Gary Barnett is interviewed weekly on Denver Sports Radio. You can hear the podcast at http://www.thescore1510.com/. Here's a summary of what Barnett said this week about the Buffs:

I don't think Hawkins is under pressure. I think CU will win this week (Missouri is really struggling)

CU is in a good situation in that they are in the North division. No one, other than Nebraska, has the resources to be a powerhouse like the southern schools.

What Dan expected out of the environment of CU is not what he found when he got here. There's an image of CU that it is a football factory. It isn't. I didn't think Dan understood he'd be responsible for academics and other non-football issues. Once he got to Colorado he started
to realize the depth of that job - it's more difficult than alot of places. Dan is coming to grips to that right now. See all the guys he's lost to academics and who he couldn't get in.

Underneath all those statements Dan is saying, he's finally realizing what's involved with the CU job.

I don't think CU football fans totally understand the difficulty and complexity of the head coaching position at CU. The 1 year assistant contracts is a big problem - no other state in the country has that. That's an indicator of where things are, and how complex that job and the CSU job are.

You have to develop alot of players at Colorado.

Shocking revelation....Dan Hawkins is in over his head!!!

No way!

I hope we can sit through a 5th losing season in a row in 2010. We're close, getting our horns out and all the other Bull**** platitudes we've been hearing.

So sick of my Buffs being at best a mediocre football program.

Sigh..

Out of curiosity what do you expect out of the football team DBT and Chilly? Are you guys really that pleased with the job Hawk has done? I know you both like his way of going about things, but you can't really defend his actual football coaching can you? Maybe his destiny in life is to become a counselor or something, but good CU football coach he is not. That's not disregarding some of the challenges a coach has to put up with coming in here.

Or a passable WAC/lower division coach.

I don't know that you can say that with certainty yet. Well, I'm sure you and others can, but that doesn't make you right.

Doesn't make them wrong either. Mostly just makes them people who follow the evidence at hand, I'd say....

Interesting comments from Barnett. I have no doubt that what he describes is true, but I'd expect to hear them more in describing his tenure at CU's. What he's saying Hawk didn't expect is the parts of the job that everybody pretty much agrees Hawk has done well and is well suited for. I can't really imagine Hawk at a true football factory, but that's what Barnett says Hawk was looking for...

I also have to wonder how much he and Hawk have talked about the job. I've always had the impression Hawk had a relationship with Mac, but never have heard anything to suggest he and GB had much of a relationship...

well, let's just add some speculation and opinion to the mix, shall we?

let's just say that barnett weren't fired and that, somehow, someway, he'd have recruited the exact same guys to the program that hawk and company have recruited in these 4 years.

who would have a better record, theoretically? hawk or gb over this 4 year period?

i am going to go out on a limb (not) and say that gb goes bowling in at ALL freaking 3 of the last 3 seasons. oh, and he probably wins the north at least once of those 3 times. and, he wins the north this year too. i suspect gb and staff wouldn't have the feel-good wins over ou and wvu, but he there is no way, and i mean no effing way whatsoever, that gb loses to montana state or toledo.

so, while i understand where gb is coming from with respect to the inherent challenges of the CU job, the biggest issue is that gb could actually coach and hawkins and his staff cannot. this is not to say that we didn't have to pull the trigger on gb. the so-called scandal and all that did its damage and gb did stop even trying to recruit. but, give me a coach that can actually COACH to face these hurdles rather than a guy who is this ****ing far over his head and is coaching experimentally every week.

Sigh..

I think, maybe I am wrong, I have made it clear that I do not accept what has happened on Saturdays and that his record is not acceptable.

BUT, that does not mean I don't support the way Hawkins is trying to build his team. Coaches have to do both in my opinion. He has failed at the winning side of things. But, because of the integrity he has run the team with, behind the scenes. I would like to see him win.

Why is it wrong that I would want a person, who is doing things they way I believe in, to have success?

I am NOT defending his record, but I will defend what he has done for this program behind the scenes.

If he can't do both, then so be it. But, who ever we hire next, needs to not only win, but they MUST also continue build this program with integrity.

Well firstly, nothing wrong with having an opinion. I think we just disagree as to how important it is to win football games. In my mind, his lack of wins on the football field is just more unacceptable than in your mind I guess? What he does off the field is all well and good, but if it doesn't result in wins then it is insignificant.

I suppose I'm just surprised both you and DBT have reverted back to the light side this week. I thought you were on the dark side after the KSU loss!

That's not fair at all. Of course I'm not pleased. Like I've said many times, if they make a change, I'll support it, but in the mean time, we need to hope Hawkins turns it around. I'm just not totally convinced that he can't or won't. Many, many people have intially failed at a job only to get it figured out. What GB says is very true. Hawkins underestimated what it would take to be successful at CU. Just maybe he will figure it out. Coaching at CU in 2009 is a lot different than it was under Mac, RN, and GB.

Recruiting would be something else he's suited for. He's gotten, and been in on some good players. Not bad considering his record here so far.

I wonder how much trouble he's really had with the 1 year contracts for assistants seeing as I don't remember him losing too many. Grimes and Helfrich are the only ones I can remember leaving.

Do not mistake my opinion that I think he has seriously mishandled the QB situation against KSU as not having respect for what he has done.

My faith that he is the right coach to both build a program with integrity AND win football games was seriously eroded by the KSU loss. His on field and game time decisions leave ALOT to be desired since arriving at CU.

That however, does not mean I don't hope he turns it around and starts winning. I do not undervalue the importance of winning. A coach has to do BOTH. Hawkins is not, and it might just be time for us to go in a different direction.

But who ever we hire needs to do more than win as well. I will not accept a winning coach who is not running an honest program. Ricky fell into that category and I was more than happy to see him leave.

I'm starting to come over to DBT's side. (I'm scared.)

This morning I was sure they were going to cancel work. Then I found out it wasn't cancelled and I was pissed. I yelled at the cat. Slammed my door on the way out. Then while I was shoveling out my car I realised that I was letting this ruin my day.

I feel the same way about the Buffs. I don't want Hawk here anymore but he isn't leaving. So I can be pissed off for the next two years or I can just hope for the best and know that the Buffs will be back and these are the times that weed out the poor fans. (Maybe my tickets will move up next year.)

I've also been a Nuggets fan my whole life so I'm used to this feeling.

Fair enough. Without a doubt I think 95% of the people on here would love to see Hawk suddenly turn it around like he talks about. Just so happens that he seems to promise that weekly and fails to live up to it. He has perpetually disappointed for his entire tenure at CU and that makes me believe he won't be turning it around. I'd love to be wrong.

What we don't know is how many assistants he never got because of the one year contract rule. Same goes for GB and Neuweasel of course... (And Mac? Can't remember how long that rule has been out there....)

Agree about recruiting. Given the on-field results and the image problems he walked into, he has landed some damn good recruits. Perhaps some day some of them will play...

I don't think the 1 years contracts is an issue in retaining assistance. I think it is more of an issue of attracting top assistance to come coach.

i'd feel a lot better about "supporting" the current staff if there were any evidence that they can actually coach.

At the risk of being vilified by the torches and pitchforks crowd, I agree with Chilly. I believe DH is a good man who wants to do right by the kids and the school. During his tenure, academic performance has improved, off-field incidents have tapered off, and he has held players accountable for their actions without regard to their status on the team. He has actually done a decent job recruiting and has assembled the foundation of a pretty good team. His coaching decisions have been suspect from time-to-time, and the game-planning hasn't been very good, but I have the sense things are going to start to change in that area, too. (His last presser suggests he may have had a Tom Coughlin moment of self-reflection that may really result in change.) And, oh yeah, I don't buy into the crap that he played Cody just because he is his son.

The Hawk likely will be around for another year. I'm hopeful that the on-field results will dramatically improve. But whether they do or they don't, and even if he is fired, I think he has done a lot to build the integrity of the program. Let's not lose sight of the fact that, win or lose, less than 10% of the kids that wear the black and gold will ever have a shot at playing on Sundays. DH's efforts to build character and encourage academic success are not without value. I think he deserves a bit more support than is shown on this forum.

I just can't agree with that at all. I was pumped and ready to see Hawk really turn it around last week. I really thought they had turned the corner and then they decide to take the day off. Hawk can get more support from me when he stops saying ridiculous things in the media and starts winning some games.

From the outside looking in this would seem to be the problem. I remember Kiseau saying during last season he hadn't been on a staff that had stayed as intact as Hawk's at CU's so far.

We've all wondered out loud what Hawk could do with recruiting if he had a couple 9/10 win seasons under his belt.

Barnett has said this many times in the past. He said that both him and Rick (Neuheisel) had an advantage over Hawkins in the fact they knew what they were getting into with the CU job.

I have laugh at times, Hawkins acts like before him that CU was doing everything wrong. I admit that CU's image under Barnett had become tarnished but Barnett also did things right - he had 100% graduation rate with one of his classes. I also know that Barnett believed greatly in developing leadership on the team. One of the favorite sayings he had was "They will lead themselves a lot further than you will ever be able to lead them." I sometimes think Hawkins micromanages to the point that he is in the way of the team leading themselves.

Mediocrity would be a big step up right now. They suck.

**** GB he is an asshole deluxe and is making excuses for a fellow coach.

excuses excuses GB had some very good position coaches outside of VO and that's just BS. There are alot of great coaches out there that would give an arm and a leg to become a position coach in Boulder. The ones that have a problem with a 1 year contract are slackers looking for a free ride while they put a crap product on the field. No excuses for crappy coaching we have seen this year.

Hmmmm....believe the guy who took Northwestern to a Rose Bowl and spent a significant amount of his career in Boulder, or believe the guy who thinks aliens are coming to take over the world???
