I would say they put a damper on all this "hes here no matter what" talk...

"We have unequivocal confidence and respect for Dan's work ethic, for the way he conducts his program, for his fit with CU, for his affection in wanting to be at CU for the long term," Bohn said in a recent interview. "His commitment is important to us."

He added that he likes everything about what Hawkins is doing "in all areas except one . . . the win-loss column."

Last week, Hawkins used the forum of his weekly media luncheon to say that he "will be here for a long time." Bohn declined to commit to Hawkins' longevity as CU coach.
oh rlllly?
I-see-what-you-did-there.jpg

As for getting the best coaches, Bohn said he never wants to allow money to become an issue in personnel decisions. He would not comment when asked if Colorado could round up the nearly $3 million that would be owed Hawkins if he makes a coaching change. But Bohn did say fans are mistaken if they believe CU cannot conduct business like other Big 12 schools.

Hell ****ing yes. This is the big XII baby, go coach intramurals brother!

Hawkins will be here next year. There is no guarantee after that. That is what I believe Mike Bohn is thinking. I would even go as far as to say that if the season begins, next year, like it did this year, he may be fired during the season. But at the very least, he starts next season as head coach.

Sounds a little different than what he was saying last week..

Maybe Bohn crunched the numbers and figured out how much they'll stand to lose if he goes into next year with Dan as coach and 40k people in the seats. He has to think that if he sticks with Dan next year, and we come out losing 3 of the first 4 or even 2, which is a very likely possibility, the fans will call it a day. He has to win a few games here at the end to maintain a glimmer of hope.

I think there are a boat load of coaches that could do it all right except in the W - L column. Hell, I could represent CU the right way, bring in good kids - not eye-gougers, appease the powers, play the politics, etc. if winning was not important.

i think Bohn separating the "culture building" from W-L's could be a shrewd move to be able to make the "there is a bottom line, and that's wins and losses" case when he axes Hawk. he's paving the way to make the analytical distinction between the two.

at least i hope so.

You don't need to be a good football coach to recruit kids with great high school GPAs and then make sure they go to class once they get to CU.

You don't need to be a good football coach to avoid NCAA violations.

You don't need to be a good football coach to be strict when it comes to enforcing a personal conduct policy.

You don't need to be a football coach to develop good relationships with the CU faculty and the Boulder community.

Seriously, since Bohn could get the things Hawkins has accomplished from hundreds (thousands?) of potential replacements, it's obviously not the reason he was hired. In fact, it's not even close to being the reason. Granted, we wanted someone who would win while also running a clean program (which narrows the list somewhat), but make no mistake... HAWKINS WAS HIRED TO WIN.

Beat me to the punch. :smile2:

Mike Bohn himself could have done the same job that Hawkins has done. Let's not forget that he was a D-1 quarterback. He understands the game, and is one hell of a lot better with the press and the community.

Sacky, do you know Bohn personally? I don't quite understand your unyielding support. I'm not ready to burn him at the stake, but he has some accountability here. CU's AD basically consists of the football team. Hawk was a bad hire. Not only did Bohn hire Hawk, but he extended him. On some level, the evaluation of Bohn's performance as the athletic director must strongly correlate with the W-L record of the football team.

Bohn is just as responsible for Hawk, as Hawk is for his assistants.

as an educator mahself, i'd like to point out that while 2.6 as a team GPA may be the highest team GPA ever.....but, that doesn't make it a *good GPA*.

Hawk acts like all his guys are making A's and helping grammaw across the street. they ain't.

if you can't make C's in today's college, really? grade inflation is through the roof.

I don't know him personally. But I recognize what he's done for the school and how much better off the AD is with him running things than we were under Tharp. But that wasn't the reason for my post. We were talking about how just about anybody could do the job Hawkins has done, i.e. cleaning up the image, being good with the press, yadda yadda yadda. I merely pointed out that Bohn himself could have done all those things and been the coach himself, owing to the fact that he does understand the game.

I agree.

I don't like it (I think 'Hawkins should have already been fired), but I agree this is how it will likely play out.

This whole situation is uncannily similar to the position UW was in two years ago, just before their 0-fer season. Too much politics for CU to do the right thing right now.

My post was in response to several of your posts. I am happy with much of the progress that Mike has made outside of wins. In fact you can take Mike's quote about Dan, amend it by replacing "Dan" with ""Mike" and that would pretty much sum up my feelings about Mike.

I understand that Dan and Mike should not be evaluated by the exact same standards as their positions entail different obligations, but the bottom line for both is 15-30.

Actually, the bottom line for Bohn is even worse. Not only is it 15-30, but it's two basketball teams that have placed 12th out of 12 teams in the conference the last two years in a row. However, the department is head and shoulders beyond where it was before, financially speaking. I've said this many times before and I believe it to be true - Bohn's job is 90% PR, marketing and fundraising and 10% coach hiring. He has consultants go find him his coaches that he trusts to get him the right people. That hasn't worked out, and that's a problem for him. It would be different if the football team sucked, but the basketball teams were killing it. But all of his hires have been dismal failures. I agree that ultimately, he will be judged by those hires, as unfair as that may be.

Yes being last or near-last in the 3 major sports (I don't care for womens BB, but some do I suppose) is pretty damn embarrassing to begin with, let alone multiple years in a row.

It was funny watching Mike Leach on ESPN a couple of hours ago. He and Hawk probably couldn't be more opposite in regards to coaching styles; he specifically spoke of how much he hates to shower players with positive reinforcement because it makes them content with what they've already accomplished.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would Bohn keep Hawk around knowing he may can him early next season? That would create a coaching nightmare for Bohn to clean up. I think the vast majority of people in Colorado that even remotely follow CU football know that Hawk needs to be fired. So I think politics aren't as big of an issue as Sacky seems to think. Barring a miraculous turnaround, meaning winning 3 out of next 4 or better, Hawk is spreading his wings and flying away.
