The mistakes the staff made with DS

When he arrived a little later than expected because he was knocking out that Algebra class he was reported to be overweight and out of shape which led to mistake #1. From that point, as soon as the coaches knew he wasn't in perfect shape, they should have redshirted him and that should have been the end of that story for the 08 season.

Instead though, that led to mistake #2. Our jackass coaches compounded the first screwup by putting him out there unprepared and he ended up getting hurt.

After that, they made mistake #3 which there was really no turning back from. They then started the trend of putting him out there half injured and gave him just a couple carries a game at most.

In the end, I can't blame the guy for wanting a new start closer to home.

There is no way you were going to Redshirt the top RB in the nation coming out of HS. You think there is hell to pay now.

No way Darell Scott would have agreed to a Red Shirt last year because he came in over weight. That just wasn't going to happen.

You are aware that top running backs are sometimes redshirted..

willis mcgahee and king from uga were redshirted their freshman season..

McGahee was the 2nd best back in the Marcus Houston class.

Sounds good but there would have been an uproar if they redshirted him.

Well then our coaches are weaker than I thought. It isn't up to the player, it is up to the coach and if we only got him here because they promised to let him play as a freshman then they need to change their recruiting pitch to something like "if everything works out and you are ready, then you can play as a freshman".

Yes I am fully aware of this, and NO DS would not have agreed to come to CU to be redshirted his first year because he showed up 15 pounds overweight, when all expectations were for him to start from day one.

In this case hindsight is blinding you guys.

The point is, the coaches talked about how out of shape he was and how he showed up late because of that class. When that happens you gotta redshirt that guy, not make excuses for why he isn't playing up to expectations.

I understand the point. I think you are missing mine. You do not redshirt your top recruit for being out of shape, when you have minimal RB depth and you promised him a shot to start.

It's easy to say what should have been done when you have the benefit of knowing future results. But no staff in the country was going to put a RS on DS last year for being 15 pounds overweight.

you don't redshirt the #1 HS running back in the nation, 5 star Mr. All-Everything. putting the kid on the field in a position to succeed is how you make the program/recruiting better....instead of trying to prove a point about lunch pails and blue collar nonsense.

now, while we all expected immediate impact from DS.....it was clear from day one he wasn't a killer, workout freak like Adrian Peterson.

i don't blame the kid, why stick it out with this staff? the whole J-Fly/Neuheusel thing is smarmy and distasteful, however.

I know what you are saying but I think plenty of schools would redshirt someone who isn't ready. What if DS would have gone to UT? Was he assured PT there as a frosh? When it happened and all the media reports came out about him being out of shape, my first thought was, "too bad, they don't redshirt him". Besides when was the last time a true freshman really had a big impact on a team. It happens but not that often and rarely when the guy comes in late and is not ready to play.

As I recall UT was also thin at RB which is why they were recruiting him hard. I don't care what program you are, unless you have an AP type player already starting for you the the #1 RB recruit in the nation is not going to RS.

I am not trying to take away from you point, that maybe it would have been better if they had. But I really don't see any scenario in which that was ever going to happen, so pointing at the staff for not going down that path doesn't seem reasonable.

That is why you have 4 weeks of fall camp with 2 a day practices....to get kids in shape. I am tired of that lame excuse.

If he did not show up until the first game week maybe...but other than that, I call BS:wow:

Certainly not a defense of Hawkins....BUT...

you guys are really making a big deal out of something that you shouldn't. Just because he was perceived as the top back doesn't mean he can come in out of shape and automatically start. That is a horrible message to the other guys.

It would appear Stewart flat beat this guy out and he doesn't like it. Fine, if he doesn't want to compete, go home.

At some point, everyone has to play hurt. Nature of the game.
I think you are better off without him. Maybe he just wasn't happy in Boulder, who knows?

Hawkins does have a disturbing trend of unproductive highly rated guys for some reason.

:stupid:

That was actually fairly well put, Mr. Beak.

i throw the bs flag he came in out of shape this lameass staff prolly thought that cause when he walked into boulder his first day he was outta breath cause the thin air...and for all of you that think r.stewart is our best back.... lmfao

I don't think it was a shortness of breath issue. I'm pretty sure it had to do with being over weight. I'm not defending the staff on the way the handled Scott's time at CU, but was out of shape when he first arrived.

It's ****ing hilarious to be reading a thread based on the premise that Hawkins has ****ed up by playing the more talented guy based on his potential... when what Dan should have done is redshirt him to send the message that you don't play at CU unless you work hard off the field.

:rofl2:

It may be useful to recall that Scott missed that first summer because he needed summer-school algebra to qualify for college, so he came in 15 pounds over his playing weight, didn't have nearly as much summer-time training as others, and was accordingly relegated behind others who practiced more.

I expect this flag will be run up the pole often so Hawkins & Co can make great use of the "maturity" issue.

No idea why those recruiting coaches didn't think of this and push him onto any other program. But they beat their chests and toasted many a glass after Scott picked up that CU cap. "Enjoy all aspects of every decision."

I think this issue goes all the way to the core of our problems. The only way that we're getting talented players to come here is with the promise of immediate playing time...therefore, when a major recruit arrives, they expect to play. This, in my opinion, shows just how inept this entire coaching staff has been at building depth (how is it in year 4 that we're still playing mainly frosh & sophomores?) and managing the expectations of new recruits.

I assure you, DS will not be the only player leaving CU this year

You really need to start watching the games.

I have been on the play the talented kids bus all season long.

The problem with this coaching staff is how they use them. How they used DS and all the RB this year is/was a joke. From the 3rd & inches deep handoff to Speedy, to the toss sweep to our slowest running back earlier in the season.

DS was the biggest back we had. It should not have been that hard to get him involed in more than 2 plays a game. At a minimum he should have been the short yardage guy. He also had some great plays on screen passes etc.

Bottom line is this staff has had some great talent on the team that has never been developed. The staff does not change anything in the system to fit the talent, instead insists on changing the talent to fit the system.

Definitely can't redshirt him, nobody would have approved of that. What they could have done, was get him in shape. It's really not that hard to get a guy in shape with a month to work with. Knowing the playbook is another issue altogether. His problem last year wasn't his ability, he had flashes, it was the nagging injuries. This year is completely different. I don't know what the deal was this year, he probably was upset that he was getting 1 carry a game and wasn't putting it all out there. Unfortunate for both parties, we really needed him to live up to the potential and he loses out on 3 years of NFL preparation.

OU redshirted Jermie Calhoun, who was a 5 star RB rated right behind Scott. On the other hand, we are not OU.

I think ESPN had him above Scott. Not that it matters all that much. Just throwing it out there.
Not that any of this matters. Scott came here with the expectation that he would be given the opportunity to play right away. Redshirting him was not a viable option.

With this issue I always believed that JSmith kinda put in his head how easy it would be to come and play at CU. I mean Smith wasn't the hardest worker on the field, but he got good playing time. And instead of going hard, Scott kinda just thought he could come in and just take over regardless of who was there since the talent was always an issue. He comes in out of shape and unprepared, gets injured and the rest is history.

Should the staff had redshirted him? Probably. But then it would have gotten political when CU lost any close games.

Both sides made mistakes here. Obviously it's a major F up for the staff, but Scott contributed to the issue.

Just remember the old saying...for every single hot chick, there is some guy that got tired of taking her Sh*t.

Scott = Hot Chick

Hawkins= some guy
