or at least my choice for future coach. Navy, led by Coach Ken Niumatalolo, are playing ND today on NBC, gametime 12:30 MST

I'm starting to warm up to Niumatalolo.

Things that surprise me about Navy:

They're physical. They're lighter than other teams, but their guys are STRONG, and they get low and move people.

The defense. Sound fundamentals, and they run to the ball. Their safeties aren't getting caught 20 yds out of position.

Even though I'm in the Navy, and root for the Middies every week...
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!

I go back to a previous thread where someone talked about how Coach K has no recruiting connections other than those from Hawaii. NO WAY do we want ANYONE from the Hawaii staff (or with University of Hawaii connections) coaching our team. Seriously, do you want to see Greg McMackin as our DC (yeah, he'll be fired at the end of the year.) No freakin' way! The only reason he got as much hype as he did was because June Jones offense w/Brennan was putting up 50 a game, and the 35 UH gave up every game was overlooked (remember 2001 with VO?) My credentials on this? I had UH season tix the year they went undefeated and got waxed by UGa in the Sugar Bowl. Good deal by the way, they serve Gordon Biersch beer and margaritas in the stadium.

If we want the triple option to Boulder (which I admit I'd like to see again) then we need to cough up the major dough and get Johnson and his entire staff to come to Boulder.

As far as the heart the Middies, that's a trait inherent at all the academies (look at AF) because of the type of kid that goes to a service academy. These kids come to the academies because they want to serve a higher purpose than playing D1 football and getting to the NFL. And that desire translates to the field. Very rarely will you see that type of desire at ANY BCS school.

If we want the triple option, then go get Paul Johnson. He is now a proven commodity that his offense can translate to BCS competition. Coach K is an unproven commmodity and we've already lived that nightmare. We don't (hell, we CAN'T) need to do it again.

Going Sinker....

I don't understand why you just assume as fact that Numu would hire this McCracken chap and some other dip**** coaches with whom you are familiar just because he coached with them prior. He obviously knows what it takes to be successful, I imagine he has some ability to evaluate coaches.

As for recruiting, it is true he is unproven but that doesn't mean he won't be able to do it. His plans on successful recruiting and assistant coaches would all be part of the vetting process during an interview anyway, if he had poor answers I'm sure he wouldn't be awarded the job.

You have to be a little realistic; Paul Johnson is not coming to CU with his entire coaching staff. We are not going to be hiring away any current successful BCS coach. This hire will likely be an assistant at a BCS school or a non-BCS HC, and there is going to be an element of risk..

I think I'm in the minority here, but I don't really care to try the triple option experiment in the Big 12. I'd much rather get a coach that runs the spread option, which would be a great offense for Hansen imo. Not sure he has the body type to take the beating a triple option would require.

As for the Navy coach, he coaches with a lot of passion and certainly coaches his players up. Can he recruit and hire good assistants? No idea.

I'm not necessarily married to the triple option, but I don't want to see the spread. I'm tired of seeing that same damn thing at every school in the league, and I think a run-based attack would have advantages in this conference given everyone is so pass happy.

Exhibit A; KSU. These guys are going to win the North, with that old fossil running the same Osborne-esque stuff he ran 8yrs ago. Hung 30 on OU in Norman, which no one else has come close to doing this season.

A run-based offense with an architect who can execute it is what we need.

Paul Johnson was Niumatalolo's mentor for quite a few years. Paul Johnson was also the other name on the short list with Hawkins for the Colorado job. Bohn rolled the dice and came up with tails instead of heads.

As far as Niumatalolo goes for the CU job, I don't know. I don't know what kind of staff he could assemble. He has a pretty good background and is at least into the game with emotion on the sidelines. That's unlike the meditator who puts everyone into a trance before every game.

Well the spread option is run based. I don't mean a Texas Tech spread, more of a Oregon spread. Mostly misdirection handoffs coupled with some speed options to go with quick passes to WRs. The occasional over the top big pass. I think Danny Spond would also be great in this kind of offense, although I think he'd be pretty good in the triple option too. I know what you mean, I don't think many of us want to see the Texas Tech Buffs running around, we've always been a running team and should remain a running team.

I must admit though, watching Navy and Georgia Tech week in and week out certainly makes me wonder.
