I, for one, hope he would consider CU. He is the type of no nonsense leader we need. I just watched his interview on OTL again, and I think his integrity, class and work ethic are just what the Buff nation needs.

I would agree but it all depends on if he can recruit. CU needs recruiters who can overcome the major disadvantages that university has (Lack of location, weather, money, race). I'm assuming he did it well at NU, but will that still hold up?

He was a very good recruiter at Nebraska. Though, this was when they were considered a powerhouse. I like him, but I think we'd be better off with someone who is a guru on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.

At this point I don't think folks can worry about the X's and O's. Gotta get someone who can bring in talent. I think North Carolina isn't the greatest on the X's and O's but dammit if they don't have some skill running around all over the place.
Getting someone who can do both will either cost lots of money (big school asst) or massive luck (small school guru with lots of connections and no buzz)
I want both. however, I prefer X's and O's considering the issues we have with coordinators leaving :huh:

Another up and comer? Hawk was not the up and comer at Boise, Peterson was/is. We hired the wrong guy. TG looks like the real deal, can recruit and X & O.

I think Gill would bring a lot of credibility back to the program. It's hunch, I know, but there is something about his demeanor and drive that reminds me of Coach Mac. And that's what the Buffs need.
Forget Turner Gill-We already tried the coach from the no-name conference with Hawkins.
Turner Gill has done nothing in Buffalo that impresses. They have three wins this year. Gardner-Webb, Akron, and UTEP.
Is anyone impressed with 2008 wining the MAC? The finished the regular season with 5 losses, and then lost the bowl game to finish 8-6. The fact that they were in the MAC championship with 5 losses tells you how bad the MAC was/is.

It's not the conference that Hawk came from that burned us, it's Hawk. Yet again, if we had hired Peterson we would not be having any of these discussions. We need to make sure the guy we hire can: 1) recruit; and 2) COACH. It is now obvious that Hawk had success at Boise b/c of his O-coordinator and other assistants. Not b/c of Hawk. Lets not make the same mistake again. Not saying TG is the only good prospect, but we aren't going to get a Saban or Carroll so we need to look at the young coaching talent wherever it may be.
At the time, Hawkins was considered one of the top up and coming coaches. I realize people's hatred for the guy is sky high right now, but you can't deny his 90% winning percentage while head coach of Boise St.
Petersen has taken the next step with Boise, but has not shown he can 1) Build a program 2) Recruit against the top programs.
Gill is 3-6 at Buffalo this year. Yea, 1 winning season at Buffalo is impressive, but he hasn't recruited against the top programs, may not have the coaching tree that a BCS coordinator would have and hasn't shown he can maintain and build off success.
To me, the jury is out on Turner Gill as a coach.

Turner Gill is an outstanding recruiter. If he can get decent players to Buffalo, NY, he can get them to Boulder.
And if you think winning the MAC isn't impressive . . . you need to look at Buffalo's record before Gill was the HC.

In 4 years they have only gotten better. They are a contender for the BCS. I'ld say he is doing fine recruiting and/or improving the program. Bottom line, I WISH he was the next CU coach but we can't cherry pick Boise St. twice.

Turner's demonstrated good things FOR Buffalo U, but he's got far less experience and fewer connections for a top BCS program than Hawkins had . He may be great - after all, he believes in adjusting his team's strategies based on the talent he's seen and can develop.
How many top recruiters will he hire to join him? How many of them are bringing in nationally-ranked RBs that will stay for more than 2 seasons?
While that's a little sarcastic, those ARE the questions that need to be answered before hiring yet another cinderella flash-in-the-pan.
He does know the Big 8 territory to some degree himself. Is he going to cover it all by himself? Are you certain his choices in asst-coaches know the territory even better?

After Gene Chizic's failure at Iowa St, it's gonna be tough to bring in a top level asst to CU especially an SEC coach unless they're just desperate to get their feet wet as a head coach. You're not going to get a coach who was used to recruiting talent that played right down the street or within the state to come to a school that doesn't have a recruiting area within 500 miles. I think coaches like Strong, Orgeron, etc would rather stay asst's in recruiting hotbeds instead of coming to CU. Now if the money is right....and I mean it has to be an offer they can't refuse...they may listen. Does CU have that type of dough though?
The more I think about it Gill may be the best at this time. It'd be good PR, it may be a reassuring presence to potential black players (considering the lack of presence on campus), and maybe he still has connections in the recruiting world from his Nebraska heydays. I wouldn't take the Buffalo record as a red flag though....
That being said...what about Todd Dodge from North Texas? Just got off the phone with the Pope. He is pretty sure Ohio and Kent state are in the bag. Miami is a push though. He's gonna wait to see the spread.
There are not that many BCS schools. If you are an assistant at a top level school and have any dreams of becoming a HC I would think CU would be a great fit. Especially for the SEC coaches. Do you see any top level coach at Alabama ever getting a job offer at Auburn? I don't think Florida will ever look to Georgia to fill any coaching openings?

If "Southern California the base of CU's recruiting", then why are we looking eastward and not specifically at some SoCal strongman?
coordinators can help with that. THey mine the area, the Head coach only goes in after the relationship is established. Hawk doesn't go to cali to recruit for instance

Maybe he wont be able to compete with UT, OU, and the SEC. His teams can't compete against Middle Tennessee, Troy, and Arkansas St.
