the players are playing for THEMSELVES and EACH OTHER. I doubt the majority of the players give two ****s about this coaching staff right now.

He's not the only one. That comment was incredibly unprofessional in the first place...

Totally agree. Only thing I'd say though, is, Hawkins doesnt continue to make comments regarding Klatts lack of coaching experience on a daily basis. I really dont have a beef with Klatt though. If he's upset with Hawkins, and I take it at face value, because of our **** record, lack of passion, dog**** game at K-state, etc then Im with him. If he's bitter b/c of Hawkins comment....get over it profesionally. Personally, be pissed.

I like Klatt alot, so, I probably lean towards its just really that he sees the program going in the wrong direction. Coach or not, I respect that opinion. He knows better than any of us.:sad1:

**** you and **** Dan Talkins

I'm not sure how much of a set back it would be. If there is one thing Hawk has done pretty well here it is recruiting. I think the team has a lot of talent but the coaches have done a miserable job of coaching them up and developing schemes that take advantage of the talent.

You get a true FOOTBALL coach in here with some new assistants and I think you would see an almost immediate improvement in game day performance.

Klatt's given more to the program than most of us. He can rant all he wants, in my opinion.

He made some great point about Hawkins broke from the past from taking down signs to dissing the older players. Hawkins is hanging himself with his own rope. These additional details are just extra nails for the coffin.

Exactly. And since Klatt has a platform in the media, he can use that to promote change.

He's a talking version of Woody Paige except he actually has experience. He is paid to provide his opinion and thats what it is. He's just more legitimate.

I question that. He has had one good year in his 4 classes and that was helped by having a 5 star player with an Uncle on the team and getting a couple of 4 star players when Nebraska fired Callahan. His other classes have been pretty average to below average in the conference and this year is not shaping up very good. Very few of CU commits this year are getting offers from BCS schools much less the top schools. The 2009 class would even fall more in the rankings considering that Nuckols and Moten did not get into the program.

Add to that the fact that he has undersigned the last couple leaving CU about 12 under the 85 man limit. With further attrition CU will have to bring in a class of 25 plus players and with the way the team is performing it is getting tougher to attract the top recruits. Meaning CU will be YOUNG once again.
