What if the demote Hawkins, but keep him as an employee?

Continue to pay him through his contract so they don't have to come up with the funds all at once, but demote him to towel boy or special assistant to the director of athletics or some other completely bogus position. Meanwhile, go hire another coach.

Possible?

we can put him in charge of finding Mac's sign that he took down from Dal Ward

If you were being interviewed to be the next HC, how would you feel if they told you that Hawkins was still going to be around? Even if he was just some type of special assistant.

It does not make any sense to pay Hawkins $1mil a year to do nothing, yet still be around campus. We would be much better off just kicking him to the curb.

Sack, I've seen this done at dozens of schools. The new HC and the former coach probably snicker about this, actually - there's a fraternity that's more important to them and their careers than any single employer.

Often, those coaches appear on sports-talk shows, TV game-day shows, etc, until they get new HC jobs.

I don't think you guys understand what I'm proposing. He can do this job from home. He never has to actually step foot on campus. In fact, he'd be barred from doing so. It would simply be a way of stretching out the payout over three years instead of paying it in one lump sum. If he wants to go take another job, he's free to do so, at which point our obligation to him would end.

I doubt it would happen, but sending him to the UC-CS campus and giving him some BS job that occupies him full time would be pretty funny. Give him an office in the basement of a building and make him the Happy Happy Joy Joy Intramurals Coordinator. Won't happen and CU should be above that kind of behavior, but it is a funny thought.

Make his dumbass work for Plati as the special assistant in charge of internet communities. Make him troll our sites and be aware of what the fans are thinking and feeling.

I didn't know there was a position for spittoon holder on the staff

I dont think it's legal, am i wrong? His contract I would assume states that he's paid to be the Head Coach at the University of Colorado. Maybe a lawyer could help, but, I'd think if they just said "actually, we need you to go do something else" he could say "fine, buy me out bitches".

That would be correct. His contractual obligation is at HC and no demotion would be contractually legal. Plus you'd look like fools for paying a towel boy millions of dollars. :wow:

last thing this university needs is a long drawn out and public lawsuit with the ex coach of the football program.

Aw, c'mon. Let Hawk stay on campus. We need someone to clean the **** out of Ralphie's stable. :smile2:

Honestly, what would be the difference between this and firing him? The AD wouldn't be saving any money.

It's a cash flow issue. Pay him over a three year period as opposed to paying him all at once.

I guess I'm not sure what actually happens typically when a coach is relieved of his duties, yet has several years left on his contract. Do they pay him off in one lump sum, or just continue to pay him monthly or whatever through the remainder of the contract?

People on this board have said things like "we're still paying Barnett."
